25.01.2022 Have you checked out bulk food stores yet? Everything is plastic free! Nuts, seeds, rice, flour, tea, even chocolate. You can bring your own jars, bags and containers to fill or use the compostable brown paper bags provided. You can buy as much or as little as you need. This reduces both packaging AND food wastage. One way to reduce single-use soft plastics is to buy package-free staples such as flour, spices, oats and pasta from bulk food stores. They even have package-free chocolate and snacks! At bulk food stores you can buy as much or as little as you need - reducing food waste AND packaging waste. BYO reusable glass jars or bags or use the paper bags provided. This funding will help us tackle the soft plastic waste problem through education and circular solutions. 09.01.2022 Plastic Police is an innovative recycling and engagement program tackling the environmental issue of soft plastic waste. Based in the Hunter Central Coast, Plastic Police collaborates with businesses, councils and infrastructure projects to capture and divert soft plastics from landfill. Soft plastics are recycled into a range of products, including asphalt and furniture, which are purchased by participants to ‘close the loop’ on what is collected. Plastic Police’s focus goes beyond simply recycling; it’s a circular economy solution that is educating, engaging and inspiring organisations and communities to rethink, better manage and ultimately reduce soft plastic waste and buy recycled.

05.01.2022 Exciting news! Port of Newcastle has announced Plastic Police as a recipient for its 2020 Community Sponsorship Program. The funding will enable us to develop waste education videos to significantly increase the reach of Plastic Police’s education program. The videos will educate about the problems with plastic in the environment and the solutions, with the goal of engaging communities and organisations to rethink, recycle and ultimately reduce the use of soft plastics. 04.01.2022 Exciting news! Downer's road surfacing product, Reconophalt, which incorporates recycled soft plastics, has been approved for use by the NSW EPA! Reconophalt provides considerable sustainability benefits and increased performance compared to traditional asphalt, and has proven to bring no increased environmental risk. We look forward to seeing more local roads made from Reconophalt, containing recycled soft plastics, toner, glass bottles and reclaimed roads.

03.01.2022 Way to go Central Coast Council! More recycled roads have been poured in the region - this one containing over 90% recycled materials. We are proud to collaborate with such an innovative council to collect soft plastics for recycling into asphalt additive for local roads, progressing the local circular economy.

02.01.2022 Government ministers met this week and have confirmed that eight types of single-use plastics will be phased out in Australia from 2025 under a plan to reduce plastic waste. This includes plastic bags, degradable plastic, plastic utensils and stirrers, plastic straws, polystyrene food containers, polystyrene consumer goods packaging, and microbeads in personal care products.
