25.01.2022 When I ask young school kids why they think that humanity is continuing to produce and consume hundreds of millions of tonnes of plastic knowing that it is contaminating our food, water, our bodies and our fellow creatures, the top 5 answers are as follows; * People don't care * The government doesn't care * People are lazy * It's cheap and convenient... * Companies make lots of money from it The next question is, Why do you think this is so and continue to ask "why" (ie; why don't people care) when we've found an answer. It becomes a very interesting exploration of human psyche and our collective culture. Try it. See more

24.01.2022 Loving the new signage on the garbage trucks in Shoalhaven City Council. There are so many ways we can educate the masses if we just get a bit creative. Well done Fiona Schreurs and team!

24.01.2022 Marine debris will have cost countries in the Asia-Pacific region AU$313 billion by 2050. This DOES NOT take into account the cost of cleaning it up or the cost of injury to wildlife or contamination of our ocean. While the plastics industry, petro-chemical industry and food packaging industry make billions in profit from their product - communities, as usual, are left with the bill...and the mess. So maybe we could place a significant tax on all single-use plastic and use 100% of that money to pay for cleaning up our catchments, coastlines and other preventative measures. We would probably see a sharp decline in disposable plastic consumption too.

23.01.2022 Go the Kiwis! The Ministry for the Environment waste director praised all New Zealanders for their quick adaption to the ban. It could be so simple if other countries governments (like ours) had the guts to do this.

23.01.2022 Steel pegs are a great replacement for those flimsy plastic pegs and while they cost more, should last decades so will save you in the long run. Living Tiny I was stoked to discover this special hanger for socks and undies that can be hung indoors or outside.

23.01.2022 Great news! South Australia leading the country, yet again, on environmental issues.

22.01.2022 Wondering whether that bio-degradeable bag or compostable cup are making a difference and what kind of difference they are making? There's definitely a lot of green-washing going on but also some initiatives that are genuinely about reducing plastic pollution. This article is very well researched and easy to comprehend - definitely worth a read! Remember - prioritising RE-USABLE over disposable will always make the biggest difference! Huge thanks to Caitlin Simm and the amazing crew from Seaside Scavenge for their research https://www.seasidescavenge.org//are-bioplastics-environme

22.01.2022 Plastic Pollution Solutions is stoked to be hosting another Plastic Free July trivia session - this time for the Second Nature crew at Waverley Council! Loads of facts and trivia questions about the ocean, the plastic issue and our role in the solution. Free to participate - all welcome!

22.01.2022 More great news about kids leading the way! Meet Rosie from Ulladulla, NSW who is a true plastic pollution warrior. During her regular clean-up missions near the local golf course, she was noticing a lot of broken plastic golf tees lying around, close to waterways and a nearby beach. So she came up with a genuinely bio-degradable golf tee solution and won a major award. We love your work Rosie - you're an inspiration!

20.01.2022 Some info to pass on to those people who think that plastic pollution is only a problem in "those poor countries". Over 4000 pieces of micro plastic per square metre on the two Sydney beaches studied and over 9000 pieces at an Adelaide hotspot. Not surprising that micro plastic has now been found in human tissue and organs. Some solutions: Avoid single-use plastic and all disposable items, pick up plastic in your path wherever you are and educate/inspire/empower your family and friends to do the same. (thank you for your important work AUSMAP)

19.01.2022 NEW WEBSITE - OFFICIAL LAUNCH!!! About ten years ago, when almost no one was talking about plastic pollution, including me, I was on one of many kayaking adventures in the majestic fjords of Norway, when I found a new, empty plastic water bottle floating in, what I thought was, pristine wilderness. That moment precipitated an incredible flow of serendipity. It began with holding community events in Norway, then meeting Dr Marcus Eriksen from 5 Gyres Institute, who convinced m...e that education was key - then roaming Australia in a camper van on a mission to bring awareness to the masses. With support from countless people and orgs, we now have a new, bold mission statement, an educational program that I'm incredibly proud of, a new logo and a brand new website. Thanks Josh Holliday and Michaela Parry for your dedication, patience, advice and beautiful work. https://www.plasticpollutionsolutions.com.au/education/ See more

19.01.2022 Plastic Free July tip of the week: Avoid packaged fruit & veg! Get yourself a bunch of re-usable produce bags which you can either make from recycled cloth or buy them from Onya, Biome Eco Stores or even at supermarkets! CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION: being mindful of your choices and the consequences they may have for our environment and our over-stressed waste streams.

18.01.2022 Turning beach plastic into surfboards - a novel idea! There are so many caring and concerned people out there looking for and finding solutions on many different levels. The movement is growing daily but please keep in mind people, our no.1 priority needs to be AVOIDING DISPOSABLE PLASTIC. We need to turn off the plastic tap and find more, safe ways to re-purpose and recycle all the plastic in existence.

17.01.2022 Well done Seventh Generation! Yet another business going to great lengths to make substantial changes to their systems and products so that they can ELIMINATE SINGLE-USE PLASTIC altogether - not easy to do with cleaning products. What we really liked about steel is the way that it can be part of a circular economy... The steel that were using already has about 25% recycled metal in it."

17.01.2022 Capt Plastic is now Zooming into schools everywhere to keep getting this important message out there (and to improve his online tech skills). Right now we are offering free sessions to any school anywhere. Its a 60-70 min live presentation, a Q & A and a fun Kahoot quiz to wrap it up. Contact us via direct message here or via our website (https://www.plasticpollutionsolutions.com.au/)

17.01.2022 Plastic Free July tip of the week: Soaps and cleaning products can be bought in bulk and/or packaging free which, over time, will reduce A LOT of single-use plastic. We refill this bucket of organic, chemical-free, laundry detergent at our local bulk food shop. We only buy packaging free soap, shampoo and conditioner in bars with very few ingredients, no nasties and usually from local makers. Takes up less room than bottles too. Found these handy holders online from Blockdock - they work a treat!

17.01.2022 These year 6 students were definitely not impressed when they learned about the 2019 study which found plastic particles in every poo sample studied. Unfortunately, the news is getting worse with a more recent study finding micro plastics and their chemicals in human tissue including polyethylene, polycarbonate and, interestingly, Bisphenol A (BPA) - a chemical which is known to disrupt our hormones. Yet another mess my generation is leaving for our children to deal with. (see link to this study in the comments below)

16.01.2022 Growing evidence that showing respect for our environment and reducing your footprint is good for business. At Potato Head resort, Bali, menus are made of old tires and flip flops, while bottle caps are turned into tissue dispensers. Several beach resorts said their sustainable initiatives have improved their cost savings, while also helping to educate both communities and customers about their carbon footprint.

16.01.2022 What a fantastic solution to instant noodle packaging! Food packaging is one of the largest polluters of our oceans - especially from "quick & easy" meals like noodles. To replace the many plastic sachets that accompany packs of instant noodles, product design student Holly Grounds has created an edible, spice-infused wrapper that breaks down when cooked to season the broth - it actually disappears before the eyes of the user!

16.01.2022 Not in 5 years or 10 years - IN ONE YEAR! This is what CAN happen when politicians decide to act in the best interests of people and planet. Environment Minister Svenja Schulze said the move was part of an effort to move away from throw-away culture. Up to 20% of garbage collected in parks and other public places consists of single-use plastic, mainly polystyrene containers.

16.01.2022 We're absolutely loving the potential of Tomtex! Using potential waste materials to create a 100% biodegradable leather alternative which is durable while remaining soft enough to be hand-stitched or machine-sewn. Not only is it a beautiful and versatile alternative to plastics and leather, it's reducing industrial pollution and diverting waste from landfill. Let's hope it gains support from all sectors (including us individuals!).

16.01.2022 It's official! Re-usable coffee cups are safe and legal to use during Covid19. Just make sure it's clean and that the cafe use the "contactless" coffee pour. Both Victorian Government advice (which is consistent with the advice all jurisdictions are giving) and the Australian Restaurant and Catering Association (Best Practice Cafe Guidelines COVID-19) support the continued use of a food outlet's standard, reusable foodware, not single use plastics, as the better option.

12.01.2022 A recycling system based on the premise of a true circular economy with a government-funded, publicly regulated Extended Producer Responsibility at its core can be a cornerstone of the solution to plastic pollution. Regulated product stewardship helps put the responsibility for waste and what happens to products at the end of their useful life on manufacturers, importers, retailers and users, rather than on communities, councils, neighbourhoods and nature,

12.01.2022 Well done Manrags! They divert tonnes of clothing from landfill, distribute them to op-shops or have them re-purposed - like jeans which can be made into tote bags and aprons can be recycled to create new yarn or shredded to create insulation or stuffing for pet beds. A big part of the solution to plastic pollution is the intelligent management of our so-called "waste".

12.01.2022 Coca Cola and their mates have fought against container deposit schemes (Cash for Containers) all around Australia for many years and now they want to control Victoria's scheme? Sounds like it'd be putting the fox in charge of the chicken coop.

09.01.2022 It's been a fun and mad few weeks of online "Zoom + Kahoot" edu-tainment sessions in schools from Wodonga Victoria, NSW south coast and up to Bundaberg Queensland and will continue in 3rd and 4th term. We're now also holding similar online community trivia sessions for local councils/community groups. Flick me an email if you'd like to line one up - anywhere in the world!!! [email protected]

09.01.2022 Join in our fun Plastic Free July Trivia Night tomorrow at 7pm hosted by Waverley Council and Plastic Pollution Solutions. Three rounds of "Ocean & Plastic" trivia preceded by a short story-style presentation about our journey into the issue of plastic pollution. See you there!

08.01.2022 Some heartwarming news during these mad Covid times from Hornsby in Sydney where the local Boomerang Bags (Boomerang Bags Communities) group are sewing re-usable shopping bags to present to new citizens. Not only that, these new Australians are also presented with a gift box usually containing a commemorative coin and native plants.

08.01.2022 Great to see even more countries taking quick and decisive action on single-use plastics. Well done Greece!

07.01.2022 It's Plastic Free July and we'd like to congratulate this wonderful organisation for 10 years of world-changing, positive engagement! Challenge your mates or family to avoid single-use plastic for the month of July and watch how it sticks FOREVER! Here is our PFJ tip of the week: If you're a tea-lover, buy LOOSE LEAF to avoid the plastic-impregnated tea-bags and extra packaging that goes with them. Even better, if you have a local bulk food store, take your own jar and fill it up with your favourite brew.

06.01.2022 As you go about your day, know that two out of every three breaths of oxygen was produced in the ocean. Worth protecting? HAPPY WORLD OCEANS DAY

05.01.2022 Plastic Pollution Solutions is part of a collaborative entity with Boomerang Bags & Seaside Scavenge called Travelling Trash Troupe. We are absolutely thrilled to have been granted funding from The City of Gold Coast, Catchment & Citizen Science Program for the 3rd year in succession! Our project will deliver a three-pronged approach to litter reduction and single-use plastic awareness on the Gold Coast this Spring. Our aim is to inspire, enable and empower community action through education, collaboration and ongoing initiatives bringing about lasting, positive change to the coastline, waterways and marine environment of the local region.

04.01.2022 Quitting single-use plastic: "The most difficult thing was building a routine in the early days and sticking to it! Once it becomes a habit though, its just second nature, and you know the things to look out for and the brands to buy. That means reducing plastic use is not overly time-consuming once you know what products are available and where to buy them, you just build this into your routine. That way the decision for next time is already made."

03.01.2022 This town has been trying to achieve zero-waste for 17 years and has made amazing progress but plastic is the biggest obstacle to accomplishing their goal.Even products made mostly from easily recyclable materials like paper, aluminum or cardboard cant be sorted and recycled if they contain plastic components that cant be separated. The truth is, some materials simply arent recyclable and as Kamikatsus residents have painstakingly proven, no matter how many categories consumers sort their waste into or how diligently they scrub down their plastic food containers, most plastics cannot be recycled.

03.01.2022 Yes, plastic can leach toxic chemicals into your food even when it's in the freezer! Here are some great tips to avoid storing frozen food in plastic and keep in mind - fruit comes in it's own natural packaging

01.01.2022 Please support this petition from our friends at Ten Little Pieces: Woolworths have announced their newest release: Disney ooshies. These tiny plastic models will be given out for free to hundreds of thousands of customers, and most will eventually end up in landfill. Many, will find their way to rivers, lakes and oceans, where they will threaten the health and safety of wildlife. We implore Woolworths and Disney to boycott this new range, and instead invest in sustainable, renewable and ethical products and packaging.

01.01.2022 Fresh, organic fruit & veggies - zero packaging! This would dovetail nicely with the burgeoning regenerative farming movement. Kecipir is a social enterprise that strives to realize agricultural production, distribution, and consumption in a more equitable and environmentally friendly manner. Well done Kecipir! Lets get this rolled out in every community! https://www.facebook.com/kecipir.organic

01.01.2022 The youth are leading us out of this plastic crisis and are often guided or mentored by a passionate parent or adult. Yesterday, Molly and Jules Steer, from Straw No More, gave evidence at the Queensland Government Public Hearing Program regarding the proposed Waste Reduction and Recycling (Plastic Items) Amendment Bill 2020. #StrawNoMore is very grateful to the Queensland Minister for the Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Leeanne Enoch MP for proposing this Bill to Parliament, and for the continued efforts to protect our oceans from single-use plastic pollution.
