25.01.2022 The difference between social and physical distancing Physical distancing means keeping a 1.5 metre distance from other people when out shopping, exercising or just enjoying some time outside. This will help ensure community transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19) is minimised.... During times of isolation due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, it’s still important to stay socially connected, this can be virtually. Make a plan in advance As restrictions change around Australia and we return to a new normal, this normal will look different for everyone from a social, physical and mental health perspective. For the disability community, this return will take even more planning and in some cases, it will be a slower return into this new way of life. For people with a disability returning to work, employers could provide information about the workplace environment and any new practices they have implemented in the weeks before to coming back. This will enable planning and preparation for what the new environment will be like and help to reduce anxiety.

16.01.2022 The NDIS in the community Why is community participation important? The Productivity Commission report said addressing the relatively lower levels of community participation and inclusion for people with disability will have important benefits.... The Productivity Commission reported: It can lead to improved wellbeing outcomes for people with disability and their carers (in relation to health, employment, education, income and life satisfaction outcomes). It can lessen longer-term care and support costs for people with disability and it may prevent people who have modest disability care and support needs from needing more costly levels of care and support. For example: The provision of accessible public or community transport for people with disability can reduce the need for them to use taxis and the associated costs of taxi vouchers. The design of shopping centres, accessible to public or community transport, enables people with disability who can use public transport to be independent and shop for themselves. They don't have to rely on others to shop on their behalf. The provision of orientation and mobility services for people with moderate levels of vision impairment can reduce the likelihood of them falling or having accidents, leading to further disability or impairment. Support for people with disability and carers is also likely to have economic benefits, increasing participation in the workforce. The community as a whole benefits from inclusive arrangements, not just people with disability. In the broadest sense, inclusion can enhance Australia's social capital, engaging more people in their community and better reflecting community diversity. It creates better networks among people and breaks down stereotypes. It can promote economic and social participation. This page is current as at 18 December 2018.
13.01.2022 News 31 August 2020 Participants, their families and carers may receive a phone call or SMS to participate in a survey from 1 September to 27 November 2020. The NDIA will use survey results to help identify the types of supports that lead to good outcomes for participants and to improve the NDIS.... Australian Healthcare Associates (AHA) will conduct this survey on behalf of the NDIA. The survey will take about 30 minutes to complete. Parents may be asked to complete the survey on behalf of their child. AHA may also ask to talk to a family member, if possible, and may ask them to complete a separate survey, as the NDIA also surveys and reports on outcomes for family and carers. The NDIA is committed to listening to participants, their families and carers to constantly improve the NDIS. AHA will be calling from one of these numbers: 1300 355 142 or 0488 855 790 If you have any concern about the identity of the caller or their purpose, ask for their name, number and type of survey. You can verify this information by contacting the NDIA directly on 1800 800 110. Information about the Long Form Outcomes Framework Survey is available on the Have your say page. 03.01.2022 Media release from the Minister 1 September 2020 The Australian Government is investing $64.9 million in grants to 138 organisations in the disability sector to build the capacity of Australians with disability to participate in and contribute to the community. Organisations will be offered up to $500,000 per year for two years under the Individual Capacity Building (ICB) grants round, part of the National Disability Insurance Scheme Information, Linkages and Capacity Buildi...ng (ILC) program to deliver projects in the community to benefit all Australians with disability, their carers and families. Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme Stuart Robert said the grants give people with disability increased access to the knowledge, skills and confidence required to empower them to be active members of their communities. ‘The grant round is focused on individual capacity building for people with disability, it’s another important step forward in ensuring they have access to peer support, mentoring and other services that build their skills, knowledge and confidence to be involved with and benefit from the same community activities as all Australians’ Minister Robert said. ‘The 138 successful grants to organisations right across Australia will aid the important work these organisations carry out to deliver life-changing projects for people with disability, their families and carers,’ Minister Robert said. Successful projects funded under this grant round include leadership courses to further empower people with disability, workshops to build confidence to speak up in the community, and online hubs for helping people with disability sign up to social activities and groups. More information on the ILC grants is available on the Community Grants Hub .
