22.01.2022 The global economy has only just commenced its recovery from the depths of the largest economic setback in modern history, yet stock markets have bounced strongly from their mid-March lows. This extraordinary recovery stands in stark contrast to other periods of economic weakness. The markets response can most likely be attributed to the enormous monetary and fiscal measures taken by governments and central banks around the world. This leads to the obvious question, what happens next? Our CEO and CIO, Andrew Clifford provides his insights. https://www.platinum.com.au//T/Market-Update-13-July-2020

19.01.2022 The world’s No.1 electric vehicle battery maker, LG Chem may look like an overnight success story, but the long runway of electric vehicle rollout over the next decade or two suggests the story may not be over yet. 19.01.2022 We are avoiding companies in the direct line of fire and seeking those with a strong domestic orientation, commented Dr Joseph Lai, portfolio manager for the Platinum Asia Fund, on the recent geopolitical tussle between the US and China. The tension between the two economic superpowers is well known and possibly already factored into share prices. We believe that despite heightening tensions, the likelihood of a significant disruption to the China/Asia growth story is limi...ted. We have positioned the portfolio to avoid companies in the region that may be directly impacted by the dispute and added to likely winners in the long run. Although China is still seen as the factory of the world, exports only represent 20% of Chinas GDP (economic output). While trade tensions have seen Chinas exports to the US fall, only 16% of exports went to the US in 2019; this equates to just 3% of Chinas GDP. The bulk of Chinas economy is in fact domestic driven. Our Chinese exposures are predominantly domestic companies with strong balance sheets, that we believe should grow even in times of rising tensions.
