25.01.2022 WARNING - UPSETTING STORY & PHOTOS BELOW This is why we always teach kids and the community the importance of SPOT IT. SNIP IT. BIN IT. Any elastic or plastic ring is potentially deadly to our beautiful wildlife. This post about one of our local platypus girls is absolutely heartbreaking. Please make sure you put all rubbish in the bin, and remember to cut up any elastic or plastic rings.
25.01.2022 Harper was one of our original Ambassadors and he stayed with us for two years. We were heartbroken when he died. But we have loved watching his mum, Jacinda, continue her beautiful son’s legacy, and it has been an honour to be involved with Harper’s Army. This post from Be the Change Community showcases Jacinda, her passion for the planet and her deep love for wonderful Harper

23.01.2022 Two years since the Opera House Net ban was announced, and we’ve already seen huge positive changes. In summer 2019/2020 there were no reports of platypus caught in illegal nets. None. Zip. Nadda!! This is awesome and shows why this law change was always needed and how important strong legislation is for our native wildlife
23.01.2022 Who wants a fun, nature activity? Check out Amy and her awesome Vic Rocks While we can’t be out collecting or dropping off rocks yet, we can still collect rocks, pebbles and stones and spend time painting them Amy will put some examples in the comments, where we hope to see some of your paintings too Make sure you join the Vic Rocks group for official instructions and for beautiful rock inspiration - https://m.facebook.com/groups/VICROCKS/... 21.01.2022 Thanks for the shout out Yarra Ranges Youth
19.01.2022 We were bursting with pride this morning listening to two of our awesome Ambassadors speaking as panelists on the Yarra Ranges Council and Yarra Ranges Youth Climate Plan Webinar. They spoke passionately about the work they do as Ambassadors to look after the planet and educate the community, and encouraged other young people to use their voice. The future belongs to the kids! #climateaction #webinar
19.01.2022 THE AMBASSADORS ARE BACK!! And we’ve cleaned up Belgrave It was great to be back together again and to welcome some newbies to the gang to! We spent the morning taking part in Clean Up Australia Day and then played some platypus games in the gorgeous sunshine! We’ll post the results from our Clean Up later, but it’s safe to say that these kids have prevented LOADS of items of rubbish from being washed down the drains and ending up in our beautiful creeks and rivers
18.01.2022 Huge thanks to the team from Healthy Rivers, Healthy Bay for running our Ambassadors Zoom catch up this morning. We all had lots of fun learning about the issues of stormwater run-off into our creeks and what simple things we can do to help our environment. Although none of us wanted to go swimming in Jess’ pretend bay after she’d filled it with rubbish, leaf litter, oil and dog poo
16.01.2022 What a fantastic Youth Voice for Climate Action webinar we had today! PEG founder, Jen, was on the panel talking about how she created a path to work in the environment, and what changes she’d like to see in the future to support Climate Action,... Then two of our Ambassadors spoke passionately about the work they do and how they hoped to inspire others to look after the planet. Quote of the day: ‘I joined the Platypus Ambassadors because I knew I had to make a change to protect the environment’
16.01.2022 Well this was a first - teaching about platypus to a group of 40 grade 4’s via Zoom! Thanks so much for inviting me @greenschoolbali - it was amazing to chat to you all in lots of different cities & countries. And I have Pete the Platypus with me. The only downside is that the kids don’t get to stroke his super soft fur! #platypus #environmentaleducation #distancelearning
14.01.2022 Mount Field National Park in Tasmania had a wonderfully healthy platypus population. But, even so, these photos of mating platypuses is incredibly rare and beautiful
14.01.2022 CALLING ALL ARTISTS Create a poster teaching about the dangers of litter to platypus and you could not only win some gorgeous prizes, but your picture could become part of the Bacchus Marsh Platypus Alliance’s campaign!!
13.01.2022 Really important reminder here that while more people are out enjoying nature, we must still be careful to not interfere or destroy it. Stick to the paths. Don’t disturb nesting sites. You could inadvertently cause so much damage.
13.01.2022 HAPPY EASTER!! Did anyone get the original egg-laying mammal today?
12.01.2022 Toot toot!! Echidna trains are coming down the track
10.01.2022 Today we remember one of our dearest Anbassadors, Harper, who tragically died one year ago Our hearts broke the day he died. Not only had we lost a wonderful, young friend, but we knew the world had lost an amazing person who was going to make a difference. But we take pride in the fact that in his short 10 years, he already made a big impact. He helped clean up over 2000 items of litter, he helped plant over 1000 trees (some of which are already 3+ metres tall), he hel...ped build and sell nest boxes for native wildlife, and he was part of the reason that Opera House Nets were banned in Victoria, which has saved countless platypuses. Harper was everything that we hoped an Ambassador would be. We hope we helped guide and inspire him. We know we all have to work harder for the planet to try to fill the void he left. Keep shining bright, Harper, we miss you xxx
09.01.2022 As Melbourne is back in lockdown again, we had to go back to Zoom for our Ambassador session Huge thanks to Jess from Dolphin Research Institute for teaching us all about marine life and what we can do to protect it, even if we don’t live near the sea. My favourite fact was learning how dolphin mums tell off their naughty kids The Ambassadors all pledged to help to keep plastic out of the oceans by doing a range of activities - some will make beeswax wraps instead of using gladwrap, some will create posters to teach others, and some are going to do litter collections in their neighbourhood. Go team!!
09.01.2022 And the results are in.... 1654 items of litter collected We saw a real decrease in the amount of plastic - only six plastic straws, a couple of coffee cups and zero plastic bags. This is awesome and just proves that legislation, good habits and supportive businesses really can make a difference to our environment. ... Unfortunately, the number of cigarette butts we found dramatically increased Please, if you’re smoking, make sure to dispose of the butts carefully, otherwise we risk dangerous toxin getting into our waterways and no one wants to swim in that. Especially not platypus. But let’s give these amazing Ambassadors a Covid-safe high five for doing such excellent work and helping to keep our planet healthy
07.01.2022 Hands up if you, or someone you know, is under 25 and interested in climate action Join Yarra Ranges Youth and Yarra Ranges Council this Thursday at 2pm for a fantastic webinar supporting young people to have a voice when protecting the planet, and learn about working in the environmental field. Not only will PEG founder, Jen, be on the panel talking about her career, but two of our Ambassadors will return to discuss their experiences and hopes for the future. It’s set to be an awesome webinar so make sure you register and join us
07.01.2022 Looking for school holiday activities? Check out Prime Sci’s online learning activities. We are particularly excited by the Healthy Rivers Healthy Bay class because they’ll be teaching all about how to keep our waterways healthy. And clean water makes for happy platypus!!
04.01.2022 We’re back!! After a four month pandemic hiatus it was awesome to catch up with a few of our Ambassadors again. It was only a small group due to government restrictions, but that didn’t stop us exploring and learning about our environment. Today we went for a walk to find frogs using the fantastic Melbourne Water Frog Census app, then looked for frog food aka macroinverterbrates in the frog pond water at Birdsland Top things we learnt today:... 1) All creatures need clean, healthy water to thrive and survive 2) Mosquito larvae have snorkels in their butts 3) The Victorian Smooth Froglet has the best call to dance to See more
04.01.2022 Happy birthday Harper https://www.facebook.com/harpersarmy/videos/336955627547904/
03.01.2022 Harper was one of our Ambassadors, and it broke our hearts when he died. His passion and dedication for the environment was clear, and we knew he was going to make a big impact on our planet. But instead we must do it for him. Please join us in supporting Harper’s Army so together we can create a cleaner, healthier planet
01.01.2022 We are so excited that a couple of our awesome Ambassadors will be on the panel for this webinar! They’ll be talking about the actions they’ve taken to advocate, champion and educate about climate change, and why it’s so important for young people to have a voice. If you know young people in your life who are interested in the environment, sustainability or the climate, then make sure they watch this on Saturday morning
