01.01.2022 August 9 is the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. This year’s theme is COVID-19 and Indigenous peoples’ resilience. During this pandemic, we ...have seen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples taking a stand to protect their communities and Elders. Just this week, Mutitjulu residents blocked the entrance of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to protect the community from a potential COVID-19 outbreak. The Australia Institute reported in July that First Nations peoples had outperformed the rest of the community in preventing the spread of Coronavirus. They praised the fact Aboriginal-led services recognised early that health literacy was just as important as the delivery of health services. This is yet another example of why community control and Indigenous input into policy is integral for protecting Indigenous communities. Today we acknowledge the hard work and resilience of our Indigenous communities to lessen the spread of COVID-19, and the ongoing value of their unique contributions, knowledge and culture.
