25.01.2022 Playitt 26/11/20 Big shout out to Bill Payne whose absence from the band due to illness was of concern; get well quick Bill, Norm was great as lead guitarist, but by his own admission, way out of his comfort zone! Norm, Chas, Peter, Geoff, and Roger made up this week’s band for our Calypso theme night and some delivered a vocal contribution as well. Items included Just Married , a Marty Robbins favourite, and The Wanderer by Dion. Jan was the first of tonight’s walk ups a...Continue reading

24.01.2022 Playitt 27/08/2020 First, the good news; our favourite percussionist, Ernie Smith is making a good recovery from the stroke he suffered a week or so ago, is showing us his fighting spirit and is loving hearing from anyone who is able to ring and talk to him. Unfortunately the RBH is in lockdown so he can’t entertain visitors yet, but his sense of humour isn’t damaged and can’t wait to rejoin us at Playitt. Ernie’s daughter Amy has set up a Go Fund Me page to help cover the...Continue reading

22.01.2022 EKKA theme night.

21.01.2022 A terrific night.

21.01.2022 Forgot to add, today Saturday 24th is Ernie's birthday! guess what he ordered for his birthday lunch ??? Baked bean sandwiches and lemon meringue pie!! Go Ernie!!

21.01.2022 Playitt 24/09/2020 We had quite a few very well-dressed gangsters and villains respond to the invitation to join us on this occasion, not least of all was Norm in his shiny waistcoat and gaudy tie! Thank you to all who got into the spirit. The Band was in fine form and got the ball rolling with instruments and vocals including some Beatles, Merle Haggard, The Dubliners and Glen Campbell. Chrissy never disappoints and was equal to the task with the Frankie Lymon memory Goody,...Continue reading

20.01.2022 New performers and regulars.

20.01.2022 Playitt 17/09/20 While it is unfortunate that our Music Cousins from the Homestead Country Music Group are temporarily without a venue due to some renovations on their premises complicated by covid restrictions, it certainly has been a delight to share our venue with them as they await their return home. Playitt has benefitted from their participation in performance and patronage at our house and feedback suggests that their quality input has extended and enhanced our off...Continue reading

19.01.2022 Lots of fun was had by all at Play itt

19.01.2022 Playitt 03/12/20 Well I’ve had confirmation this week of something I have suspected for some time; my news contributions have become too long and tedious and are matching those things on face book that you never finish reading. In my efforts to include everyone who contributes to our evenings, I’ve managed to get carried away on a tide of information that has become repetitive. My apologies; be assured that this will be addressed forthwith. All performances will be noted as a...lways, but not all will be commented on. I apologise to those not individually acknowledged, it is done in the interests of sustained readership and I would appreciate hearing some feedback about the change of content. Coincidentally, we had one of the best nights ever this week, with numbers swelled by visitors from car clubs and a full board of performers. Highlights of the evening were the efforts of our magnificent band, Roger on saxophone, Alan on keys, Bill, Norm and Joe on lead and rhythm guitars, Geoff on drums, not to mention the calibre of our walk up performers. Good to see Kev back after a few weeks absence, still intermittently countin’ the beat on bass. We welcomed two more bands, throughout the evening, Here Comes Trouble and Who’s Counting, both comprising well-known and talented friends of Playitt. The genres of rock, swing, jazz and country among others were in evidence using the expertise of such celebrated artists as Harry Belafonte, Beatles, Mary Hopkin, Teresa Brewer, Johnny Rivers, UB40, Boney M., Helen Reddy, Ray Charles, The Drifters, The Crystals, Rick Nelson, Kay Starr, to name just a conservative few. Apart from the usual roof raising finale delivered by the ever exuberant Kiwi Elvis, highlights were our two regular ladies, mama sassy Ricky (All of Me Ella Fitzgerald) and little sassy Chrissy, (Santa Baby Eartha Kitt) continuing to deliver the saucy fun stuff that has so affectionately badged them at Playitt. Next week will be the final Playitt for the year, and will be highlighted by the Christmas theme and Margaret’s magnificent Christmas feast: book NOW for a full roast dinner and sweets for $20.00! Beat that! Come as a Christmas elf, Santa Claus, Rudolph or a Christmas tree, but make sure you get there, Woodford Bowls Club, Webb Lane, Thursday the 10th of December, 6:30-9:00ish. Watch this space for news of resumption in 2021. Crystal See more

19.01.2022 Playitt 6th May 2021 I know indulging in a glass of whatever or a hot mug of cocoa, on the couch in front of the fire on these chilly autumnal evenings, has loads of appeal and often outvotes going out in the said chilly air. Once one arrives though, at the doors of the magical Woodford Bowls Club for the weekly fix of Playitt, the warmth from the happy event transcends the ravages of the cold evening and we are again in our happy place. Some succumbed to the former option th...Continue reading

19.01.2022 Playitt 01/10/2020 A magnificent turn out to Playitt this week with a full house of patrons and a full to overflowing board of performers! The night ran overtime and many visitors were unable to see it through but those hardy souls who remained were treated to superb entertainment to the very end. There are sixteen regular spots on the chalkboard and our entertainers are asked to choose a spot thereon on arrival, and chalk in their preferred spot in the sequence. We will have...Continue reading

18.01.2022 Playitt 05/11/20 The Beatles Honey Don’t sung by rhythm guitarist Geoff McKenzie, and Dave Dudley’s Six Days on the Road from lead guitarist Bill Payne, got the wheels rolling for another great night of music and fun at Playitt. Other band members were Geoff Hillier, drummer extraordinaire, Norm Smith, whose guitar very obediently does whatever he asks, and in the absence of regular bass guitarist Peter Biggs, we were joined by equally proficient Joe. Managed all night wi...Continue reading

16.01.2022 A different sort of evening.

13.01.2022 A rocking night at Playitt

12.01.2022 13th May 2021 Norm’s It’s all Over now Baby Blue, by Van Morrison, Kev’s Land Down Under by Men at Work, Eddie Rabbit’s Drivin’ My Life Away from Alan and Shakin Stevens’ You Drive Me Crazy done by Chas were the opening contributions from the band members at another fabulous musical evening of Playitt. We are missing Bill tonight who is sadly absent following the death of his brother George. The Playitt family shares your grief, Bill. The ball was well and truly rolli...Continue reading

11.01.2022 Playitt 29/10/20 Remember Little Topsy in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, very old story by Harriet Beecher Stowe. She just growed according to herself. Bit like Playitt, it’s just growing too! We had a full board of performers again this week and some were left waiting in the wings, or at the bar or wherever if time permitted their inclusion later. We were obliged to limit each performer to one item each in order to fit everyone in and our wonderful regulars rose to the occasion. We ...Continue reading

07.01.2022 Playitt 10/09/2020 Hey! How did it get to be September already! Happy Spring everyone and let’s all hope for a less stressful time as we approach summer and the festive season. We were pleased to welcome Jill, best mate of Ernie, with an update on his progress. I’ve yet to demonstrate the finer points of microphone skills to Jill but Ernie said she’s a trouble maker anyway so my chances are minimal at best. Jill’s initial report was positive as usual, but she had barely regai...Continue reading

05.01.2022 Busy, busy...a big night.

05.01.2022 The second last for the year.

05.01.2022 PLAYITT 2021 Happy New year everyone; we made it into 2021!! Sincerely hope everyone had a safe, peaceful and Happy Christmas and are primed to take on board whatever this year has to offer. Any improvement on the last eight months will be a bonus. But down to business, by the time this hits the regular targets we will be only a couple of weeks short of our first Playitt for 2021, exciting hey! So limber up for the event, and prepare to set sail for another year of our favou...rite weekly outing! As suggested at the close of last year’s proceedings, the 28th of January will be the date and Australia Day will be the theme. We’ve always made a special effort to celebrate this occasion and I reckon our country deserves a special pat on the back for steering us through the recent months of chaos. Not everyone came through unscathed, small business was the big loser and those of us who escaped that kind of devastation should be mindful of, and sympathetic to their situation, especially those whose loved ones were lost as a result. But with true Aussie spirit, every effort was made to keep the wheels turning, so let’s celebrate and give Oz a virtual handshake. Of all our theme nights, this would have to be one of the easiest to dress up for. We have so much Aussie music, so many characters to choose from and icons to emulate it’s a piece a cake Mate! So let’s have you there embracing the atmosphere at the Woodford Bowls Club, 6:30 pm 9:00 pm on that date, 28/01/21, free entry, meals and bar service available, and the best music and musicians this side of anywhere!! See you there. Crystal See more

04.01.2022 Playitt 20/08/2020 Hello again from Playitt Central! May I begin by passing on the important news that our wonderful regular percussionist Ern Smith is having some serious health issues and is currently in hospital. We weren’t aware of this on Thursday night but noted his absence with concern. Hurry back Ern, you are an inspirational bloke and a pillar of Playitt. We all send our love and prayers. STOP PRESS! I’ve talked to Jill; Ernie is back on the ward. He’s got a few hur...Continue reading

03.01.2022 Playitt 15/10/2020 Our favourite Thursday night outing continues to deliver the quality entertainment we have come to expect and this week lived up to that expectation. Top news for our beautiful Margaret , she’s beaten the big C and is looking and feeling great. Well done Girl!! As always, the band kicked the night off with a memories bracket including Robin Luke’s Suzie Darlin’, Santo & Johnny’s Sleepwalk, from the 1950s. Those who remember the enchanting guitar wo...Continue reading

02.01.2022 Playitt 19/11/2020 If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Covid 19, it is patience! We haven’t been happy with the multiple restrictions imposed on us in our day to day lives, but as some rules are eased we can see the value in being patient and allowing things to proceed in a fashion that impacts as few of us as possible. As some social gathering is freed up we find our Playitt selves once again free to move around the venue and provided we are outside, free to dance! Marg...Continue reading

01.01.2022 Playitt 22/10/2020 Most often lately, expressions of pleasure about events happening around us are punctuated by the observation that things will never be the same again. But we mustn’t allow that inevitability to cast a shadow over the things that haven’t, and won’t, change. Like the love and appreciation of music, abundantly evident at Playitt every week. We may not have Strauss or Mozart, names synonymous with music appreciation of a classical persuasion, but boy! We hav...Continue reading

01.01.2022 and Judy filled the break with some nifty work on her piano accordion

01.01.2022 Playitt 04/09/2020 Dare I suggest that Covid 19 restrictions are partially responsible for the perceived growth in popularity of events like Playitt? At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what is doing it, let’s just keep it happening! Another lively night with a few new faces obviously having a great time, some old ones bobbing up again, and all getting into the Playitt spirit. Spoke to Ernie, and to Jill on Wednesday and while progress is being made, and Ernie is in good...Continue reading
