25.01.2022 Thought to share this little video about empathy. If we could all understand this concept from a younger age by seeing the world from a different perspective other than our own - and grasp that it's ok for people to share different opinions and ideals about things. Imagine - we could help to foster a generation of children who have an ability to engage in healthy and positive communication and play with their peers from all walks of life. #empathy #communication #positiveplay #futuregenerations #playact

18.01.2022 Permanence vs Momentary lapse of reason A few birthdays ago overtired overwhelmed and over it, I reached snap point with my children and had a yell in the kitchen. I called them selfish, uncaring children and finished with a petulant this is the worst birthday ever! I catastrophised the moment, saw two doleful confused little faces and immediately wanted to stuff the words back into my tired pregnant self and start again. I have my excuses, panic stricken about another compli...Continue reading

16.01.2022 The statistics in this article are alarming to say the least. The importance of instilling the art of play and healthy communication in our children has never been so important. Our intrinsic human trait of being able to connect and communicate in person with our fellow peers is so incredibly important for our mental well being. I fear for our world if we continue to live precariously through these technological devices. Please put down your phones, your life cannot be meaningfully lived through them. Live, love, laugh, breathe, feel and connect with those around you. Please . #putdownyourphone #connect #communicate #breatheintheworld #explorenature #bewithfamily #playact

15.01.2022 Interesting article about how to let young children move through their feelings and help others to understand and accept where their little friends are at.

14.01.2022 The Strength Switch by Dr Lea Waters is a game changing book that reveals the extraordinary results of focusing on our children strengths rather than always trying to correct their weaknesses. By showing us how to throw the strength switch Dr Lea Waters demonstrates how we can help our children build resilience, optimism and achievement. A small shift can yield enormous results.

13.01.2022 The Pollyanna Effect Melinda Butel When I was a child my dear father called me Pollyanna, partly monikered for my long golden plaits and crinkly nose, partly for my talent for optimism. Our favourite game was the gladness game and I could find something to be glad about in just about everything and everyone. That early ability to see sunshine through rain, good in most everyone, has been my saving grace. Through many a chaotic despairing m...oment, sometimes born of circumstance, mostly of my own making, I have rock bottomed and bounced back. That is not to say I did so without anxiousness or grief or at times self loathing. For I was anxious, and I did suffer a lack of confidence and low self esteem. But I was ever optimistic for redemption, change, brilliance, stupid perfection, optimistic for love, for great things, for world peace. When I think on those darker days, those grievous times, those confused and heady crazy times when floors fell beneath me and the earth spun on its axis, I know my anchor was optimism. It buoyed me and gave me a raft. Had I not had the bright light at the end of the tunnel, had I not had the ability to lift where would I be ? Depression is tied to pessimism, married to hopelessness, shackled by helplessness. It carves a hollow in the soul and strips a life of simple pleasure. In children we see a growing percentage of depression. So is optimism teachable? Is optimism something that can be practiced. Can we create healthy neural pathways simply by practicing gladness? My feeling is we can. Play the gladness game, foster gratitude journals, encourage positive language. Ask your children to name three wonderful things about themselves. If they struggle, find one thing wonderful, name it and work on discovering more wonderful things. Praise children for acts of kindness and honesty, bravery and vulnerability as well as achievements at school or recreation. At dinner time ask random thoughtful questions. Whats your greatest strength? Who do you admire the most and why? What does respect mean? Children are smart. Their answers will delight you, sometimes floor you, always inform you. And knowing your children, wanting to know them, seeing them clearly is the greatest security you can give. It costs nothing but its value is everything. And most generally there is something about everything that you can be glad about, if you keep hunting long enough to find it. Eleanor H. Porter, Pollyanna See more

11.01.2022 WINNING Approaching a throng of kids, parents, cameras, high held phones on a wintry Melbourne Saturday morning watching my eldest child skip through the middle to join his team mates I saw a table gleaming with football trophies. There must have been 70 of them, lined up, impressive, large. I turned to another parent and asked Is there one of those for every child? to which I received some vigorous nodding. Each childs name was called alphabetically and in their age gr...Continue reading

04.01.2022 The Optimistic Child by Martin Seligman offers parents the tools used successfully to teach children how to recognise and challenge negative thoughts - a life skill that changes helplessness into mastery and bolsters genuine self esteem. Drawn from a long term research project, The Penn depression Prevention Project, the book looks at the link between pessimism and depression, and provides parents skills to teach children to apply optimism skills that curb depression, boost school performance and improve physical health. Skills that then provide children with the resilience they need to approach teenage and adult years with confidence. Such a fantastic read.

04.01.2022 What a great way to show kids how it feels inside to be bullied.

03.01.2022 One of the most special short films I've watched in a while. 'Alike' shares an incite into our modern society and beautifully animates how not following your dreams or finding your creative love takes the colour out of our life. Really loved this - worth a watch!
