22.01.2022 Ive gotten a lot of responses from parents asking why we need to teach anti-racism. Why cant we just teach children to be kind and inclusive? The problem with... strategies based solely on inclusivity and diversity is that they assume a level playing field for all. Anti-racism recognizes that racist beliefs have permeated our culture and created systemic problems. Rather than just talking about it, anti-racism asks that we actively work against it. White parents especially dont talk about [race], because they believe that kids should be colorblind. But studies show that as early as the age of 2 children begin to define people based on race. - Ibram X. Kendi A few years back, a black girl joined my classroom of mostly white two-year-olds halfway through the school year. LIving in mostly-white Portland, meeting her was the first direct experience many of them had with someone who didnt look like them. One child asked if her skin was dirty. Another child told her she couldnt be Elsa, she could only be Moana. It is never too early to talk to kids about race. If we dont do it, children of color have to bear the brunt of our silence. For more resources on raising anti-racist kids, check out the resources The Conscious Kid, Teaching Tolerance, and Mamademics have created.

19.01.2022 Dear Playgroups in the Park participants, volunteers and friends, As you are aware the COVID-19 outbreak has been declared a global pandemic. Counterpoint Community Services and Connect Redfern are closely monitoring the situation. What we have seen so far is that many events big and small are either postponed or cancelled altogether. ... Our main concern is the safety and well-being of the participants of our event, the majority of whom are children. So far there is a fair number of participating groups informing us that they have decided to withdraw from performing and attending Playgroups in the Park in Sydney due to concern about the virus. Also, the Prime Minister and state and territory leaders want all non-essential gatherings of more than 500 people to be suspended from Monday amid fears about the spread of COVID-19. Under these circumstances, Counterpoint Community Services and Connect Redfern have decided that Aprils Playgroups in the Park is cancelled. This is a very difficult decision but we believe that this decision is made in the best interest of all involved. We thank you for your continued support and are looking forward to your participation in our future festivals. Best wishes, Thomas and Jo
