23.01.2022 I've taken the kids away camping for a few days to unwind in nature, feast on marshmallows and to do exactly this! Like so many other things, children need to... practise risk taking. How else can they learn to judge risk; To learn which risks to take and which ones to leave well alone? We keep our kids safer by teaching them how to take risks; Not by protecting our children from these important learning opportunities... Dr Kaylene Henderson - Child Psychiatrist See more

07.01.2022 It's spring! This is a magical time when the whole wide, blooming, cheeping, croaking, wriggling world is coming back to life and the sun is shining a little bit more. It's the perfect time to bring out the outdoor adventurer, discoverer and scientist in every child. Spending time outside means healthier and more physically active children and spring is one of the most inviting times to get out into the great outdoors and explore nature. Playing freely in nature allows child...ren to develop their problem-solving skills and moving around obstacles such as trees and boulders develops physical and gross motor development. Mild spring weather is also a perfect time to spend outdoors with babies too as playing outside with your baby helps to strengthen their immune system. 05.01.2022 Do your kids like to engage in play fighting? This type of play is beneficial and necessary for the development and maintenance of social awareness, understanding the body language and emotions of others, as well as regulating behaviour. For bigger kids, rough and tumble play satisfies the drive for action and adventure in children. It allows risk taking within safe boundaries. Rough and tumble play allows both girls and boys to test and practice physical and social skills, ...take risks within safe boundaries and learn about their bodies. Children who have engaged regularly in this type of play learn to distinguish between innocent play and aggression. This helps with their social, problem solving and protective behaviour skills.
