22.01.2022 The lovely editors at Kidspot asked me to write a guest post on the good old Bumbo seat - always a controversial topic!!

18.01.2022 Your four year old son walks on his tip toes. Not all the time, but a lot of the time. He will walk on flat feet when you ask him to, but before you know it he is running about on his toes again. It makes you nervous is this normal? Will he just grow out of it? Will other children tease him? Is it going to cause problems down the track? Maybe it’s the result of the 17 mins he spent in a Jolly Jumper at a friend’s house when he was six months old, massive parenting fail. You googled it once, but by the third click you were fairly sure he had some terrible illness, and decided to file it in the back of your mind under "Things to keep me awake at 2am".

18.01.2022 Have a child or know a child who seems to be creeping slowly closer to the ground rather than growing taller with age? One of the most common questions I get as a physio working with children is how to encourage better posture. The question often comes from a Mum or Dad with a history of neck or back pain and a standing weekly appointment with the chiro, keen to direct their offspring down a different path. There is no one size fits all approach to managing poor posture, but this week's blog post looks at some general strategies and exercises that will help most kids (and adults....) improve their posture.

12.01.2022 CORE CONTROL - Core Stability Class for 9-12 year olds 4 week blocks running 1. Wednesdays 4:45pm May 3-24 2. Saturdays 11am May 6-27 As children enter their pre-teens, they become more able to engage in structured core stability work and to work on improving their body awareness. At this age we start to introduce more structured mat work with a particular focus on improving proprioception and voluntary control. We continue to keep the class fun, with a mixture of more tradi...tional introductory pilates activities and high level gross motor and coordination games. Each class will be structured to meet the individual needs and goals of the children attending as identified during their assessment, and every child will get their own individual home program. Who: Any child will benefit from working on their stability and control, but this class may particularly benefit children with: Low tone/hypermobility Aches and Pains Rheumatological conditions Difficulty sitting still or doing fine motor tasks Chronic respiratory issues Poor posture Coordination or Balance Difficulties Cost: If you have ancillary (Physiotherapy) cover on your private health insurance, you should receive a rebate on individual and group classes. This makes this a very cost effective way to access physiotherapy services - Initial pre block 1:1 assessment (after school appointments available Wednesday and Fridays) - $90 - Block of 4 small group classes - $100 - Free on site parking How do I book? 12.01.2022 I am by no means a headache expert, and have complete respect for my colleagues that successfully manage clients with chronic head and neck pain day in and out. Working in a paediatric tertiary hospital in oncology and neuro-rehabilitation, I have spent time managing the children who fall through the cracks, be it with intracranial pathology, chronic pain or misdiagnosis. This article is for my physio colleagues who may stumble upon a child or teenager in their practice seeking treatment for headaches, and recognise that kids are a little different and often need a different approach.

10.01.2022 LONG AND LIMBER - Pilates Class for Teens 4 week blocks running 1. Wednesdays 5:30pm May 3-24 2. Saturdays 11:45am May 6-27... Many changes occur as your child becomes a teenager. Long hours of study combined with the rapid physical changes associated with puberty and a move towards a screen based lifestyle can lead to changes in posture, strength and physical activity levels. Sedentary teens will benefit from exercises to maintain muscle strength and length and improve poor posture and alignment. Active teens are often prone to injury as their rapidly changing body struggles to keep up with the demands placed on it. Classes incorporate traditional mat work pilates with activities that focus on problem areas in adolescence hamstring length, knee pain, poor postural habits, etc. Teens will be asked to reflect on their areas for improvement at the beginning of each block, and particular emphasis will be placed on targeted areas of need. Cost: If you have ancillary (Physiotherapy) cover on your private health insurance, you should receive a rebate on individual and group classes. This makes this a very cost effective way to access physiotherapy services - Initial pre block 1:1 assessment (after school appointments available Wednesday and Fridays) - $90 - Block of 4 small group classes - $100 - Free on site parking How do I book? 09.01.2022 W sitting can be a controversial topic, up there with gun control, immunisations and the Oxford Comma. A quick google search would have you believe that W sitting is a horrid habit that will doom your child to a lifetime of back pain, orthotics, rubbish handwriting, terrible job prospects and probably a drug habit. I can assure you, I have not found a single study linking W sitting to university drop out rates or marriage failures. On the other hand, there are many people out there confident W sitting is a variant of normal, like being left handed, and that attempting to alter this habit is akin to the draconian measures of the 1950s classroom.

08.01.2022 During my time as a physiotherapist, I have had the privilege of working with families as they tackle seemingly unsurmountable hurdles, find strength they didn’t know they had, and develop emotional resiliency I can only begin to understand. There are families cradling their perfect newborn, being told their child has cystic fibrosis and a challenging and potentially shortened life ahead of them. There are families who have brought their once healthy child to the doctor for... what they thought was a viral illness, only to find themselves looking down the barrel of a cancer diagnosis and a myriad of treatment decisions. There are families who have attended appointment after appointment with their premature baby, diligently working on their development at home, to be blind-sided at the suggestion of a cerebral palsy diagnosis. And then there are other families who just want a name, a definition, a potential solution or specialist or intervention for their child, an idea of what the future might hold. See more

Help your child build a strong foundation for work and play.
