24.01.2022 Hot on the heels of 'Dear Australia', we are thrilled today to announce more than $370,000 in commissions and assistance that will go directly to playwrights and their collaborators. Dear Australia was an astonishing Australian online work that all theatregoers should watch a deeply impressive act of collective imagination and a polyphonic suite of dramatic shorts that holds a mirror to the national soul (The Age). But it mustn’t stop there. ... Our theatres are, at best, needing to operate like skeletons or, at worst, staring at insolvency. The best thing PWA can do right now to is help ensure that there is a rich, diverse array of outstanding new works available when these theatres are once again able to open to audiences. That’s why we’ve made a substantial investment directly in playwrights and their closest collaborators. In recent years some of the greatest successes of the Australian theatre have been new plays by Australian playwrights. That momentum mustn’t be lost.

22.01.2022 And here is another Ignition Project for 2020. Creative development is with Belvoir St Theatre Ignition enhances the creation of ambition and diverse Australian work, through commissions with Playwriting Australia. Stay tuned as we roll out all of our incredible Ignition commissions. Ignition was announced with more than $370,000 of PWA commissions and support announced recently (more at bit.ly/3gIz0AN).

18.01.2022 Kirsty Marillier (VIC) is the winner of the $30,000 Max Afford Award! The Award is part of more than $370,000 of PWA commissions and support made this week (more at bit.ly/3gIz0AN). Kirsty's play THE ZAP is a high intensity, schoolgirl, coming-of-age play set in Helix, a town feeling the brunt of an impending bushfire disaster. THE ZAP is a feminist, genre-bending work exploring the complexity of gender within marginalised groups.... Kirsty Marillier is an actor and emerging playwright currently based in Melbourne / Naarm. Being a South African woman of colour, Kirsty uses her writing to reclaim her identity and deconstruct the relationships people of colour have with gender, religion, migration and disempowerment, putting social change at the forefront of her intersectional practice. Kirsty trained as an actor at Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), and on stage has performed in Coma Land with Black Swan State Theatre Company, Shabbat Dinner with Rock Surfers Theatre Company and Griffin Theatre Company, A Midsummer Nights Dream, The Tempest and Macbeth with Sport For Jove Theatre. In 2018, Kirsty was a part of the Besen Writers Group with Malthouse Theatre and had her short story Potato Country feature in Black Inc Books Growing Up African anthology. She is currently developing her debut play Orange Thrower - and two other works. Kirsty also performed in the Australian premiere of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne. The Max Afford Award is offered by Perpetual in association with PWA and is an initiative of the late Thelma May Afford, whose will established a fund to offer a prize in memory of her husband.
