11.01.2022 Health Alert A number of whooping cough (pertussis) cases have recently been diagnosed in Mackay in the past week. Whooping cough is highly contagious respiratory infection that affects all ages and can be life threatening for babies and young children.... It often starts like a cold with a runny nose, sneezing and tiredness over several days followed by the characteristic coughing bouts. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent whooping cough A booster dose is recommended for any adult who wants to reduce the risk of infection and hasn't had a booster in the last 10 years. Adults working with infants and young children under 4 years of age and all health care workers should receive a dose of pertussis vaccine. Anyone who has been in close contact with an infectious person should keep a close eye on their own health. If you develop signs of whooping cough in the three weeks following the exposure immediately remove yourself from close contact with others until you have seen your GP. Call ahead.
