20.01.2022 Did you know that after reading about the Smith Family, Anika (Year 5) decided she would collect gifts and toys for those who would normally go without at Christmas. Over 5 days, she approached friends and family to donate and managed to collect 54 toys and gifts. In 2021, Anika hopes to coordinate a larger-scale effort with her Year 5 cohort. Well done Anika! What do you hope to do bigger and better in 2021?

17.01.2022 Last night's Conversations at PLC with Class of 1988 graduate and acting sensation, Caroline Brazier was outstanding. Caroline spoke about how her passion for acting ignited during her time at PLC thanks to her then Drama Teacher, Jenny Hetherington. She described how the #metoo movement had changed her industry for the better and how resilience was an important character trait for all actors who faced regular knock-backs before getting their big break.

16.01.2022 Today we remember Joan Deaman (Baty 1938), who was one of premature twin girls born to Charles and Idarene ‘Renie’ Baty at Nurse Loveland’s Hospital in Perth Street, Cottesloe. Weighing just two pounds at birth, both were so tiny Renie carried them around on pillows for the first months of their life. Sadly Joan’s twin, Yvonne, died at three months in March 1922. Joan however, had a strong fighting spirit and thrived. In 1928, when Miss Janet Phemister was in her first year a...Continue reading
16.01.2022 It's Time Travel Tuesday! Today we take you back to October 1917 when Marion *Jean* Cooke came to PLC with her sister Ada, just a few months after our Cottesloe campus opened. In April 1920 she was one of those who decided to form the Old Collegians' Association (OCA), and was our inaugural Secretary and Treasurer until 1923. She nurtured the OCA through its infancy, until it was firmly established.... Jean rowed, played tennis and bridge, and was active with the Girl Guides; but horses were her real passion. She started pony clubbing and formed a large and very successful show jumping team, taking out many prizes in the The Royal Agricultural Show of Perth. In 1935 she married Justin Walsh, of Egoline, Northam, Western Australia, and, in time, raised their two daughters. She also established Walsh’s Horses, a riding school, and began to breed horses, many of which were champions. In 1954 when HRH Queen Elizabeth came to Perth, one of Jean’s horses - Cotton Tail - was chosen for her to ride. Polio meant the Queen never rode him, but the Governor did! Soon came ‘the Educated Horse’, which led to Dressage, Jumping, and Equestrian Federation Australia, in all of which Jean was heavily involved. Jean was one of WA’s best known horsewomen but when not working with her horses, she was impeccably dressed, and she loved, in particular, hats. During shopping trips to Perth she always stopped by Belle Gladstone’s to try on the many beautiful hats on display, but despite her usual glamorous style, there are very few photos of Jean, as she hated having her photo taken. Jean was still riding at 70 when, in September 1971, she suffered a massive stroke from which she died, in March 1972. Without Jean’s dedication in those early years, the OCA is unlikely to have become what it is today We have deemed Jean to be one of our OCA's 'Black Diamonds'. Tougher than any other form of natural diamond, they are more difficult to cut, and they don’t shine in the traditional sense because they absorb, rather than reflect light. Largely unrecognised, they are the less obvious choice, but we wanted to acknowledge some of our Black Diamonds and their extraordinary contribution to the Old Collegians’ Association. More to come! 08.01.2022 It’s Time Travel Tuesday! Today we take you back to 1983 and have a little look at some of the tour jackets, jumpers and windcheaters worn on some of our Pipe Band’s nine national and international tours. Tour jackets were not only a must-have accessory for any tour group but a safety necessity, so travelling students were easily identified. ... The PLC Pipe Band’s first tour, in 1983, was to tropical Townsville and Alice Springs, with its desert climate for which, incredibly, a tour windcheater was made! Kathy Bonus (Lefroy 1983) recently donated hers to PLC Archives, remembering it was probably only worn on the plane. This tour put the Pipe Band on a national stage. The next tour, to Scotland in 1988, put the Pipe Band on an international stage. That tour jumper was also a blue windcheater and practical for the variable Scottish weather. We even have a photo in our Archives of Miss Barr (1949; Principal 1968-1989) and her assistant, Jan Hedemann (Principal’s Assistant 1950-1992) wearing their tour jumpers! Other Pipe Band tours include those to Tasmania in 1999 (part of a Music Department tour), Melbourne in 2001, the UK in 2005, Singapore twice in 2007 and 2010, and twice also to the Virginia Tattoo in 2013 and 2016. For Singapore, tour t-shirts were chosen in place of the usual jacket or windcheater. Kerry Jones (Drum tutor 1982-2017) recalled she always involved Band members when designing tour jackets over the years. Tours (and tour jumpers) are just some of the many stories being compiled for a history book to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the PLC Pipe Band later this year. Historian Lucy Hair (Williams 1989) is currently a frequent visitor to PLC Archives as she works on it, and we can’t wait to see the end result! Research compiled by Lucy Hair as part of the PLC Pipe Band history project. May 2021
