25.01.2022 More Xmas shopping info. The last line is probably the kicker. I have seen many people get a great deal on the TV and get royally screwed on the rest. P.s if you like to read the age but don't have a subscription, use incognito or private browsing mode, each session resets your usage! https://www.theage.com.au//hi-fi-stitch-ups-to-look-out-fo

24.01.2022 As we all wind down for the holiday season, Plex Tech is busy upgrading Windows 7 computers to Windows Ten. Almost all computers can be upgraded with no Windows licence cost! May we all have a safe and happy time over the holiday season, I will even take a half day on the 25th, and a full day on boxing day. As always, if there is tech trouble drop me a text, message or call. Be well one and all, be kind to your family and friends, eat too much and drink a responsible amount.

24.01.2022 Did you or yours get one of those nifty smart speakers for Xmas this year? Check out what the price is. https://youtu.be/IUEN2TAqlmU

23.01.2022 Today I have a sick laptop on my workbench, it had no antivirus or any security at all, my trusty malware program found 31862 items to remove, a record by 20000. Don't let teenaged boys do there thing without protection. If you can't afford or don't want to pay for ant-virus there are excellent free ones out there, I recommend Avast (I use it on my personal machines) or AVG.

23.01.2022 What's the password ? It's my job to setup loads of systems for people, too many times the passwords aren't available, and yes your email does have a password! Here's a tip to make your digital life smooth sailing, grab one of the old school phone books, you know a-z down the side, when you open an account flip to the corresponding page f for Facebook etc, write down the website or company, the username, the password and any other relevant info, and date it. Trust me, you will thank me later. Keep your book safe at home. Do not have a word document on the desktop titled passwords, lose that and your digital life goes goodbye.

22.01.2022 I almost always recommend using a laser printer, or no printer at all, if possible. Inkjets and the ink are the most massive scam, HP now agrees. https://www.gizmodo.com.au//hp-may-finally-stop-screwing-/

22.01.2022 Plex tech made the front page today. Can't wait for the fibre to go through BENALLA!

22.01.2022 TikTok, the clock is ticking on this time bomb. Do you use it on your phone, your kids on there having fun. Stop laughing and read this. SCARY STUFF https://www.boredpanda.com/tik-tok-reverse-engineered-data/

21.01.2022 What are those Telstra workers doing in Benalla? Sorry it's not the NBN being rolled out, but it is the first stage of the process, they are checking all the ducts/conduits for access when the tasty fibre goes in sometime next year. I will keep you informed of the NBN rollout as it progresses. June 20118 in theory. http://www.nbnco.com.au//check-your-addre/in-planning.html

21.01.2022 Facebook has been in the news this week. This article explains the background of the story. The last paragraph is the most important thing, if you have taken a quiz in the last few years, your data is in some shady companies hands. https://www.gizmodo.com.au//just-53-people-used-the-app-t/

21.01.2022 Had the pleasure of having an apprentice help me out with a new laptop for a local Benalla resident. Rob or Roy, they look similar. Is a champion Pappilion all the way from France. #perksofthejob

19.01.2022 Who's cutting loose for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I usually perceive most "Bargains" to be either come in doorbusters or items with large profit margins. Have a read of this article if you want to cool your toes. https://melmagazine.com//sales-myths-black-friday-sales-st

19.01.2022 I have never been a fan of reckon/quicken, they have always been difficult to work with, this though, total dick move! https://www.theage.com.au//reckon-accounting-software-crip

18.01.2022 Happy Monday Benalla, In good news, I'm going to have a quiet week, in less good news, the mobile systems is being worked on, and it's going to be flakey, maybe all week. Keep your shields up until you don't have to!

18.01.2022 Excellent article on Facebook hacking vs spoofing. This is VERY common at the moment. https://kallmaker.com/difference-hacking-spoofing-on-faceb/

17.01.2022 Are you paying for your security system? Maybe you should stop and let the Microsoft system take over. if you need a hand, drop me a line. If you still are paying for this stuff, it shouldn't be more than $50 per year. https://au.pcmag.com//windows-defender-achieves-best-antiv

17.01.2022 Are you a Foxtel subscriber? Feel free to read this and stick it to the "man". https://www.theage.com.au//35-for-the-full-package-foxtel-

16.01.2022 A choice piece of warranty information from the always excellent choice magazine. Don't ever purchase the extended warranty, it's implied.

16.01.2022 Plex Technology was tasked with retrieving data from 3.5 in floppy disks today, took a bit of hunting for a computer in the archive that would do the job, in the end all the files were retrieved. The height of storage tech in the early 90"s it would take 2000 of them to fill a standard 16G USB stick. Have times not changed!! #oldschool #floppydisk

15.01.2022 It's cybercrime awareness week. Check yourself. https://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/

15.01.2022 This FREE course is kicking off next week at the Benalla Library. As you are reading this on facebook, it's maybe not for you, but if you know someone that struggles with technology, get them involved. All you need to do is call or drop and sign up. See you on the 26th @10AM

15.01.2022 Xmas tip, don't forget the batteries, get some AAA ones as well. Buying a phone or game console, carefully unpack it and run the updates before gifting it. You'll be winning. Have a safe and merry season to one and all. Plex Technology is open over the Xmas period, call me Xmas day if you like to pay the extra fee!

14.01.2022 Lets talk about backups..... There is a simple rule, the more valuable the data, the more often and more robust the backups are. The banks run a duplicate system so they never* have a problem. Most businesses backup at the end of the day. How often do you backup? Backing up the the same drive on your computer is not really good enough. Go grab a USB stick or external drive and copy all your photos, documents and other important stuff, paste it to your new drive and smugly smile, you are a winner today. Of course I can assist on automating this process and also store your data securely on the Plex Tech servers. The scenario I suggest is "your house burned down, how is your data, where is your backup?"

13.01.2022 Good news everybody, the NBN rollout in Benalla is complete, it's not just the westside enjoying the superfast NBN speeds now, get on board, contact your service provider, talk to the people at Stolz if you want to go with Telstra/Bigpond or give me a call for advice. The fastest OLD internet is roughly the same speed as the SLOWEST NBN speed.

11.01.2022 Sometimes the problem is closer to home than you might think, the Plex tech internet connection went down yesterday, a huge problem when you have loads of work to do. After logging the issue with Exetel, I discovered my dog had attempted an under house escape, cable destroyed, thanks to Terry Ellis, I was up and running quickly.

10.01.2022 In these troubling times, here is the most tiny piece of good news. I deal a lot with polystyrene, it's awful stuff that has an easy replacement in moulded cardboard. I think consumers would pay the proverbial dollar to avoid it. https://www.express.co.uk//Samsung-4K-TV-update-box-re/amp

10.01.2022 Alas it comes to an end, Windows 7 will no longer be supported next January. There is plenty of time to upgrade, I can upgrade your windows 7 to windows ten, with no licence cost. Take the opportunity to upgrade your computer to a new technology SSD drive at the same time. https://www.microsoft.com//window/end-of-windows-7-support

10.01.2022 There's a new scam in town, will, to be honest, there is a new one every day. You know the drill, read the article, take the quiz. https://scamspotter.org/scams/

10.01.2022 It's been a busy couple of days with this nasty Word virus and the power outage. Please have a read of the link attached, important stuff!! https://www.mailguard.com.au//warning-sophisticated-email-

10.01.2022 This scam is rampant, I get calls about this one twice a week. Tell your Granny, your mum and any oldies as they are more likely to get stung by this. Telstra and Microsoft really don't care if your computer has malware on it. I do, and I can get rid of it!! If these clowns call you, just hang up, or give them my number. https://www.gizmodo.com.au//ftc-puts-tech-support-scammer/

09.01.2022 This is very true, I wonder how we will all cope on the day the internet goes down. https://www.gifng.com/wow/3252/

09.01.2022 How much are you paying for your mobile plan (90%) of Aussie adults have one. Is a contract the way to go? Which network give the best coverage? Check out this handy resource to see if you can save a few bucks. Feel free to drop any questions in the comments and I shall help guide you. https://www.whistleout.com.au

08.01.2022 It's that time of year again when we have to do our consumer duty. If a phone is on the wish list, check out this handy guide. Don't be afraid to snag a 2nd hand one off the kids/grandkids, 2-3 year old phones are still great performers, if you get the right one. https://www.gizmodo.com.au//the-best-phones-you-can-buy-r/

08.01.2022 The volume of scam calls recently has increased substantially, all of the phone numbers are spoofed/faked, so you may even see a local number come up on your phone. Always be cynical about interacting with cold callers. Read this great article linked below and go watch Jim Browning on youtube be a hero for the common man. https://www.nytimes.com//27/magazine/scam-call-centers.html

07.01.2022 I don't usually post stupid stuff here, but some days..... https://i.imgur.com/pcA8HXD.mp4

05.01.2022 There is a new scam in town, not literally in this town, but you get the drift. The new one is an eBay scam, the caller tells you one of your purchases has been compromised and you need to send money to catch the scammer. They refer you to a fake cyber crime number as well. I have a client with a locked laptop and a multi thousand dollar exposure. Talk to your mum, dad and grandparents, tell them to always be skeptical of anything unusual. Take a moment, call your bank before you engage, hell call me, I would rather talk to someone for 2 minutes than clean up the mess.

05.01.2022 Do yo have a brother printer, did it stop working recently? It's not you, or the printer that's broken, (insert Covid joke), Windows is at fault. There is a fix, follow this link below, or, you know, call your trusted Tech. https://www.brother.com.au//faq-windows-10-update-print-is

04.01.2022 it's a hot day, have a break, take this phishing test, I didn't get all of them, but I did learn a thing or 2. https://phishingquiz.withgoogle.com/ And make your parents take the test!!

04.01.2022 OK, i'm back after a jaunt to the tropics to blow out the dust*. Who left the Air-con pumping, it's kind of cold here? Now, you noticed the * up there, let's talk about keeping it clean. I see many computers that can be as new a 6 months old come in with heat or fan related issues. It's important to keep these things clean, I recommend all fans at least be given an inspection yearly, more often if they are environment. If you have a compressor and a desktop computer it's as easy as taking off the side cover and blow that dust out, if it's a laptop it requires more specialist care. Check out the not uncommon picture, WOW, how does it still work? This one didn't.

04.01.2022 Thanks everyone for the fantastic support. I look forward to supporting the Benalla community back with sound advice and quick communication. First up in what will be an ongoing dialogue of technical stuff. If something technical goes a bit wrong, behaves inconsistently, turn it off, pray and swear at it, turn it on again. It will fix heaps of small issues. If you just let your laptop or tablet just lapse into sleep mode, also once a week, just reboot it, it takes only a minute or 2. Until next time, happy computing!

03.01.2022 The NBN is here in Benalla for the lucky or not super lucky few, the less good fibre to the node is now active on the east side of town, the better fibre to the curb is coming a bit later. Check out the NBN rollout map link below to see where you are at. If you need advice or assistance I am only a phone call or email away. Welcome to the future peeps!! https://www.nbnco.com.au/residential/learn/rollout-map.html

01.01.2022 My new page to help the people of Benalla and surrounds to find technology solutions.

01.01.2022 Another day, another scam. Keep your cynic loaded. https://www.gizmodo.com.au//a-netflix-scam-is-going-aroun/

01.01.2022 There's nothing wrong with a cheap laptop, they are made for a good time not a long time. But, do not buy one with only 32GB of storage, it's not enough to load windows and do updates. A rebuild to make them useful, is not economic.
