24.01.2022 Yesterday the Wednesday/Thursday team went on an excursion to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens and the Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden. We were fortunate enough to escape the rain and have a great time exploring nature. Children engaged in experiences including digging for worms, planting seeds and harvesting vegetables. Children had the opportunity to capture their day in multiple ways including sketching and using a camera to photograph their experience. It was lovely to go beyond the Kindy and explore together. Thank you to all of the helpers who explored with us.

24.01.2022 Our kindy tea towels are a wonderful memento of your child’s time at Plympton South Kindy. Your order also supports our kindy’s fundraising efforts for the outdoor learning environment. Orders for Kindy tea towels close next Wednesday 28 October. Please pop your order in so we can estimate quantities required with the fundraiser. Thankyou!

14.01.2022 This week ‘Bugs ‘n’ Slugs’ bugged us at Kindy. They brought in a range of various types of bugs and insects that the children were able to observe and handle with care. The children were ‘entomologists’ as they investigated whether various types of insects were classified as crustaceans, arachnids or as insects. Chris explained that entomologists are required to prove which group the creepy crawlies belongs to by counting their legs. Children developed increasing knowledge, understanding and appreciation for living and non-living things as they explored. As well as meeting all of the creepy crawlies, we were lucky enough to meet Dolly Parton the chicken. It was great to learn more about chickens following on from our ‘Henny Penny Hatching’ visit in Term 3.

11.01.2022 The children have been noticing the birds in our local environment at kindy over many weeks. To support our ongoing inquiry, we have been making some bird seed feeders to place in our trees. One of our recipes involved mixing egg and bird seed together. We pressed the mixture into several silicone heart shaped moulds and also some terracotta pots lined with baking paper which had wire hangers inserted through them. The mixture was then baked in the oven. When we removed the pots and moulds from the oven, some of the the children commented that the bird seed feeders smelt like ‘honey’, ‘biscuit’ and one looked like a ‘big person love heart biscuit’ We have placed the bird seed feeders in some different trees around the kindy, including inside our bird house. We will keep watching to see what happens...

09.01.2022 The Wed/Thurs children have had a very busy few weeks at kindy with lots of learning about caring for our world and making connections with others in our community. In Week 6 we had a visit from Mr Baker, the Principal of St Anthony’s School Edwardstown and some of the Year 6 leaders to read some of their favourite stories with us as part of their celebrations for Book Week (which we will be celebrating at the revised dates in October). In Week 7 we commenced our Little Athl...etics Program which includes 3 sessions with a focus on running, jumping and throwing skills. In Week 8 we had a special delivery from Henny Penny Hatching and the children have had the wonderful opportunity to observe the chicks hatching from the eggs in the incubator and hold them once they are in the open pen. We also had a visit from Allison, the Education Officer at Marion Council to talk with the children about what happens to our rubbish/recycling/organics once they are collected by the garbage trucks. She was most impressed with the children’s prior knowledge as we have been inquiring and investigating all about this throughout the term. Many of the children have been eagerly checking to see how much food our worms are consuming each week and collecting our organics waste and sorting into ‘food for the worms’ and ‘green bin/compost waste’ The children were each given a sticker from the council for your green bins at home to encourage others in the community to also collect and deposit your organics waste in the green bin, as I’m sure your child will advise If it grows, it goes! Also, they have been actively sorting our rubbish into the 4 bin system (including collecting our soft plastics!) and were even involved in setting up the cubby as a ‘recycling depot’ last week. We hope this interest extends to helping you sort the recycling at home too! Don’t forget your boxes and clean plastic containers/lids can be repurposed for making at kindy and are always welcome. Do you recycle your soft plastics at your house, like we are at kindy?

06.01.2022 The children enjoyed the Amazing Drumming Monkeys Show today. The 2 monkey puppets, Bongo and Congo played the African drums and led us in singing and dancing. The Wed/Thursday children will have their turn next week!

05.01.2022 Look what‘s happening at Kindy today.. Here are some ideas to wonder and share together: I wonder what can you see? ... I wonder why this is this happening .. I wonder what will happen next... Enjoy your weekends

03.01.2022 We have had a busy start back to Term 4 with the children exploring numeracy concepts through pattern blocks, boards games, tinkering with old appliances and milo seeds (sorghum) in the large trough. It’s like popcorn - Angus It’s bird seed - Willa It’s a seed rain - Flippie... Last week we also celebrated Book Week with the theme Curious Creatures, Wild Minds. Children enjoyed reading stories that feature curious creatures (one of our favourites being The Gruffalo) and many brought in a favourite story to share from home. The children also showed amazing creativity and imagination by creating their very own ‘curious creature’ through collage, K’Nex construction and playdough. We read the shortlisted books for this year’s Book Week awards and children voted for their favourite. One Runaway Rabbit was the standout across both groups (although the official winner was My Friend Fred).

03.01.2022 On Tuesday the children continued with their interest in gardening by planting sunflower seeds that they had dried out from the beginning of the year. They got the garden beds prepared by turning over the soil, watering it and carefully chose spots to plant the sunflowers in. The children made sunflower signs to mark where they had planted. The Monday/Tuesday group often attend to the vegetables in the kindy garden, check on the flowers growing and water the plants when needed. They also used some of the worm juice on the vegetables to give them a boost from the worms we have have at kindy. Looking forward to observing the sunflowers grow in our garden.

01.01.2022 Here are a few photos taken by the Wednesday/Thursday children on our excursion. I wonder if they can remember who was the Photographer for each shot!
