Their courage and sacrifice lives on in memorial gardens, schools and civic spaces around Australia, thanks to Lance Corporal Benjamin Charles Smith. ... LCPL Smith collected several pine cones from the branches used to cover the Turkish trenches and sent them home to his mother in remembrance of his brother Mark, who had died in the fighting on 6 August. From one of these cones two seedlings were raised, with one being planted in Inverell and one on the ground of the Australian War Memorial. 13.01.2022 The RSL will be having a small indoor service on Tuesday the 18th August to pay our respects to the Veterans. Service begins at 10:45am for a 11:00am start, and will be limited to 60 people, with Covid restrictions. ------------------------------------------------------------- On 18 August, we commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. We remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who... served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War. On Vietnam Veterans Day, we pause and reflect on the bravery, teamwork and endurance that Australians displayed throughout the war. Its a day when we recognise all who served in Vietnam. We honour those veterans who: - lost their lives during battle - returned home wounded, ill or injured - lost their lives in the years since they returned - still carry the physical and emotional scars of their service We also pause to reflect on the impact of service on our veterans families.

11.01.2022 On this day... in 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped by the United States on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. The bomb was dropped by a B-29 Superfortress bomber nam...ed "Enola Gay", initiating a firestorm across the city. On that day and during the year following, up to 140,000 were killed or died as a result of the bombing, almost all of them civilians. The bombing of Hiroshima was the first use of nuclear weapons against a city. Regrettably, late in the afternoon, we had to close our doors to comply with SA Govt directives, in particular, crowd numbers and capacity. 01.01.2022 Many thanks to the generous people who donated to our Xmas appeal. We have donated $1000 dollars to the Andrew Russell Veteran Living organisation, who assist with emergency housing and accommodation for veterans in need. We also donated a large quantity of food items that will go to families in need. The RSL have also donated $1000 to the Plympton veterans centre who help veterans with advocacy. Our heartfelt thanks to the community who have donated and continue to support our club.
