05.01.2022 #MMRetrospect A Museum for the 21st Century Melbourne Museum officially opened to the public (in Carlton Gardens) on this day 15 years ago. However buildings ...like this don’t just happen overnight. In 1994 a competition was held to find the best design for a new Museum for Melbourne. It attracted 109 entries from Australia and overseas but was won by Melbourne based architects Denton Corker Marshall. Melbourne museum was designed as a complex of distinct parts rather than a single monumental Museum with a grid (Hoddles grid) sitting over the entire complex. In contrast to museums of the past, staff areas are clearly visible to the public through the glazed southern façade of the building, small viewing windows and glazed walkways inside. It took about 4 years for the states priceless collection of more than 16 million objects to be relocated from earlier site (now the State Library of Victoria) to the new Museum in Carlton Gardens and Coburg storage facility. Approximately 2 thirds of the collection is housed at Melbourne Museum which stands as the largest museum complex in the Southern Hemisphere.
