22.01.2022 Turf toe is an injury we see more often with football and soccer players over the winter months. It affects the big toe joint when it is forcibly bent upwards into hyperextension, usually when pushing off to sprint or collision with another player. This injury affects the soft tissue structures around the joint and can vary in severity from a good stretch to even total dislocation. These structures are really important for the stability, strength and normal functioning... of the joint. The gradings are from mild to severe: Grade 1 - the plantar complex is stretches causing some swelling and tenderness Grade 2 - partial tearing of the plantar complex causing limited and painful movement of the joint Grade 3 - there is a full tear causing severe swelling, bruising and pain with difficulty moving the toe. Treatment varies on the severity of the injury, but commonly a period of immobilisation is important to reduce symptoms and load through the area. Strength and mobility rehabilitation is really important in preventing joint stiffness and reducing long term loss of function also!
