25.01.2022 An interesting read about the dangers of taking Lyrica for pain. Exercise is an effective and much safer means by which to deal with long standing pain issues. Podium Physio can help clients by providing home exercise rehabilitation programs, gym based programs, or even better - supervised gym programs at our nearby gym Karmony. https://www.abc.net.au//lyrica-pbs-drug-linked-to/11921882
24.01.2022 Nice to see so many smiling cyclists at Norton Summit this morning. Particular welcome to all the interstate guests. Glad you could make it! If you see yourself or someone you know in these happy snaps please tag away! Hope you enjoyed your jelly beans.
24.01.2022 Very excited and privileged to be interviewed this week for Amanda Hayes' Wellbeing Podcast. We had a great chat about my physio background, recent Masters study, Track and Field career and more recent conversion to a MAMIL! The episode will be aired early next week and I'll share a link to my facebook pages and website when it is live. Thanks Amanda Hayes for the opportunity! https://podcasts.apple.com//amandas-wellbeing/id1455017772
24.01.2022 Just a short note to let you know that Podium Physio is still open for consultations, in keeping with the recommendations of the Federal Health Minister. Appointments are being spaced out to reduce waiting room interaction between clients, and of course strict hygiene measures are in full effect. Podium is also able to provide telehealth consultations (on-line appointments) which have been reported as extremely effective in dealing with pain, injury and dysfunction. Please make contact if you would like to discuss appointment options. https://www.facebook.com/AustralianPhysiotherapyAssociation/posts/3080289715328370?hc_location=ufi

21.01.2022 My New Year's Resolution? To put on my warpaint and armour every day and adopt the champion's mindset. For the last 6 months I've been listening to the Jim Kwik podcast #kwikbrain . Jim is an expert in improving mental function, particularly memory and reading speed + comprehension. His podcasts also recruit masters in excellence across a variety of fields. This podcast with Dr. Jeff Spencer discusses the choice we have every day: to submit to our fear based survival instinc...t to stay the safe path, or to adopt the champion's mindset to step forward with the best version of ourselves, to act in spite of the fear and accept the risk of failure. I found this to be a very powerful 10 minute listen, and a discussion which resonated with my scientific brain, as it explains this concept in basic biological terms. I highly recommend the whole series, and this chapter in particular. A great note to start the New Year on! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kyJ7MYQVd0 See more

21.01.2022 Day 3 Pain Revolution Tour. Ready to roll!
20.01.2022 Do you read the DCRainmaker Sports Tech updates? During the 2020 Tour Down Under I bumped into Ray Maker, also known as "DC Rainmaker" who produces a comprehensive website and social media sports technology blog. No one knows more about technology for endurance sports than Ray. He was casually sniffing around the pro team bikes, holding up a long selfie stick and recording a Vlog post. I politely waited for him to draw breath then paparazzid him for a selfie of my own. If you are a cyclist or endurance athlete, do yourself a favour and check out his website at https://www.dcrainmaker.com/ DC Rainmaker

17.01.2022 One month ago I was invited to be a guest on Amanda's Wellbeing Podcast. Amanda Hayes has a background in nutrition and is also a keen cyclist/ triathlete. 13.01.2022 In 1998 I ruptured my right ACL on a snowboarding trip. A pre-eminent knee surgeon here in Adelaide told me I would need a reconstruction, or face early osteoarthritis and meniscal damage. Forward 22 years and without surgery, my knee feels great and Im glad to have followed a different path, focussing on a quality rehabilitation program of strength, stability and mobility. I agree with the doctor interviewed that an ACL tear generally does not need a reconstruction. Good physio and exercise is a better option. https://www.abc.net.au//why-surgery-might-not-be-/12286962
13.01.2022 I try to include discussions on diet, sleep, stress and general activity levels with all of my clients. Sometimes simple changes make the biggest impact.
13.01.2022 Ive long been an advocate of cyclists doing weight training to assist their performance and reduce injuries on the bike, however more and more evidence shows that we need to supplement cycling with high impact and/ or high resistance exercise to protect our bone mineral density and avoid osteoporosis. https://road.cc//how-stop-cycling-making-your-bones-brittl

11.01.2022 At least 25% of cyclists complain of knee pain as a result of their sport. This page from my recently updated website outlines the 3 most common causes of cycling knee pain, and some simple remedies that work for many. http://podiumphysio.com.au/cycling-physio/cycling-knee-pain
11.01.2022 Day 2 Pain Revolution Rural Outreach Tour. Its starting to get a bit hairy!
11.01.2022 One of the "professional" shots from the Pain Revolution Rural Outreach tour, which concluded on March 15 just prior to COVID 19 taking hold. Very fortunate timing for our group to be able to finish the 860 km ride, along with the public and practitioner education sessions in several Victorian Towns. Looking forward to next year already!
10.01.2022 Pickle Juice for Muscle Cramps? Magnesium? Muscle cramps are a common problem for cyclists and other endurance athletes. This excellent episode of the "Fuel the Pedal" podcast with Dr Kevin Miller, discusses the misconceptions about the causes of and fixes for muscle cramps. In summary: Dehydration and loss of electrolytes (body salts) is NOT a primary cause of cramps. In experiments where athletes exercised to high levels of dehydration, they had NO increase in rate of cram...ps. In fact there is evidence that the nerves to muscles become LESS excitable with dehydration, therefore less likely to result in cramps. More specifically there is LITTLE SUPPORT for the idea of MAGNESIUM supplementation, as the amount of magnesium lost in sweat during endurance activity is minimal. Dehydration may have an indirect contribution to cramping though, via its association with fatigue. The "Altered Neuromuscular Control Theory" which has a greater weight of evidence behind it, simply shows that exercise induced fatigue causes increased relative demand on the neuromuscular system and cramps due to nerve over-excitation. Pickle juice has long been used by athletes to stave of cramps, and research now supports its effectiveness. It has been shown to be effective within 90 seconds of ingestion, which means it is likely to work via a neurological mechanism (not via digestion which would take much longer). Dr Miller believes that the vinegar in the pickle juice brine acts as a counterirritant in the mouth and immediately disrupts the over-excitation of the central nervous system. In the recommended quantities (80 - 100 mls), there have been no negative side-effects shown to taking pickle juice. Dr Miller summarises his research by suggesting that the causes of cramping is likely to be different for every individual, and the best method for combating cramps is to keep a "cramp diary" to try to find common patterns/ contributing factors (such as poor sleep/ foods eaten prior/ temperature/ mental state etc) and target each one identified with specific interventions. 06.01.2022 Need a physio appointment but prefer/ need to stay at home at the moment due to the COVID 19 situation? Telehealth (on-line) physio consultations are now available at Podium Physio and becoming increasingly popular. On-line physio appointments are proven to be just as effective as traditional appointments, because of the emphasis on self management strategies, which are the cornerstone of all of our successful treatment programs. How does it work? Telehealth appointments ...can be booked on line at podiumphysio.com.au or arranged via a phone call. You will need a computer with a camera, or you can use your phone or tablet. You will be sent a link which will open up the video call screen on your device, and the appointment will start. The appointment will cover all facets of a normal physio appointment: - Subjective Assessment (discussion) - Objective Assessment (watching your movements, testing musculoskeletal structures and palpating for sore areas) - Diagnosis (from the provided information) - Education regarding your prognosis and options for management -Self treatment methods (in lieu of hands on treatment from the physio) - Ongoing management plan including rehab exercises to get you back to your best as quickly as possible The beauty of working on-line and with modern technology is that we no longer need to be constrained to standard appointment paradigms, but can continue to work together via SMS, emails, chat programs, phone or video. You will be surprised how effective this actually is. For private clients, telehealth appointments are paid for electronically at the time of booking, and an invoice will be provided for you to submit to your health fund. There is a growing list of private health funds who have agreed to provide rebates for telehealth appointments, including BUPA, Health Partners, Australian Unity and Teachers Health. Telehealth appointments are also now available for clients under RTWSA (WorkCover), DVA and Medicare See more

02.01.2022 Met some new friends today at my pop-up Norton Summit Refreshment Stand. Thanks to everyone that stopped to say hi, including some faces I havent seen for a few years! Handed out over 3kg of jelly beans, and plenty of water and electrolyte. Hopefully the physio service $25 discount vouchers that I handed out are useful for some of yall. Will be back there tomorrow morning (Sunday 12th Jan)!
01.01.2022 So it appears that coffee and napping combine for superior alertness and performance. What an awesome combination! https://www.vox.com///6074177/coffee-naps-caffeine-science
01.01.2022 The majority of our kids have no sport competition on at the moment, and no training sessions either. Maintaining their fitness and conditioning over the coming months will certainly be tricky, but if not handled well, will predispose these kids to injury when they suddenly get back into sport later this year. One great option is weight training. Like many people, I grew up under the false impression that weight training as a teenager would "stunt your growth" and lead to mu...sculoskeletal problems later on. However there is no evidence to support this, and current advice is that weight training is a safe, beneficial and useful form of exercise / conditioning for children, when conducted as a supervised and graduated program. Let me know if you have any questions about how to get your kids started, or continuing with resistance training at home (hint - you will want to get some basic equipment, and soon!) https://www.physio-network.com/weight-training-stunts-gro/ See more
01.01.2022 Elective Surgery Cancelled! If you now have to wait for elective surgery on your knee, hip or other painful joint due to COVID-19, dont despair as there is an alternative pathway to pain relief. You may be surprised to learn that a well-constructed, graduated exercise program is often MORE EFFECTIVE at relieving pain and stiffness from worn joints, damaged cartilage and inflamed soft tissues than surgery. Exercise programs for hip and knee arthritis have recently been shown ...to reduce pain so significantly that many participants no longer needed to proceed with surgery! And even while the gyms are closed, these exercise programs can be easily set up in the home environment with some simple equipment such as resistance band, exercise balls and small weights. And if you are unable to, or uncomfortable about coming in for a physio appointment to set up your program, this can now be conducted on-line via a video appointment, with step by step instructions and clear exercise videos sent straight to your phone or computer. Even if you decide to go ahead with your surgery at a later date, your recovery will be quicker and easier if you have already started exercise rehabilitation. Contact Podium Physio to find out more about the options available. See more
01.01.2022 If you see a devilishly handsome (and humble) physio standing at Norton Summit tomorrow morning (Fri 22nd Jan), come over and say hi to score yourself a bag of jellybeans and a $50 voucher redeemable for bike fit services at Podium Physio. Please feel free to forward this post or tag a friend who might be interested in this discount.
