25.01.2022 How are you keeping track on track? I always find exercise easier to complete when I have a clear goal in mind. This might be to cover a certain distance in a particular time, or it may simply be to complete a number of steps in a day. Whatever the goal is having an app that allows me to track my progress is a must. What are your favourite fitness related apps? Let me know below

24.01.2022 The calf pump, AKA our Peripheral Heart ensures a rapid venous return to our main heart during exercise. Pumping the blood back to the heart via the veins to receive oxygen, so it can go again and again, is a very important job of our calf muscle. Pressure will build distally in our veins if the blood is not successfully being pushed back up. This is the simple explanation of why varicose or/and spider veins and ankle/foot swelling may exist. Sitting, standing in one spot and excess weight are just some examples of what can make it difficult for the blood to flow through the veins. Stagnant blood can lead on to many different complications. Daily, challenging exercise is recommended to keep all our systems working efficiently. When you’re exercising think about what you could be doing to take advantage of that calf pump!

23.01.2022 How long do orthotics last? At Podmed Podiatry we believe your orthotic devices should last as long as possible. On average 3-4 years for moderate to high intensity activities. 2-3 years for high to intense levels of exercise. Its important that your orthotic devices last. Why? Because the the investment youve made in your orthotic devices should be matched by the investment we make in the most up to date design process, our expertise and selecting only the highest quality materials available to produce world class orthotic devices that last.

23.01.2022 Following 3 weeks of rest and recovery- including some treatment from the team at PodMED, Rob is finally back up and running!! A great way to get back into running after an injury break is interval running. It gives your body a chance to adjust to the loads associated with running in a safer environment. Ladder runs are a great form of interval training- it involves distances of running with periods of recovery (walking or jogging) between each effort. Using the lines drawn ...on a football or soccer field can be a great set-up option- think about working your way up the ladder via the lines marked on the field. The breakdown of Robs first session back was; - 10 minute warm up/ stretching - 5 x 15 m runs (with equal distance recovery walk back to starting line) - 5 x 25m + recovery walks - 5 x 45m + recovery walks - 5 x 60m + recovery walks -5 x 85m + recovery walks -15 min walk home Take care and remember if you are returning to activity following an injury- the leading cause of sustaining a new injury is inadequate recovery from a previous one! Stay safe and happy running

21.01.2022 Soleus is the most important muscle in the lower part of the limb. It works hard to resist up to 4 times the body weight in rotational forces during movement . Soleus plays a massive part in creating power at the ankle joint and helps to support the knee joint by decelerating forward momentum of the tibia. Try this stretch daily. Twice, if you’re really channeling some self love! Lets look at strengthening soon! Watch this space.

20.01.2022 Can you cut my fingernails?!

20.01.2022 A nice stretch to end your workout for that big powerful calf muscle Gastrocnemius! This guy works hard to propel you through the gait cycle, so show him some love. 6 x 30 second stretch on both legs a day might just keep the doctor away

19.01.2022 So, what is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, otherwise known as shin splints Periostitis. Medial Tibial Traction Periostitis to be precise! This refers to inflammation at the periosteum, occurring where a tendon and muscle attaches to the bone. This can be due to either Tibialis Posterior, Flexor Digitorum Longus and Soleus. It is important to figure out what is contributing to your unique discomfort through thorough assessment with a Podiatrist. Everyone is different! Lets keep those feet and legs healthy

18.01.2022 Another nifty exercise for the intrinsic foot muscle series! Laying a towel out and bringing in it with your toes, helps strengthen the many wonderful and important muscles we have within our foot. Dont forget about these muscles! They play a huge role in the way our foot functions and are crucial to it functioning well.

17.01.2022 Orthotics didnt work or just plain hurt you? Somethings not right. If youre having trouble with the consistency in your orthotic devices, their comfort or wear....you shouldnt be. To get the most out of your orthotic devices:... 1-Select a Podiatrist with a proven track record. 2-Ask your qualified Podiatrist about the quality & lifespan of the orthotic materials being used. A good operator will easily be able to answer these questions. 3-Ensure your Podiatrist books annual maintenance to tidy and keep you and your orthotics in great shape to make sure your orthotics last. 4-Modern design techniques allow for accurate storage and adjustment to your designs. Many of our patients are so happy with the orthotic work we do for them that they order additional pairs. *Additional or replacement pairs should always be accurate AND represent a cost saving for the patient.

15.01.2022 Something that I have been presented with a lot lately is patients who have purchased footwear on the internet that just does not quite fit or feels different from my last pair. At this time when exercise is so important (it always is- we are just placing more emphasis on it now) footwear is the most important piece of equipment we can purchase. It is the one thing that is between our body and the surface we are walking, running or jumping on. It will have a huge impact o...n our bodies ability to perform and avoid injury! (And yes it can be expensive) The advice I give to all my clients- ask us what footwear is going to suit you best- and then head into a trusted shoe store to ensure you are fitted correctly. We work closely with both The Athletes Foot- Bondi junction & The Sydney Running Centre to ensure our clients get the most out of their footwear. Try and avoid ordering over the internet if possible- your feet and footwear needs change all the time- you might not always know what you are paying for! - Rob Parish See more

15.01.2022 Avoiding Ingrown toe nails At Podmed Podiatry we are often asked how to cut toenails properly in order to avoid developing ingrown toenails. STEP ONE... A good set of toenail clippers are essential. We prefer clippers over nail scissors because theyre safer and its easier to do a good job. STEP TWO Cut the nail straight across removing the white free nail edge only. Dont cut too close to the skin AND most importantly dont cut down the sides where you cant see what youre trimming. Cutting down the sides of the nail is one of the most common nail cutting mistakes there is. STEP THREE File any chips or sharp edges with a nail file or emery board. Never pick at your nails. Pickers cause more serious ingrown toenails every year than any other group. If youre having trouble cutting your toenails properly you are not alone. Remember choose the right tools, make sure you only trim what you can clearly see and whatever you do, dont be a picker.

14.01.2022 A lot can be told about your health from your feet! We know how important it is here at PodMed to have a regular foot health check. The skin, nails, vascular system, musculoskeletal system and nervous system of the feet can have a lot to say . Its hard to know what to look for or how to know if something is normal or not.

14.01.2022 Calf injuries- This week our Podiatrist Rob suffered a running injury- managing to tear his calf while on his Monday morning run. He should have been listening to all that advice he has given to his patients over the last few months Stay tuned for updates on his recovery that will include some helpful tips on how you might handle similar issues (hopefully your lucky enough to avoid them)

13.01.2022 When is it time you replace my shoes? A common question we get in clinic is when should I replace my athletic footwear? The answer to this isnt always simple- different people will wear out their footwear at different rates. It is dependent on many factors including your body type, gait patterns, type of shoe and activity. ... 3 things that we tell our patients to look out for when assessing their footwear are; 1) extreme outer sole wear (like pic 2) 2) a soft or warped heel 3) shoes that no longer sit straight when on a flat surface If you think it might be time to replace your footwear an appointment with your podiatrist may be whats needed to ensure you get the best fit for you and your foot

13.01.2022 Yes we know its Wednesday today!, but after higher demand this week, to help you get an earlier appointment with us, and, still maintaining the distancing regulations we will be opening the clinic some Monday mornings for the time being. Call, email or book online for an appointment.

13.01.2022 KISSING TOES This is a great way to teach your great toes how to start functioning in ways that theyre designed for! Just like any other joint in your body, it is important to strengthen the muscles surrounding it. Adductor Hallucis and Abductor Hallucis are activated during this exercise. Strengthening the muscles in your feet can help prevent pathology such as Hallux Abducto Valgus, otherwise known as Bunions.

12.01.2022 How are you staying active this weekend? Its one of the few reasons we are able to get out of the house over the long weekend. Walk, run or ride it doesnt really matter- its all about getting moving and feeling good! Happy Easter!

12.01.2022 Gout is commonly seen in the feet! Most commonly affecting the big toe joint. Gout is an inflammatory arthritis that results from hyperuricemia (an increase and imbalance of uric acid in the body). Gout can manifest in many different and interesting ways. It is important to address gout and not just wait for it to go away and hope it doesnt come back again. Due to gout being a form of arthritis it does have irreversible effects on joints, therefore it always pays to stay proactive.

10.01.2022 Today at PodMED we were treated with a visit from the team at Befit Training Physiotherapy @befit.physio. We are always looking for opportunities to form relationships with complementary health practitioners to enhance our clients outcomes! @ PodMed Podiatry Centre

08.01.2022 Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome One of the most common explanations for sore knees! anterior knee pain around the patella pain is due to the patella being pulled laterally usually due to the weakness of VMO (vastus medialis oblique) the Patella no longer sits comfortably in its home (the trochlea) usually an insidious onset ... Stay tuned....

08.01.2022 A common concern we often hear from people is My feet are so dry, cracked and sore! How can we fix it!?" Apart from the treatment we give to our patients here in clinic, a little bit of homework will go a long way! Using a heel balm with the ingredient Urea in it can be a really powerful modality for getting those feet silky smooth. Next time youre in, ask us which would be the best for you, as theyre not all the same, and everyones feet need something a little different.

08.01.2022 So much going on in this fascinating part of the body! They do so much for us. They are the foundation. Whats going on in yours..

07.01.2022 Thanks again Athletes Foot, Bondi Junction! We had a fun little time bringing our patients through to help find the perfect pair of new shoes Great team we made!

06.01.2022 Its one of the leading causes of injury amongst runners- patella femoral pain- your running form or style may be having an impact on the forces going through the knee. Studies have shown one contributing factor is a heavy rear foot strike pattern and increased knee flexion angle. If this sounds like you it might be time to have a running assessment to determine whats contributing to your knee pain. All our Podiatrist preform running assessments to ensure you are kept injury free and enjoying your running!

05.01.2022 Tibialis Posterior is a very important muscle that lays in the deep group of muscles belonging to the posterior compartment of the lower leg. (A deep muscle originating from within the calf). It inserts into NINE different spots within the foot! This power house you may not have heard of before is crucial for the inversion and plantar-flexion of the foot. This muscle supports the medial longitudinal arch of the foot. Maintaining strength in this muscle is important for all types of gait, stability and the structural integrity of the foot itself. This exercise requires a simple heel raise, adding a ball between the heels. At the top SQUEEEEEZE that ball to engage Tibialis Posterior. exercise too!

04.01.2022 Did you know- low grade (minor) ankle joint injuries have a higher rate of re-injury than high grade ruptures? Yes this means that the ankle sprain you sustained while on your weekend walk or sporting activity, that may settled rather quickly is at greater risk of reinjury than someone who has fully ruptured the lateral ligaments.... Why?? Well there a few factors at play- mainly our efforts towards strength and rehabilitation following the incident. What does this mean? It means that no matter how severe the injury is our approach to rehabilitation is the same. 1) Identify causative factors 2) offload to allow healing 3) improve the tissues capacity to accept load (and dont stop)

04.01.2022 Ooo this is a tricky one! Another exercise to get those feet moving and behaving the way they should! Tag us if you can do any better . Strengthening the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the feet is important for stability and biomechanics during all types of gait Just like any other muscles in the body, the ones in our feet have to be strengthened and taught how to work in the most efficient way. GOODLUCK!

04.01.2022 Our receptionist Claire made the most of her Monday off work enjoying a long walk in Blue Mountains National Park. We hope you all had a wonderful long weekend doing what you enjoy most.

03.01.2022 A great infographic I stumbled across this evening explaining what NOT to do if you are suffering from lower limb tendon pain. Our Podiatrists are experts in identifying the factors contributing to your lower limb pain. We then work with you to plan your rehabilitation- getting you back doing what you love in the quickest and safest way possible.

03.01.2022 Medial knee pain? One cause of this can be due to damage of the meniscus. The medial meniscus is most commonly injured in conjunction with the medial collateral ligament as a result of sheer stress. This stress can come from excessive knee flexion, external rotation and detrimental compression. If direct trauma has not been experienced its important to understand why the knee is experiencing this, in order to change it! Mild or severe tears to the meniscus are treated differently so it is important to receive a correct diagnosis.

03.01.2022 Congratulations to our 10 wonderful and winning patients! Winners have been contacted about their $200 voucher for @tafbondi . Stay tuned for future competitions!

01.01.2022 Plenty of components to consider in the posterior complex of the leg when thinking about the way the foot functions. Stay tuned for another handy stretch! This one will be particularly helpful for our ...
