15.01.2022 January 2. Happy new year poets and poetry lovers. I’m out bush so have little reception but as this is a once in a year opportunity to choose a word for the year I’m making the effort to post. I’m sitting in my car in the gentle rain with the cicadas making quite the soundtrack. I’m in the trees and feeling it. Last year I chose TIME as my word for 2020 and never was there a year where time felt so elastic. It was a year of grit. This year I have meditated on the word during... a water ritual with friends. GRACE is my word for 2021. I am as yet to look it up in the dictionary but from what I already know and how this word resonates in my being I’m taking it on. What’s yours? 13.01.2022 It's our 3rd birthday! Yes! And to celebrate as big as we can in these days of distance we are bringing the world closer. I am thrilled to introduce US based poet Raina León to Poetica who will be zooming in to share her words. . Raina J. León, PhD is a Black and Afro-Boricua Philadelphian (living for many years in the Chochenyo Ohlone territory of Berkeley). She is a mother, daughter, sister, madrina, comadre, partner, poet, writer, and teacher educator. She believes in co...llective action and community work, the profound power of holding space for the telling of our stories, and the liberatory practice of humanizing education. She seeks out communities of care and craft and is a member of the Carolina African American Writers Collective, Cave Canem, CantoMundo, Macondo. She is the author of three collections of poetry, Canticle of Idols, Boogeyman Dawn and sombra: dis(locate) and the chapbooks, profeta without refuge and Areyto to Atabey: Essays on the Mother(ing) Self. Her poetry, nonfiction, fiction, and scholarly work has been published in well over 100 journals and anthologies. She has received fellowships and residencies with the Community of Writers, Montana Artists Refuge, Macdowell, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, Vermont Studio Center, the Tyrone Guthrie Center in Annamaghkerrig, Ireland and Ragdale, among others. She is a member of the SF Writers Grotto and The Ruby in San Francisco. She also is a founding editor of The Acentos Review, an online quarterly, international journal devoted to the promotion and publication of Latinx arts, and the Senior Poetry editor for Raising Mothers, a journal devoted to writing from BIPOC femme-identified and non-binary parents. She educates our present and future agitators/educators as a full professor of education at Saint Mary’s College of California, only the third Black person (all Black women) and the first Afro-Latina to achieve that rank there, and as a creative arts practitioner and co-learner holding space in various communities. . 05.01.2022 Last night we turned 3 ... another fantastic night of words and community. Poets tuned in from Canada, California and a quarantine hotel. Definitely a night of firsts. And of course all the other places including a few of us who were able to stream live together from @gertrudeandalice . We sat distanced but very much together with the communal sounds of snapping and laughter a welcome relief for all - those in the zoom room too. Huge gratitude to @rainaleon our divine feature... poet who zoomed in at 2am Cali time to open the night and share her exquisite poetry. We hope you will join us again.
