24.01.2022 This month, Austroads released an issues paper examining the contribution of both Australia and New Zealand’s road transport sector to their total greenhouse gas emissions. The paper outlines the need for the decarbonisation of the industry to work toward the 2050 net zero emissions target set across jurisdictions in both nations. Without action, meeting this target will be unattainable, as the road sector accounts for approximately 14% of Australian greenhouse gas emissions.... The transition to electric vehicles is at the forefront of the papers discussions as to how best to work towards this goal. Such initiatives will not only assist in reducing emissions, but are likely to bring about additional health benefits, create more active travel modes, and generate broader economic benefits for the community. For further details you can access the full issues paper via the link below. https://austroads.com.au//decarbonising-australian-and-new

23.01.2022 Tomorrow is ANZAC Day. While there won’t be any parades and marches this year, we’d like to acknowledge the brave men and women who fought for, and continue to serve the country by helping in the fight against challenges like bushfires and pandemics. Lest We Forget.

21.01.2022 The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted Australia’s ongoing reliance on road-based freight. One-third of Australia’s freight tonne-kilometres are carried by trucks - however for retail, grocery and dry goods this proportion is much higher. Freight companies are working overtime to meet the demand at supermarkets and retailers as shoppers flock to stock their pantries. Shortages are due to the systems inability to distribute goods fast enough, not a shortage in supply. Delivery ...curfews around the nation are being relaxed, but the freight-goods workforce is being tested by the sheer volume and distance over which goods must be transported. In the long term, new technology such as autonomous trucking and drone-based (direct from warehouse) delivery will improve the freight capacity and scalability within Australia. In the mean-time, we suggest people just buy less toilet paper!

20.01.2022 The City of Melbourne has announced a plan for hundreds of on-street car parking spaces to be removed over the next two years to accommodate 40km of new bicycle lanes being fast-tracked across the city. This decision comes following a significant increase of up to 300% more people cycling into the city during the COVID-19 pandemic. The upgrade will occur in two stages with the first 20km delivered in 2020-21 costing $16 million.

16.01.2022 A South African company hopes to help the country tackle its waste problem and improve road quality by using plastic bottles in asphalt. The company expects that these roads will be built to last longer than the South African average road lifespan of 20 years. However, emissions from the production process and release of micro-plastics into the roadside atmosphere are issues that may limit the use of this technology. 14.01.2022 Beginning in August, the Department of Transport and Main Roads will start works on a 7.3 km section of the Bruce Highway at Bambaroo, 90km north of Townsville. The $29.3 million dollar safety package is part of approximately $140 million in investment towards major upgrades of the Bruce Highway between Townsville and Ingham. These works are targeted to improve highway safety concerns by providing wider lanes, improved visibility and access, better overtaking opportunities, and reduced risk of head-on collisions for motorists. http://statements.qld.gov.au//29-million-for-bruce-highway

13.01.2022 As COVID-19 restrictions ease and people begin commuting to work again, the next big challenge for governments is how to manage concerns and regulations on social distancing for commuters returning to workplaces who need public transport. Applying the four-square-metres per person rule that has been applied to workplaces would make public transport unviable for most services. Scaling up the transport network fleet to meet demand while maintaining social distancing is also unl...ikely to be a practical option. Presently, state governments are encouraging businesses to continue working from home where possible, bring back employees in stages, and stagger start times to spread the load across peak times to minimize patronage on buses, trains and ferries. Due to the reduced public transport capacity and reluctance many people are likely to have about being exposed to large groups, a spike in demand for passenger car trips is likely to accompany the widescale return to work, which could mean that in the near future many cities will experience even longer peak hour periods than before the pandemic. https://www.abc.net.au//public-transport-usage-du/12246518

07.01.2022 Myth Busted: A common argument is that electric vehicles will not significantly reduce carbon emissions until their electricity source is produced from a renewable source. A recent study has considered the whole-of-life emissions from electric vehicles (EVs), from the extraction of fossil fuels, manufacturing, operations and end of life emissions. It found that on average, for 95% of the road transport demand, current EVs have lower life-cycle emission intensities in comparison to a comparable new petrol vehicle. It is encouraging to know that future improvements to EV efficiency and conversion to renewable energy sources will only improve on what is already a generally lower carbon alternative to travel. 05.01.2022 As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, traffic and transport have been required to adapt to the unique situation. Although many jobs allow employees to work from home, there is still essential service personnel that require travel to and from work. Ridesharing companies in cities such as Berlin, Malta and New Zealand have taken on the challenge and are helping to optimize transportation and resources. With sound traffic management and strategic planning, ridesharing companies will play a significant role in helping the world return to a state of normality following COVID-19. https://www.forbes.com//how-one-mobility-innovator-is-su/

02.01.2022 As we move towards a greener future and electric vehicle (EV) technology advances, the demand for EVs is beginning to out-pace the production rate of batteries that power them. While manufacturing capacity can be easily solved, the scarcity of cobalt (a key component of EV battery technology) will affect production rates. Due to this reason and the fact that it is one of the most expensive metals in EV batteries, Tesla previously pledged to remove cobalt from its batteries. However, the problem of battery capacity and EV travel distance will be an issue that needs to be addressed, which is particularly important in Australia where reliability to travel over long distances will be vital in encouraging uptake of EVs.
