25.01.2022 From the wet forest of the Upper Kangaroo Valley, to the torched landscape around the Tallowa Dam; you wouldn't think they were neighbours. Walking down the Kangaroo River Firetrail, we were in silence. While the devastation was moving, you couldn't help but still notice the strength in the country.

23.01.2022 One of the categories for our Point & Shoot - Tasmanian Veterans & First Responder Photography Exhibition is the Career Shot. This category will be a display of Tasmanian’s Veterans and First Responder’s photos from their career/work serving their country or community. Photos for First Responders will most likely be taken in Tasmania, but our Veteran pictures might come from anywhere they have served, Tasmania, Australia or on overseas deployment. We have only just been ...introduced to Warren Frey and we are pleased to be getting to know him. This photo is one of his. His operational photography as a member of the Tasmania Fire Service is exceptional. We are looking forward to displaying more of his work and others who can take us to the front lines. We want to see awesome shots of Tasmanians doing great things! Please, If you are a Tasmanian First Responder or Military Veteran we want to hear from you and learn your story. If you send us career shots, photographers should take care to have the photo approved by the organisation in which they belong. *Career Shot will not be open for judging, and no prizes to be awarded. *Career Shot will exhibit to the public and must be suitable for all ages. #PointAssist #pointandshoottas

22.01.2022 Getting ready for our Veterans and First Responders Photographic Expo in Hobart on the 30th and 31st of this month and we are getting some great images coming in from talented Tasmanians. Check this one out, Reflections on the Gordon River Graham took this photo of an old loggers camp on the West Coast. A former military medic, now working for Ambulance Tasmania as a Paramedic, we thank you for your service to our community Graham. We hope you choose to continue your impor...tant work looking after Tasmanians health and we also hope to see more great photographs like this one. You clearly know how to use your Canon 5D mk3 well. #pointassist #pointandshootTas
21.01.2022 Photos from day two of our trek on the second Veteran Active Recreation Program in Tasmania. It was up and over from Wineglass Bay to Cooks Beach as the team explored 17km's of the Freycinet Peninsula and the summit of Mt Freycinet. #pointassist #experience #veteran #tasmania
19.01.2022 At Point Assist we are about experience and life-changing events. Our purpose is assisting people to do great things and we are passionate about changing people’s lives for the better. That’s why this feedback is so moving for us. After getting a social media notice this morning, a reminder of a past event, we forwarded it on. This was the reply we got. That was a good day!!! I actually achieved a life long ambition that day and almost cried. Can never thank you enough for ...that. Walking into a temple at Angkor and having five minutes alone in an ancient monument and feeling of connection to past, present and future, seeing the wall reaching up to the dawn sky. It really is a memory I return to over and over Client, now friend. #pointassist

19.01.2022 Looking through some pictures from the VARP a few weeks ago. Here are a few from Day 2 of the hike summiting Nevada Peak and Snowy South 1398m.
18.01.2022 Awesome pictures by Jo. Its great to be working with her on this project.
17.01.2022 We must all either wear out or rust out, every one of us. My choice is to wear out. Theodore Roosevelt. But I'm not sure my our Landcruiser Wagon is going to do either. It's still going strong.
16.01.2022 I spent the last 25 years working in teams that had a culture of getting on with the job and not seeking recognition for it. My world was based on fact and things like my opinion, unless it related to work, was not encouraged to be shared. Actuality, we were fined by our colleagues for getting our head in the paper or on TV. Therefore, it’s no surprise I am uncomfortable in this situation. My whole adult life I have been told I have no place being there. I’m nervous I will l...ook stupid, say the wrong thing, or just simply upset people with my opinion. But through experience I know, it’s the environments where we are uncomfortable that we develop the most. Bruce Lee even summed it up in my favorite quote. Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one. Because Bruce knew it’s the difficult one that helps us live to our full potential. Too continue improving until we take a wrong turn or time catches up with us. Over the last few weeks I have had many people tell me that they cant enter my photographic competition because their photos aren’t good enough. I’m here to tell you they are good enough and that it’s the bad photos that will make you better. As an information and reconnaissance expert in the military, I was berated many times by my superiors because my imagery just wasn’t quite good enough. It didn’t have enough detail or wasn’t clear. Hiding in the jungle or sitting on a mountain several kilometers away makes it hard to get good photos; but because I kept submitting pictures in my reports, I got better. Now I think I am bad at talking to cameras. I am nervous and have an irrational fear that I will look stupid. I also know I have overcome bigger challenges in life and while I didn’t coin the phase, that’s my understanding of Post Traumatic Growth What doesn’t kill you can make you mentally stronger. www.pointassist.com.au #pointassist
15.01.2022 After finishing the SAS selection course in 1997, the Warrant Officer in charge invited our cohort to take a look around at the small number of soldiers remaining. This was not the end but just the beginning. We had in fact merely been deemed trainable. That each and every day of our service we would need to be 100% committed to developing our skill. ... That we would be working in difficult and uncertain environments where only the strongest and best would succeed. That our service was a "daily renewable contract". This was the first of many times I would hear this phrase and it’s gravity was never once lost. The reality; in 20 years at the end of our service we would no longer be standing together. Not all would survive. As the years went by and my mates were retired due to injury or killed in the line of duty; we began to understand the wisdom this soldier was custodian to. The acceptance of suffering in the service of your community and country truly is the most notable of traits and still to this day leaves me speechless. I have witnessed the sacrifice and suffering of greater people than myself. The families of the fallen, the physically and emotionally scarred. These are the great Australians I chose to remember and thank this ANZAC day. #Australia #ANZAC #Veteran #service #sacrifice #australian

14.01.2022 We make no secret at Point Assist that ADF veterans are among the best adventure guides out there. Adaptable decision makers, it’s their authenticity mixed with a healthy amount of audacity that creates the perfect environment for people to grow through the experience of adventure. That’s why we are thrilled to introduce Brendan as part of the Point Assist team.... Growing up in Tasmania, it was Brendan’s own sense of adventure and mateship that led him to join the Royal Australian Regiment, where he served in Iraq and East Timor, as well as border security operations around Australia. After several overseas deployments it was Brendan’s interest in the application of Military Working Dogs that saw him transfer to the Royal Australian Air Force where he spent the next few years as a military working dog handler and trainer, specialising in field tracking and detection capabilities After his 18 years’ service in the ADF Brendan moved home to Tasmania in 2019 and joined us on the first Veterans Active Recreation Program event November 2020. Brendan has a great career ahead of him as an adventure guide and personal safety expert and we are excited to have him on board at Point Assist. #pointassist #adventure #tasmania

14.01.2022 Day three at Freycinet on our Tasmanian Government Sponsered Veteran Adventure was the long straight beach hike out. First along Cooks Beach then Hazards Beach. While a little easier on day 3 than day 2, you still clock up a few kilometres and the scenery is still magic. 13.01.2022 Day one of the first VARP in Hobart, what a great start to the program. We want to thank Luke Richmond - Adventurer, Harry Moffitt from Stotan Group, Jo from Clinical FX, Brendan Barry and Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service for sharing their time and experience. We are now looking forward to getting out into the Tassie Wilderness on a trekking adventure.
09.01.2022 It was just over 12 months ago we first heard about COVID-19 2020 has been a challenging year that has reminded us of the importance of flexibility and adaptability, to control what we can and put aside what we can't, to reflect on what's important and contemplate how we want to spend our time in the future. While our overseas expeditions were put on hold, we continued to find adventure and achievement locally through adventure riding, trekking and launching our two signature... events - the Veterans Active Recreation Program, sponsored by the Tasmanian Government and Point and Shoot, a photographic account of military life. As we head into 2021 still with much uncertainty around the COVID landscape, we take this same attitude of resourcefulness, committed to gaining more life experience while making everyday count. #pointassist
08.01.2022 While day one of the VARP this week involved theory and knowledge day two we got out for some practical experience. Thanks to Wild Education Tasmania for the advice and great start to the day in South Hobart; and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania and Tasmania Police for taking the time to improve our knowledge of emergency rescue in Tasmania. Getting back to our core business of improving through experience, we are heading out now for three days in the remote Tasmanian wilderness. See you all Friday.
07.01.2022 For any Australian Defence Force (ADF) member or Veteran, when you want to openly display your photos from your time serving in the military, you need to get your photos cleared by the ADF for security reasons. Your photos remain copyright to the Commonwealth of Australia and are not to be used for any Commercial Purposes. Having recently gone through the process for all our photos to be displayed at the Point & Shoot exhibition; I thought I would share a few of my own photos.... This photo was taken in Afghanistan in 2002 and shows Afghan men with a tractor load Hash possibly heading to market. We were driving down the road on this particular day, in our open patrol vehicle’s, when I saw them coming the other way. I just had to stop and get a picture. I like this photo for two reasons. One, its just not something you see everyday growing up in Australia; and two, look how happy the guys on the tractor are. A sign of how happy the Afghan people were to see us in 2001 and 2002. Afghanistan has a large Hash smoking culture and this trailer load most likely would have been consumed locally. Photo taken by Mark Direen while on deployment to Afghanistan. Mark is a former Australian SAS Soldier and the creator of the Point & Shoot exhibition. (Picture Copyright Commonwealth of Australia. Not to be used for any Commercial Purposes.) 07.01.2022 Everyone was feeling alive as we started to traverse the range to the second peak. After a clear morning, I remember looking to the south west and seeing the changing weather conditions coming. It was clear to me how easy these guy were taking this walk in their stride. There were difficult boulder fields to cross and the route selection was always challenging, but the team was making light work of the alpine range. I thought to myself as we ate lunch what an honor it was to be given another opportunity to endure a little hardship with such good quality people. As the rain and wind started to pick up and we finished lunch; the what do you think look on everyone’s face was priceless as I asked if they wanted to try for the second mountain peak.
06.01.2022 One of the categories coming up in our photo exhibition is the Career Shot. A photo or 60 second video clip taken by a Tasmanian Veteran or Front Line First Responder while they were at work. The image can be from anywhere in the world and taken on any device. This one was taken by Mark while working in Kabul. Can you make out where it was taken and any land marks in the picture?

05.01.2022 Speaking recently at the North Hobart Football Club for Veterans Health Week, it was great to meet a top group of Veterans from the TPI organization in Hobart. While the talk was designed to motivate, concentrating primarily on my military career and change over to be a consultant and expedition leader; I do like to add some of my own life’s lessons into my talks. I enjoy passing on my experience's and how I now get the most out of life. I believe touching on topics like mental toughness, purpose, passion, curiosity, ownership, perspective and leadership makes my speaking engagements even more interesting. http://www.pointassist.com.au/motivational-speaking.html

01.01.2022 As a country we need to protect as many Australians as we can, especially our seniors who have created the great country we have inherited today. But we need a targeted approach to protect the vulnerable. Not an approach that restricts everyone because we have vulnerable people in society. Our current approach of broad brush stimulus packages and statewide lockdowns is not economically or socially sustainable. If we continue on this trajectory our vulnerable populations are at greater risk in the long term with reduced funding for health, aged care and other services as we attempt to flatten the curve in the years to come. http://www.pointassist.com.au/blog/for-we-are-young-and-free
