25.01.2022 Having the conversation is a great start to addressing Black mental health. Thank you to the African Think Tank for putting together a conference that allowed us to do just that.

23.01.2022 Times up" is a track that reflects a conversation between 2 young African artists working in the Australian music industry. An industry that has often been careless in protecting the wellbeing of Black Artists. The labour put on marginalised people to have to address systemic racism every day means more trauma and pressure on our mental health and emotional state. At a time like this, its important to let my friends and the wider African community know that these services... exist and our health matters. If you would like support/join me in donating, the link is in my bio.

22.01.2022 Sampa The Great x Pola Psychology. Thank you to all that have supported this project. It has already seen a number of young people inquire about accessing this package. Here is some information about the criteria and referral process. Please be mindful spaces are limited by funding.

21.01.2022 People engage in activism in part because of a strong emotion, connection to the cause, and a sense of morality. As a result, they expend emotional labour as well as other forms of labour doing the work which makes them uniquely susceptible to emotional exhaustion and overworking, resulting in #burnout. @ Pola Psychology

20.01.2022 SelfCare is hard at the best of times and these are not the best of times. Here’s a 10 min video on another way to look at self care that hopefully shows you don’t need to buy anything to engage in good selfcare.

15.01.2022 I started this practice because it was the place I needed when I was looking for a therapist. I planned to be the kind of therapist that I wanted to see, someone competent in their discipline and also culturally responsive. Cultural responsivity to me is about having an awareness of sociopolitical factors that have an impact on mental health and creating a safe space to explore the individual experience within the societal context. 10.01.2022 For those who make New Years resolutions, add this one to the list. So often we miss opportunities to celebrate small and big wins. Getting distracted by what we could have done better or differently. Knowing full well that our pondering doesnt change what did actually happen, all it does is put a negative filter over what was otherwise a happy moment. So enjoy the wins. Fully allowing yourself to have that moment of joy. Worry can and does wait when its told directly an...d assertively to do so. You made it to the end of this year! It might have felt like gripping at the edge of a cliff but you held on and made it. Well done! Just for this moment just pause and appreciate what youve achieved. Worry and critic can wait. Happy New Year All

10.01.2022 My thoughts and coping strategies. The murder of unarmed black people in America is unfortunately not new and the murder of #georgefloyd was definitely not an isolated incident, familiarity doesnt diminish the distress it brings up (nor should it). It adds to the pain of ever present wounds that are familiar to us here #justicefortanyaday ... There is an all too familiar pain from these brutal reminders of state of the world we live in, one where racism is systemic and deadly. During this time there are three things helping me get through. 1. It is important to allow yourself to feel without numbing because whatever you feel is valid. 2. Find safe spaces to process (see second image), sometimes that is a physical space but other times is creating a mental space and this meditation is an example. 3. Look at ways you can help create change (see image 3). That looks different for all of us but the magnitude of the change we need requires many hands doing their part. @ Naarm

10.01.2022 Failure is a necessary part of personal growth. We learn to speak because we try and fail as infants. We keep trying because we have not yet been socialized to associate failure with shame nor have we developed self deprecating internal dialog. As infants, we "goo goo" and "gaa gaa" our way through life until we develop our verbal language skills, which we then use to chastise ourselves for future failures. The most valuable thing we can learn from our failures is to unlearn ...the idea that failure is a negative. . . . . . . . #notestoself #selfcare #psychology #polapsychology #mentalhealth #depression #anxiety #therapy See more

06.01.2022 Request for Allied Health Volunteers for Bush Fire Recovery. It has been hard to comprehend what is happening in Australia, and like many of us, we have been wondering how we can support those affected. Here is a way in which Allied Health Professionals we can help. A group has been created - Volunteer Therapist Collective - for OTs, Psychologists, Counsellors and other trained professionals around the Nation who can help support victims of the Bush Fires. Those specialising ...in grief, loss, trauma can help support children, adults, families and people affected by the devastation. The fires will finally stop but the effects will last much longer. The group is looking for trained professionals located all across Australia, to create an outreach support to people affected by the fires. Volunteers can be individual or group support; short, medium or long term support. If you are keen to help, please contact Amanda Parsons - email [email protected] - with your email address and mobile number. Amanda will send a form to collect your name, profession, contact details, what geographical area you could reach out to, as well as an approximate commitment of time you could offer (not including travel), e.g., weekly hrs, monthly visits etc; population of experience: e.g., paediatrics, adults, family, aged care etc. Areas of expertise eg, grief & loss, trauma, PTSD, mental health, OT role support, life skills, gratitude development, rehabilitation, equipment prescription, burns etc etc. The more information you can provide regarding what you may be able to offer the better! If you cannot assist in person, Amanda is also hoping to help via tele-health, skype, if these services are available to be received at some stage. For more information, head to the Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/Volunteer-Therapist-Collective-102713477928962/
