25.01.2022 OWICZ The historical owicz region is part of Mazowsze, one of the five main ethnographic areas of Poland. The region is situated in the very heart of the country, southwest of Warsaw, in the valley of one of the Vistula’s tributaries, the river Bzura. Once the whole territory was covered with primeval forests. They were owned by the Mazovian princes and were their hunting grounds. Although practically nonexistent today, originally the dark forests provided plenty of shade ...for the streams, rivers, and lakes where the local inhabitants took advantage of the abundant fish as a food source. Perhaps one of the prince’s hunting manors was the basis for the formation of the present town of owicz. The town’s name is derived from the geographical characteristics of the area. Just compare it with the words owca or its archaic equivalent owiec the hunter, owy the hunt, owisko both the hunting and the fishing ground, or owic to fish. #owicz #polartfacts #owickistrój #haftludowe #folklore #ludowestroje

23.01.2022 NOWY SCZ The area around the southern Polish town of Nowy Scz has an ancient history. Neolithic settlements from 4000 B.C. have been found there as have settlements of Lusatian people from 1700 B.C. Historical information begins in the ninth century A.D. Towards the end of the thirteenth century, the town of Nowy Sacz itself was established as trade between this area and Czech and Hungarian regions to the south grew. At that time German settlers from the west settled here. ...In the fifteenth century, Ruthenians from Volhinya also came. They settled in more than thirty villages. The Sadecki people incorporated elements of Ruthenian folklore and costume into their own. Although they borrowed the wide leather belts and embroidered parzenice from the trousers of the mountaineers (gorale) they did not include other elements of their folklore because they were farmers and artisans and not shepherds like the gorale. The men and women dance a unique blend of vigorous dances. The men, clad in their richly ornamented wool coats, dance with spirit showing-off their skill and strength. The women join in to add color and excitement to a series of traditional polka and regional folk melodies. : @emilydimozantos #nowyscz #folklore #taceludowe #scz #polishboys

22.01.2022 Kociuszko Mound (Kopiec Kociuszki) in Kraków, Poland, erected in commemoration of the Polish national leader Tadeusz Kociuszko, is an artificial mound modeled after Kraków's prehistoric mounds of Krak and Wanda. A serpentine path leads to the top, approximately 326 metres above sea level, with a panoramic view of the Vistula River and the city. The Kociuszko Mound inspired Count Paul Strzelecki, Polish patriot and Australian explorer, to name the highest mountain in Australia -Mount Kosciuszko - because of its perceived resemblance to the Kociuszko Mound in Kraków. #Kociuszko #mtkosciuszko

12.01.2022 Another little something for all those on school holidays!

12.01.2022 Bursztyn - Amber - the Baltic Gold Amber has always been the native gemstone of Poland. The country's coastline once supplied ancient Greeks and Romans with their precious 'electrum' via the famous Amber Road that used to connect the Baltic Sea with the Mediterranean. Amber is a mineral of many names: 'jantar', good stone, sacred stone, gold of the north, Baltic gold, and electron. Amber is also a mineral of many colours. Depending on the age amber nuggets range from nearly w...hite, through all shades of yellow and orange, to dark, almost cherry-like red. Amber has been an object of admiration and interest for centuries. Its beauty, pleasing smell, and ease of processing have always earned it a place among decorative stones. : @anotherlook73 #bursztynbaltycki #amber #bursztyn #polskibursztyn #balticamber

02.01.2022 BESKID YWIECKI Men's trousers were made of home-made cloth. In the first half of In the nineteenth century, they were called Hungarian trousers because of their form similar to the uniforms of the Hungarian troops. Another name is "Walaskie pants". The pants were fitted to the body and only reached the hips. Zywiec pants, like the Silesian ones, had one strut - a "buttress" on the right side. The seams were reinforced with black or red cloth, which created a kind of trimming.... They had a several-centimeter overlap at the waist, through which a thong was threaded. Trouser embellishments were small embroidery around the strut and legs. : @pracowniamody_regionalnej #beskidywiecki #strójludowy #beskidy #haftbeskidzki
