25.01.2022 Are you looking to add a kitten to your family? I work with the team at Box Hill Vet Clinic who currently have 26 (yes, 26!!!) kittens in care. The kittens ran...ge from 1 day old up to 8 weeks, so while everyone needs a home (as well as 2 mumma cats), not everyone is ready now. Like most vet clinics who rehome animals, a lot of work has gone into saving and raising these kittens. All kittens have been vet checked and will be vaccinated (and desexed) at the appropriate age as part of the adoption process. Please spread the word and contact the clinic if you are looking to provide a lifelong home to a (super gorgeous) kitten in need. Spread the word!! Clinic email: [email protected] Phone: (02) 9679 1749 Remember: Be patient....all staff are tired from kitten raising on top of working long hours!!!

14.01.2022 Welcome to our gallery of fantastic clients. We want to share our stories because many people don't think their pets can be helped so they don't get help and th...e results are really depressing. So yes we can get help and wow the results are awesome. This is Skye's story. Skye is an amazing young Doberman, 2 years old now, who displayed some odd behaviour. She was anxious right from puppyhood, is easily scared by loud noises and reacts to other dogs by barking and lunging. When overstimulated she tends to spin in circles and unfortunately caught mum in this action and mum ended up with a broken leg. Now Skye's family have had Dobermans before so they knew this wasn't typical and they enlisted the help of a trainer. Some trainers are truly amazing (shout out to Deb & Karen), others not so great - this trainer recommended a prong collar. Yes a prong collar - these are illegal in Australia and when you put a painful piece of equipment on an already anxious dog, surprise surprise, we get an even more anxious dog and an escalation of the undesirable behaviour. Luckily Skye's family thought the trainer was rubbish and ignored his suggestions. So, Skye is an anxious dog who actually also has a compulsive disorder - a little like OCD in people but she doesn't obsess, she spins. And just like my sister in law who is a compulsive cleaner, Skye is actually not in control of this compulsion. Compulsive disorders very importantly need to be treated seriously and early to have the best change of a resolution. So we started Skye on some medication for her compulsive disorder and we are working on exercises for her anxieties. And just 4 weeks later, I am happy to report that Skye is a happier dog, who is enjoying life more and I am so thrilled to be part of her journey. See more

10.01.2022 We are committed to giving your pet the most "Fear Free" experience as possible. Almost all of our staff now are officially #FearFree certified, which is the co...urse we base our business model on (Fear Free Pets). So how are we different to most clinics? - All of our consultations are half an hour (or longer), to give your pet enough time to feel comfortable, and ensure your visit isn't rushed. We do our best to get you straight into a consult room too, to help avoid waiting room run-ins with pets that may be anxious around other animals. - All dogs are given an Adaptil sprayed bandana, and our cat-only consult room is sprayed with Feliway on arrival to utilise comforting pheromones during your pet's visit. We also have spray diffusers around the clinic to keep that pheromone-game strong! - Unless when absolutely necessary (like in an emergency), we do not use forceful handling techniques on any animal. Cuddles and bribery with lots and lots of snacks is how we roll! Distracting with licky-mats is a personal favourite for our injections! We would rather re-schedule an appointment to when your pet is more comfortable, than force them into a situation that may make them become afraid of the vet! - We will never "take your animal out the back" for treatments. All needles, blood draws, nail clips, ear cleans and other small procedures are done with the owner present, to minimise the anxiety caused by removing the animal from their person. - For the bigger procedures, dentals and surgeries, there's no "morning drop-off" - we ask you to stick around with your pet while they get nice and sleepy, before taking them away for their operation. They will also never wake up alone in a cage - we find they come around much smoother waking up in a nurse's arms . - We will not use medication as a "last resort" when treating an anxious pet. Drugs such as Gabapentin are happily prescribed as a pre-med before your consultation, to put your pet in a relaxed mindset when visiting the clinic. - We are big advocates for "friendly visits" (coming in, for free, and being showered with love and nothing pointy), and desensitisation techniques - introducing our nervous patients slowly to scary things like blood tests! - Even our scales are covered in fake grass to make them a little less scary for our pooches! Call us to book in for a consult today to see how else we strive to be different!

10.01.2022 Todays "Don't Be An Idiot" advice Leave the mask wearing to the humans please. I can't believe that we have to have this wee chat ... Please don't put masks on your animals. it can obstruct their breathing. Just like we don't put masks on babies and toddlers <2 the risk of choking is high. it can create anxiety - just look at the fear and worry in the eyes of the pets in the few pictures we shared. While you might think this is a fun way of getting the message across, your pet certainly doesn't think so. For every 'fun' picture there will be a pet who is petrified. Just don't.

06.01.2022 THANK YOU DEAR FRIENDS Prudence has a travel plan and will be leaving Harrington next week. Your suggestions have resulted in an amazing outcome...starting wit...h recommendations to contact The Mini Kitty Commune who then suggested Paws & Recover. Their assistance resulted with the beautiful people at Pet Professionals Australia RTO 70236 helping out. You've been amazing and the support offered is overwhelming. Thank you all...will keep you updated! ------------------------------------------------ I'm trying to rescue a much loved cat from Northern NSW and other than a two stage flight (with overnight in Sydney) and a cost of over $1000, there's no options until flights are back up and running (Pt Macquarie, Sydney, Melbourne). Just asking if anybody who works in the rescue world has any ideas or options. Prudence, who is pictured below, is now residing temporarily as her mum is terminally ill and not coming home, she's with her original mum who has a cat and can't keep both. Prudence is 8 and is grieving her loss. I'd be so grateful for any advice. Please don't suggest rehoming her locally - she requires special care and a single owner household and I've already fallen in love. Her mum is a very special friend and she wouldn't let Pru go to just anyone - so we have to make this happen. Thank you friends - look forward to your feedback.

06.01.2022 We currently have two gorgeous kittens, one male, one female and they are ready to go to their forever homes. At the moment they are quite timid so ideally a single person or couples would suit these fur babies. Please contact the clinic if you are interested. 9653 1622

05.01.2022 Are you prepared for the heat wave this weekend? Now is the time to start thinking ahead - -Do you have enough shade in your back yard? -Do you have spare wa...ter bowls? -Can you bring your pets inside? -Are you going to be home? If not, how will you prepare you pets to survive the heat? Some handy things to do include: Freeze water bottles and icecream containers with water For rabbits and guinea pigs, frozen oranges and carrots make a great refreshing treat -Wet towels to lay on No exercising you dogs - not in the morning or late afternoon - the ground becomes very hot and their coping mechanisms are reduced in consecutive heat days If you are at all worried - give your veterinarian a call! 9639 7744

03.01.2022 I am a Dobermann, cataloged one of the most intelligent and most feared dogs, I have served the US Navy and I will not narrate my dark past on the German side.... They called me the devil's dog, today they ask me to behave like a Poodle, they have gone so far as to wear clothes ... I am a Malinois: Gifted among dogs, I shine in all disciplines and I am always ready to work. Today they ask me to relax on the couch all day. I am an Akita Inu: My ancestors have been selected to fight with other dogs. Today they ask me to be tolerant of my peers, and they blame me for my reactivity when one of them approaches me. I am a Beagle: When I followed my prey, I gave a voice so that the hunters could follow me. I was leading the dance. Today they put an electric collar on me to silence me, and they want me to return to the call in a snap of fingers. I am a Yorkshire Terrier: I was a rat catcher, fearsome in the English mines. Today they think that I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms. I am a Labrador Retriever: My vision of happiness is a dip in a pond to bring my master the duck he just shot. Today we forget that I am a sports dog, I am fat and I have to babysit the children. I am a Jack Russell Terrier: I am capable of facing a fox larger than me in its own den. Today they blame me for my damn character and want to turn me into a parlor dog. I am a Siberian husky: I got to know the great spaces of northern Russia, where I could pull sledges at impressive speed. Today I only have the walls of the garden on my horizon, and my only occupation is the holes I dig in the ground. I am a Border Collie: I am cut out to work eight hours a day, and I am an incomparable artist of herd labor. Today they blame me because in the absence of sheep, I try to control bicycles, cars, children from home, and everything that is in motion. I am... I'm a 19th century dog I am handsome, I am alert, I am obedient, I can put up with being in a purse ... but I am also an individual who needs to express his instincts, and I am not suitable for the sedentary life that you want me to carry. Spending eight hours a day alone on the patio, seeing you a little at night when you come back, and being entitled to any activity just a short walk to the bathroom will make me deeply unhappy. I'll express it by barking all day, turning your garden into a minefield, relieving myself on the inside, being unmanageable the few times I'll find myself on the outside, and sometimes spending my days on my cushion, then you'll think I'm happy to To be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work: in reality I will be in full depression, because it is not the preference of the human, but also that of the dog of the XXI century. If you like me, if you dream of me forever, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athlete look make you want to possess me, but you can't give me a real life of a full dog, a life that is really worth living, and if not you can offer me the job my genes claim ... then quit me. If you like my rhythm but are not ready to accept my character traits from rigorous genetic selection, and you think you can change them with your only good will ... then quit me. I'm a 19th century dog, yes. But, deep there, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who led a herd still sleeps. And sooner or later, you will wake up. For better or worse. Elsa Weiss Éducation Canine / Cynopolis Translation edited by Razas Poderosas y de Trabajo.

02.01.2022 Not many days working as a vet go by where I don’t see a pet who has disease related to breeding or genetics. With large numbers of new pets, especially puppies..., getting new homes this year, vets everywhere are often faced with telling owners that their pet has, or will develop a condition that will affect its quality of life. And sometimes the disease we are talking about is life threatening. I wander how many pet owners would make a better informed decision about which pet to bring into their life if ‘pre-purchase’ veterinary consultations or examinations were more routine. Before you pick up your new pet, please, arrange an appointment with your vet. Or ask the breeder/pet shop/source of your pet, if you can take the animal to your vet for a pre-purchase assessment. When paying thousands of dollars for a living being, it is difficult to imagine why an ethical breeder/person would object to such a request. Your vet will be able to help advise on whether your new family member is at risk of, or if they 'will' develop a problem that might affect their quality of life and/or result in additional veterinary expenses. Here are some breeds that come with predispositions to ophthalmic conditions that may affect their comfort, vision, quality of life.

01.01.2022 Oh to see those that never want to leave, melts your heart Reminds us on why we are here

01.01.2022 Hyperarousal is another sign of stress. If you don't understand these behaviors, your dog will suffer a less than optimal life. Punishing these behaviors can c...ause more stress which could lead to aggression. Thanks again, to the Vet Behaviour Team http://www.vetbehaviourteam.com/ for creating this awesome educational info-graph. Many people, think that training and high exercise is the best way to work this out of a dog and I couldn't disagree more. Less exercise, short training sessions and A LOT of rest keeping the dog below threshold will do a #dog with these behaviors a world of good, enabling them to learn much better. Making rest, gentle touch/massage, a priority in the bulk of their day will bring them much farther along in becoming more balanced and confident. #dogbehavior #dogtraining #doglover #veterinarian #vettech #rescuedog #shelterdog
