24.01.2022 The events in the USA show the deep connections between what we mean by 'security' and how it relates to our political life and order. We explore these themes in POL20010 (IR & Security Studies) and POL30009 (Critical Perspectives on Terrorism) this semester. Join us to investigate what we mean by terrorism, violence, global and domestic security. If you have completed POL10002, POL20010 is the next step! https://foreignpolicy.com//capitol-police-trump-mob-capit/

17.01.2022 Victorian Parliamentary Internship Program (VPIP 2021) Applications are now open for the Victorian Parliamentary Internship Program which will run in semester 2, 2021. Students who participate in the VPIP are placed with a current member of the Victorian Parliament and complete a significant research project jointly supervised by the MP and academic staff from Swinburne. Participation in the unit counts for 25 credit points towards your degree and the time commitment is app...roximately 1 days per week as well as weekly half-day research workshops held on Friday mornings. At this stage these workshops will be held face-to face at Parliament House, but this is subject to change depending on COVID-19 developments. Entry to the program is competitive, with eligibility normally limited to students with a Distinction average. Please note that the program will not run in 2022 due to the timing of the state election. With this in mind we encourage eligible students currently studying at second and third year level to apply this year. Students interested in completing the internship are invited to submit an Expression of Interest comprising a brief cover letter outlining their reasons for undertaking the placement (250 words); a transcript of their grades; a CV; and a sample of their writing (eg. an essay or paper). Applications should be emailed to [email protected] by 5pm Friday May 14th. For further information contact Dr Damon Alexander.

13.01.2022 Our terrific student Kate di Salvatore is doing an internship at the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) through Swinburne. The ALGWA organisation enables women who have an interest in local government to stay informed, connected, and inspired and excel in local government. You do not need to have the interest of working in politics to join the community. She is looking to grow the ALGWA community: "I have already learnt so much about local government by ...being a part of the community in a short time and I truly think ALGWA is a valuable resource for other students." Kate in particular would like to reach out to female students at Swinburne through social media to connect. There is a Free online forum next Thursday to speak to Uruguayan Senator, Carmen Sanguinetti, to discuss the important role of women in high level decision-making. Join the special event on the 10th of September 7:30pm. Use the Trybooking link below to register your spot; https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=649337

11.01.2022 Volunteers wanted for survey on political engagement and pod-cast listening... Hi All, One of our PhD students at Swinburne (Dylan Bird) is looking for people to complete a quick survey for his study on political engagement and news podcast listening. It's a really interesting project, so if you fit the criteria and have a spare 10-15 minutes it would be great if you could help him out! Further details and a link to the survey below.... Cheers, Damon I’m writing to request your participation in a survey of news podcast listeners in Australia. The survey forms part of my PhD project at Swinburne University of Technology exploring news podcasts and democracy, and will help inform a pilot episode for a new podcast that will be produced as part of my candidature in collaboration with Melbourne-based community broadcaster Triple R FM. I am seeking survey participants who: Have listened to a news podcast in the past month Currently reside in Australia Are aged 18 years or older If you fit the criteria, it would be great if you could fill out the survey at a time of your convenience by clicking on this link. It should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. For the purposes of the survey, a news podcast is considered any that is listed within the ‘News’ or ‘News and Politics’ categories in popular podcatchers such as Apple Podcasts and Spotify, but can also include any podcast that you think qualifies as ‘news’. You will not be personally identified in any published survey results, although I would like to conduct follow-up interviews with some participants for potential inclusion in a podcast. I am also interested in recruiting some participants to give feedback on a podcast pilot that will be informed by the survey and follow-up interviews. The survey includes a provision to record your full name and email address for the purposes of recruiting participants for these subsequent research activities, however if you are not interested in participating in these and wish to remain anonymous you may skip over this question. Alternatively, you can directly register interest in participating in either of these activities by contacting me according to the information below. More information about the project, including how the data will be used and confidentiality provisions, can be found on the landing page of the survey. Take the survey by clicking on the link below: https://swinuw.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2gxGdPpMJHDDnal.

11.01.2022 Hey folks, I just want to pass on some info on an upcoming workshop that's taking place next week as part of Swinburne's pride week. Monday 28 September - 1pm 4pm ... Writing the Body workshop with Quinn Eades Eventbrite Listing to register - https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/writing-the-body-workshop-w (Links to an external site.) Please note there are limited places available so registration is vital. Writing the body: workshop description: The pleasure of the text is that moment when my body pursues its own ideasfor my body does not have the same ideas as I do. Roland Barthes, The Pleasure of the Text, p. 17 This workshop is a chance to meet and learn from award-winning poet, writer and researcher, Dr Quinn Eades. The focus will be on writing from (rather than about) life experiences and the body, particularly around gender and sexuality. Quinn will discuss the politics of life writing, and the ways that writing stories from ‘other’ bodies can broaden minds and promote social change. Quinn will share information about his own writing practice, and then set a series of writing exercises, some of them to music. Please be aware that writing the body has the potential to bring with it writing trauma. Quinn will share how he works with trauma in writing, including ways to keep ourselves grounded when engaging with challenging material, but participants will need to bring an awareness of their limits to the workshop space. Quinn Eades is a writer, researcher, editor, gutter philosopher and poet, whose book Rallying was awarded the 2018 Mary Gilmore Award for best first book of poetry. He is the author of all the beginnings: a queer autobiography of the body, and is a Tracey Banivanua Mar Research Fellow at La Trobe University, Melbourne.

07.01.2022 The final report of a project supported by the Victorian Government on the link between far-right extremist sentiment and anti-feminism is now out. The report shows how far-right and anti-gender ideas are mutually reinforcing, why social media platforms are important (and varied), and what stakeholders face when confronted with this. https://apo.org.au//resource-fil/2020-12/apo-nid307612.pdf

Do you agree as... this is a financially responsible way forward for the university? Do you disagree and stand with the numerous students left in limbo with their degrees? See more
