23.01.2022 Rules Tested In Argentina By Ron Allen The world leader in polo continues to show the way to improve the game of polo. The new ‘Evolution Cup’ will be played next Thursday and Sunday in Argentina. Four teams have entered with a handicap up to 34 goals. The concept is to test several rule changes to make the game better for both spectators and players.... On the list of changes are: only one 10-goal player per team. A qualified substitute must be available for each team. The games will be six chukkers. Each player will only be allowed to bring nine horses to the match. There will be a limit of six fouls per player in a game. If that player fouls out the sub can be brought in to finish the match. And there will be a two-point conversion line outside the 80-yard marker. While this is only a test, the AAP will be getting feedback from everyone involved to determine how to go forward in the future. These new innovations would make a dramatic difference in speeding up the game while cutting down on the number of fouls committed. The changes might be something that the progressive new World Polo League in the U.S. could take into consideration for next February.
23.01.2022 Media Mystery By Ron Allen As someone who has spent an entire career in broadcasting I was initially impressed with the following quote from a recent USPA press release: The USPA Polo Network saw tremendous growth in viewership. The average viewership per game increased by 1,084% at 7,237 per game. That means in 2017 the average viewership was only 700 per game. It costs the USPA $6,000 per game and yet there are no revenue producing commercials to recoup any of this expen...se. What they don’t tell us are the true numbers of ‘minutes watched per game’, which is what potential advertisers need to know. On the NFL football steam each viewer is watching an average of 22 minutes a game. Hulu tells us that the cost for 1,000 impressions is $35. At some point the mathematical logic of this expensive venture needs to come under tighter scrutiny. No numbers were made available for women’s polo, NYTS, Arena Open or the East and West Coast Opens. It’s safe to assume that those numbers were extremely low, which would bring down the total measurement of their success. I understand the concept of building a larger audience over time but it’s difficult to understand how an organization with only 5,000 members can claim an audience of 17,000 for a Gold Cup match. Even though more people are using streaming the great majority of people still watch live sports on television. One hour of polo a year on real TV is not going to result in building any kind of following for the sport.
