25.01.2022 To go through or to split and run aimlessly! When your morning mood depends on the decisions of sheep. Small sheep at that
24.01.2022 Don’t you love it when people ask for photos of 5 week old pups? Mandy Rudd I think Dozer is a bad influence.
21.01.2022 I haven’t been out to the farm where I muster for a few weeks. Challenging day mustering yesterday. 6 pretty constant hours. 900 Lambs and about 200 ewes which ...got back with them in mobs all over the place over 9 paddocks. Hills, gullies, creeks the lot. Wind in the wrong direction. Great test for the dogs. I was short one expert as Theia in lockup. First video 3 hours into it. Titan bringing some feral lambs down other side of creek. Had to leave him to it. He took them through the creek and past two more paddock fences after the one you see behind ewes and lambs at end of video. Sent them up a 600 metre laneway. I had to stay with ewes and lambs - cunning as and headed back into wind if left. Next two are Tora. Some really tricky lambs. Put them through a scrubby part of the creek and taking them to gateway to hill. She has more eye, likes to please and looks to command more than most of my dogs, as you can see in second video. She is a great team dog and she’ll stop doing that as she gets more experienced at tricky single handed jobs. Had to stop videoing as was concerned they’d go past the gate. See more
21.01.2022 Theia (Sam) is otherwise occupied with her three little daughters. Her older daughter Tora has stepped up to second in rank. Last week checking ewes for John on his beautiful property. Had a great time!
16.01.2022 Here is a small extract from G.S Kempe's "The Collie Dog:- A Tribute. This whole article was published in the WKC Bulletin more than once over the years. It was also published in the Pastoralists Review.1908. It answered my questions regarding the natural work of Bullenbong Mate. Shortly after my arrival in Victoria in 1870 on Hugh Glass's Campaspe River Station.... the dogs Foxy and Smoker "... Foxy, a grand specimen of the true Collie.. who first showed me how a dog should...Continue reading
16.01.2022 When you have OCD and there is a LAMB that hasn’t come through the creek......
15.01.2022 Cheeky for years my greatest asset in low stress cattle handling. She is mostly Murray Grey blood with a touch of Simmental. Not hand reared. In 2014 while I was away her young calf caught pneumonia and by the time I got home it was too ill to be saved. After an unsuccessful attempt at fostering a calf onto her - she wanted it desperately but it wouldn’t oblige- she got mastitis. I couldn’t bring myself to send her off. She is so intelligent. After another bout of mastiti...s next calving, I decided that she wouldn’t have any more calves and would earn her keep another way. This is it! Along with my other two coachers she has saved me countless hours, wear on the ATV and farm ute, stress etc. The stock agents knew her and often unkindly referred to her as the hippopotamus. The dogs were not pleased as they had nothing to do and just sat on the bike as she strolled past. The largest mob of weaners she’s led was 75. UWhen I moved I asked a good friend to take care of her on his farm and she is working there now. this video with a few heifers. See more
15.01.2022 A lovely way to spend Australia Day. Mustering on one property and rounding up a few lambs on another property and taking them down a road to another paddock. These three lasses all earned Aust day honours on 750 shorn lambs without Titan because when I left him and Tora over on the hill on the right wing one lamb must not have wanted to walk. I was watching Theia and Lily on the left lead which wanted to bolt across the hill and down the valley. When the right hand tail of the mob came over the hill just Tora no Titan. Had to leave him to it. Took mob through gully, another hill and two more paddocks. Half and hour later went back to find him. Got him to bark so I knew where he was. The bark flushed a couple of ferals out on other side of creek. Got them.
14.01.2022 Here they come. Thankyou Cheeky. Can’t seem to get post to accept more than one video at a time.
13.01.2022 A day mustering the true ferals for shearing. At the base of every hill there is a creek and sometimes a dam. The owner does contract work with a crutching trai...ler and has a team of good yard to all round dogs; no mustering experts. The sheep know they can beat them in this country and have no respect for the dogs. Run downhill to the creeks and cover as soon as they can. Split up and go over the top of the dogs and straight through fences. Took Titan, Theia (Sam), Tora and Lilly on bike. Warm enough. Titan is nearly 12 and one of the masters of this game. I’ve seen his like a few times only in my lifetime. Lilly, learning her trade, excelled herself in the left lead when some of the wild shorn lambs kept wanting to string the mob out around the hills. The other two just their usual reliable selves. I’ll explain each pic. Too hard to video while working. See more
11.01.2022 Cheeky taking steers to yards the last time. I just hunted the last few in.
10.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day to all dads and father figures. Wishing you a great day!
07.01.2022 Three litters. All gone to their new homes. More interesting experience than usual organising travel for them. I’ve so enjoyed looking after them. The first time in 45 years that I didn’t have to prioritise family (well not much this time) and / or running a farm full time as well as the little ones. Some characters in this lot. Thank you Theia, Carrie and Boanong Gwenne.
05.01.2022 Thought I’d acknowledge the participation of the others in the puppy rearing group. My two dear friends, Boy, the fluffy cat, now twelve, who must at the patter of puppy paws, and Posh, the Italian greyhound, also approx twelve, so long suffering and patient. They’ve seen quite a few come and go. I think they’d prefer them going. Vila the short haired young cat.
02.01.2022 Another day when work was fun. How lucky are we from the pariah state who can do this and call it work? Titan, Tora, Maggie and Demi. Oh! Me too. Don’t know why I’m there. Perhaps to take the pics!
01.01.2022 Puppy delivery 2020 style, handover number 2. Pups will get to their new homes by lunchtime We will always find a way
