25.01.2022 Scientists have finally been able to confirm what they have suspected for a long time that dinosaurs, like birds and reptiles, had a cloaca. What’s still not clear is whether they mated cloaca to cloaca (cloacal kiss), which is what most birds do, or whether they had a penis, like ducks and crocodiles. https://www.newscientist.com//2258023-dinosaur-fossil-wit/

24.01.2022 Sansha is a Japanese brandy made with silkworm droppings. It was co-developed by Antcicada, an experimental kitchen exploring edible insects, and the Mitosaya Botanical Distillery. After fermenting organic mulberries with rice spirit, dried silkworm droppings are added, before the mix proceeds to distillation. In China, silkworm droppings are believed to have medicinal benefits. The Mitosaya Botanical Distillery generously donated two bottles of Sansha to the Pooseum, and they’re now part of the exhibition together with other alcoholic beverages made with poo.

23.01.2022 Could your farts make other people sick? No, I’m not talking about your farts upsetting another person’s nose, but about the germs in your farts! To get to the bottom of this, an experiment was conducted where a guy was asked to fart directly into two Petri dishes, first with his pants on, and then naked. https://www.mentalfloss.com//6205/can-farts-spread-disease

23.01.2022 This hungry python should have thought twice before choosing a porcupine for its next meal! Contrary to popular belief, snakes don’t dislocate their jaws when eating large prey. Instead, their skulls are flexible, which allows them to eat animals that are bigger than they are. Snakes don’t have teeth, so they swallow their prey whole. Their weight can more than double after a large meal. It was not the size of the porcupine that was the problem. It was the quills that pierced... the snake’s intestine and proved to be its undoing. 23.01.2022 Does the Pooseum display any thylacine poo? We frequently get this question. The answer, unfortunately, is no. Neither does the TMAG in Hobart, nor the QVMAG in Launceston, nor any other museum in the world. I guess back then when Tasmanian tigers were still around, people didn’t really care about collecting and preserving their scats! The photo was taken at the QVMAG in Launceston.

22.01.2022 In July, the well-preserved remains of a 10,000-year-old woolly mammoth were discovered on the Yamal peninsula in Siberia, together with the animal’s fossilised poo. The coprolite is of particular interest to scientists because it provides clues about the animal’s diet and the environment back then. https://www.livescience.com/woolly-mammoth-skeleton-poop-si

22.01.2022 While Richmond in Tasmania has a pooing bronze dog (Pooby Doo in front of the Pooseum ), Brussels in Belgium has a peeing bronze dog. Zinneke Pis by Belgian sculptor Tom Frantzen is a bronze sculpture of a dog urinating against a post and a popular tourist attraction. The people of Brussels seem to have a fondness for peeing sculptures. Manneken Pis, Dutch for "Little Pissing Man", is one of Brussels’ most famous landmarks. It depicts a small naked boy urinating into a foun...tain. Jeanneke Pis is the sculpture of a little girl, squatting and peeing. Piss (rající postavy), depicting two men peeing into a shallow basin by Czech artist David erný, can be found outside the Franz Kafka Museum in Prague. The Prague Post called Piss the weirdest sculpture in Prague. A journalist described it as "both controversial and amusing". https://focusonbelgium.be//did-you-know-there-jeanneke-pis https://www.youtube.com/watch

20.01.2022 This defecating elk is part of more than 6000 rock carvings found around Alta in northern Norway. But is this really how elk droppings look like? Photo by Heikki Immonen https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/352/

19.01.2022 That’s the kind of news I have been waiting for! Logan City south of Brisbane is the first local government area in Australia to turn human waste into energy, saving ratepayers half a million dollars a year in running costs of its wastewater operation. Other Australian councils should follow their example! https://www.abc.net.au//logan-city-aims-to-use-po/12748782

16.01.2022 In many developing countries, dung cakes, traditionally made from cow or buffalo dung, are used as an alternative to firewood for cooking, heating and ritual ceremonies. Village women mix fresh cow faeces with hay, mould them with their hands and then let the cakes dry in the sun. This biofuel is easily available and cheap, and the leftover ash can be used as a fertiliser. https://www.youtube.com/watch The photo shows cow dung cakes drying on a roof.

15.01.2022 How would you feel about eating from a poo table? William Buckland (17841856), a Professor of Geology and Mineralogy at Oxford University and an enthusiastic fossil hunter, had a rather unusual table made for his living room. The table top was embedded with cut open and polished limestone nodules, each containing a fish coprolite. Because the mineral veins coming out of the coprolites look like legs, they’re also sometimes called ‘beetle stones’. The eccentric professor enjoyed serving dinner to guests on the poo table before telling them about the specifics of the rocks. The table is currently on display at the Lyme Regis Museum in Dorset, UK. Photo by Lyme Regis Museum http://www.lymeregismuseum.co.uk//upl/2017/03/buckland.pdf

14.01.2022 A sea cave south of Banda Aceh, Sumatra, a region prone to earthquakes and tsunamis, has provided an extraordinary insight into past tsunami activity in the Indian Ocean. Excavations inside the cave exposed cake-like layers of sand left by tsunamis separated by layers of bat poo. Bats were pooping on the cave floor. A tsunami came. Bats pooped. Tsunami, bat poop, tsunami, bat poop, and so on. https://www.theatlantic.com//indonesia-cave-5000-y/534015/... Photo by Earth Observatory of Singapore

13.01.2022 In a naked rat-mole colony, the queen pops out all the babies. She then feeds her hormone-laced poo to sterile female workers, who - thanks to the ingested oestradiol - develop motherly feelings and will happily look after the queen’s young! https://www.sciencealert.com/eusocial-naked-mole-rats-copro

10.01.2022 Ospreys, like other birds, expel uric acid and faeces together through an opening called the cloaca. As demonstrated in this video, the cloacal sphincter muscle of ospreys generates significant pressure during defecation, which comes in handy when trying to keep a nest clean.

09.01.2022 We’ve recently been asked whether these strange looking masses that sometimes pop up in gardens are snake poo. In fact, snake poo looks quite different. It’s called dog vomit slime mould (Fuligo septica) or scrambled egg slime, and the colour can vary between pale yellow, bright yellow and yellowish-grey. Technically these organisms are not fungi, but they share some characteristics with fungi. https://www.tasfungi.com.au/slime-moulds https://www.youtube.com/watch

08.01.2022 This polar bear has probably never heard the saying Don’t sh*t where you eat.

08.01.2022 Tarantulas are big and hairy but actually not that scary! Their venom is not dangerous to humans, and they’re quite docile creatures and easy to care for, making them great pets. 08.01.2022 One of the exciting new additions at the Pooseum is a sculpture by French artist Carole Chanard. Carole’s hybrid creatures, halfway between human and animal, are made from fresh cow dung and then dried in an oven. The shipping from Montpellier in southern France to Richmond in Tasmania took a bit longer than anticipated via Paris to Dubai, back to Paris, back to Dubai, back to Paris, then to Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart, before finally arriving at the Pooseum, with its ears and horns still intact. A miracle! https://www.carolosculpture.com/english

07.01.2022 Over the last decade, bed bugs have re-emerged in the developed world. They can now be found even in 5-star hotels. They live in bedding and under mattresses and feed on blood. They hide during the day but emerge during the night to feed on their sleeping host. Their faeces appear as clusters of tiny spots and contain histamine, a chemical known to cause allergic reactions such as asthma, itchiness, sneezing and watery eyes. There are treatments available to get rid of the bed bugs, but their faeces can remain in mattresses, carpets and furniture upholstery for a very long time. https://www.youtube.com/watch https://www.youtube.com/watch

06.01.2022 Chouara Tannery, the largest of three tanneries in Fes, Morocco, is a popular and very photogenic tourist attraction. Animal hides are soaked in a white liquid made from pigeon excrement, cow urine, quicklime, salt and water to clean and soften the skins so they better absorb the dye. The owners of the tannery proudly tell visitors that they only use manual labour and no modern machinery, and that this method hasn’t changed since medieval times. The ugly reality is that the men at the tannery work in abhorrent conditions, and that large amounts of toxic waste are generated due to the outdated methods used. https://publicaddress.net//bullshit-and-pigeon-shit-insid/

05.01.2022 Wombats might look cute and cuddly, but predators better not mess with them. A wombat’s butt is made up of four fused plates surrounded by cartilage, fat, skin and fur. Wombats use it like a weapon, blocking access to their burrow and crushing any predator trying to enter. https://www.australiangeographic.com.au//wombat-bums-ther/

05.01.2022 This satirical political cartoon by William Dent, a British printmaker and artist, was published in 1789. It depicts the Prince of Wales, Maria Fitzherbert, Charles James Fox, Lord North, Edmund Burke (a prospective Lord Chancellor), and Richard Sheridan with their buttocks exposed, defecating. The paintings on the wall are portraits of the sitters. Unlike today, back then victims of satire were more likely to buy up editions or bribe publishers with a pension than resort to lawsuits to keep unflattering depictions away from the public eye. https://www.oxfordartonline.com//british-visual-satire-18t

04.01.2022 Asian small-clawed otters defecate and urinate in communal latrines. The latrines are popular spots to hang out. Otters have scent glands at the base of their tail which emit a strong, musky smell, adding a personal fragrance to their poo. This provides other otters with information about dominance status, sex, and whether a female is ready for mating - all this from a single sniff! https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/asian-small-clawed-otter

03.01.2022 Looks like he’s heard a good joke! But this male lion’s facial grimacing, known as Flehmen Response, is a reaction to smelling the urine of a female. https://www.facebook.com//a.21179560549/2242179329176445/

03.01.2022 Baby birds poo a lot, but their nests always look spotless. How come? This is a great video showing how American robins keep their nests and hatchlings clean.
