24.01.2022 | # When Kate DeAraugo snatched victory in the third season of Australian Idol at the end of 2005, questions were starting to arise over how enduring the winners' careers could be. Kate scored a quick #1 in the lead up to Christmas with her winner’s single ‘Maybe Tonight’, but held off on her follow-up until March 2006. ‘Faded’ was an immediate chart hit, reaching #8 on debut, but it wasn’t enough to appease label heads, who dropped her as a solo ...artist shortly after. Sony would instead push Kate into joining the Young Divas supergroup at the end of 2006. ‘Faded’ was written by The Veronicas and produced by Matthew Gerrard (‘Lost Without You’, ‘Breakaway’). Thanks to the internet, you can listen to the Veronicas’ original demo on YouTube. The story of ‘Faded’ doesn’t end there though, it was also recorded by Tammin Sursok, Cascada and Everlife. 20.01.2022 | # Towards the end of 1999, *NSYNC were an established pop behemoth heading towards the peak of their career, but suffering behind the scenes. As documented in the YouTube Original documentary, they had just severed ties with their abusive manager Lou Pearlman and were looking towards musical and financial freedom with ‘No Strings Attached’. ‘Bye Bye Bye’ led the charge for the album ‘No Strings Attached’, which would break the record for biggest... opening week sales in US history. With 2.4 million copies sold in one week, no one other than Adele has surpassed this achievement to this day. British boy-band Five had originally recorded and turned down ‘Bye Bye Bye’ on a trip to Sweden. This was much to the dismay of their former manager, Simon Cowell, who had been trying to break them in the US market. ‘Bye Bye Bye’ held the #1 spot in Australia for five weeks, until it was knocked off by local sensation, Bardot. 16.01.2022 | # Whilst the Sugababes 2.0 were well established by 2005, ‘Push The Button’ would push them to new career heights. Reaching #1 in the UK and #3 in Australia, it became their biggest hit to date. In Australia, it remains their only top ten hit and in the UK, it is the second highest selling song of their career, with 650,000 sales.... The lyrics were penned by the Sugababes with producer Dallas Austin based on real life events. Keisha was frustrated when another musician hadn’t been picking up her flirtations whilst they were recording in the US. The colourful music video saw the Sugababes each paired with a love interest who they try to not-so-subtly seduce. Behind-the-scenes, Heidi tells fans my mum couldn’t stop laughing watching the video, because they know each of us and they know they are so not our type of guys, and we’re just doing it as a joke. 11.01.2022 | # Like many modern hits, the heart of Modjo’s 2000 hit can be traced back to funk pioneers, Chic. The famous guitar throughout the song is sampled from Chic’s 1982 track ‘Soup for One’. The success of the track came out of the blue for French group Modjo, with ‘Lady’ hitting #1 in the UK and peaking at #10 here in Australia. The sudden fame was too much for them, eventually quitting music in 2003.... In 2010, Wynter Gordon & Static Revenger recorded a cover version of the track with new verses, whilst Austin Mahone & Pitbull would take a swing at it in 2017. The Modjo single has proven an enduring hit in the dance scene, with 120m views on YouTube and 100m streams on Spotify. (79 points)

08.01.2022 Our top new track of the week of course goes to Aussie Queen of Pop, Kylie Minogue. Stream 'Magic'! As voted by the Popchops Family.

05.01.2022 | # Kicking off the countdown are the Sugababes! The ‘Taller in More Ways’ era had seen a transition in group members, but with 2007’s ‘Change’, they showed an established Sugababes 3.0 line-up ready to deliver bops. Lead single ‘About You Now’ was penned by consistent hitmakers Cathy Dennis (‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head’, ‘Toxic’) and Dr Luke (‘4Ever’, ‘Girlfriend’).... The track became not only a #1 hit in several countries, but an airplay smash. At the end of 2009, the BBC announced that it was the 5th most played song on radio of the decade. With over 800k sales in the UK alone, it is the Sugababes highest selling single in their homeland. The single unfortunately failed to formally chart in Australia, peaking at a disappointing #57. In 2009, Nickelodeon star Miranda Cosgrove turned the song into a moderate US hit when she covered it. As of 2020, her version has about 3x as many views on YouTube as the Sugababes original. 04.01.2022 | # When Scandal’us formed at the end of season two of Popstars Australia in 2001, reality TV was very much in its infancy; it was a pre-Idol world. Previous winners Bardot had proven a success, so the pressure was on for Scandal’us to live up to certain expectations. With the combined free promotion on their TV show and by tapping into the maximalist pop sound of 2001, ‘Me, Myself & I’ was a surefire hit. The single debuted at #1 and held the top... slot for three weeks. The success of the group was however short-lived: their second single ‘Make Me Crazy’ unperformed (#30) and the band were soon dropped by the label. News.com.au spoke to the group members in 2015 about how they felt about that era and the break-up. Tamara Jaber recalled it was one of the best times of my life. She continues, our record deal was based on the TV show and when the show ended there was really no structure, manager or funds to let us continue. However, bandmate Danielle Scala didn’t feel quite the same, she recalls Tamara wanted to go solo, that was the whole reason (the band broke up). The other bandmates suggest the break-up was the result of a series of matters behind-the-scenes. Whether this was the reason for the break-up or not, Tamara did eventually go solo 4 years later in 2005. She scored two chart hits ‘Ooh Ahh’ (#13) and ‘Hard For Me’ (#23) before promptly disappearing again. (80 points)

03.01.2022 | # Whilst hit songs come and go, few really become part of the zeitgeist like Kelis’ signature 2003-04 hit ‘Milkshake’. Following a late 90s hit with ‘Caught Out There’, Kelis’ career was on rocky ground in the early new millennium. Her second album ‘Wanderland’ in 2001 wasn’t even released in the US and a rift between her and Virgin Records saw her leave and sign a new deal with Arista.... A rebranded, pop-friendly Kelis appeared in late 2003 with the lead single ‘Milkshake’ from the aptly titled ‘Tasty’ album. ‘Milkshake’ was produced and written by The Neptunes, Kelis believing your milkshake is a metaphor for your self-confidence. Whilst most are familiar with the Jake Nava directed music video set inside a milk-bar, an alternate video set on the streets was filmed and leaked in low quality. You can check it out in the comments section. The single spent a painful five weeks at #2 in Australia, held off #1 first by Outkast, and then by Shannon Noll. It’s fate was similar in the UK, where it held #2 for four weeks, stuck behind Michelle, and then LMC vs U2. (80 points)
