25.01.2022 Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful fathers in our lives. Photo from www.morrisminor.org.uk/the-morris-minor

25.01.2022 When considering scale and proportion in your space, keep patterns to a minimum and use smaller prints if your room is small. A larger room however can usually handle larger prints and more colours.

25.01.2022 Beautiful blue. Calming and peaceful, blue is the colour of communication, leadership and authority. It's nurturing and trusting, sincere and reserved. There are so many different tones of blue and each of these can effect the way your space feels. Blue and white offers a timeless, classic colour scheme. A zingy cobalt blue with a dash of red mixed in can be energetic and full of life. An aqua that is watery and transparent can offer peace and quiet but a vibrant version is quite chatty, fun and invigorating. A dark greyer blue can add drama and mood to your space. A pastel blue is peaceful, soft and sweet. How do you connect with the colour blue? Leave a comment below. If you would like some help to work more (or less) blue in to your space, please get in touch. Images found on Pinterest.

24.01.2022 Feeling grateful for family, cappuccino and sunshine (not to mention pink stripey umbrellas) at the start of this long weekend.

22.01.2022 Does anyone else love the stunning interiors in Nancy Meyers' movies? Really, what's not to love! Think 'Something's Gotta Give', 'It's Complicated', 'The Holiday' to name a few. Meyers has worked with the best in the industry to create sets for the characters in the movies that makes homes that most of us wouldn't mind living in. Here's an insight from Architectural Digest about the psychology behind why we find them so drool-worthy. #interiorinspiration

21.01.2022 Greige = grey + beige. The combination of grey and beige allows us to warm up our greys and tone down our beiges. Greige can be warm or cool and can look beautiful with classic white trims. It's a versatile neutral that works well in most rooms and looks great with reds, greens, and pinks. If youre concerned that grey is going to be too cool for your space, consider a greige as it might just give you that bit of added warmth. Take note of the undertone and the amount of grey it contains to determine the perfect hue for you. Left: Dulux Unforgettable. Photo by Lisa Cohen from Duluxaus. Top right: Dulux Feathersoft. 21.01.2022 Some alfresco dining inspiration for the long weekend (weather permitting). The metal Tolix chairs provide contrast to the all the natural elements of the garden scape. They make me think of galvanised watering cans, the kind that you might find in a Beatrix Potter tale. I would be tempted to add a few seat cushions for extra comfy-ness during a long, lazy lunch with friends. Would you? Image from House & Home. Photography by André Rider. Design by Les Ensembliers

21.01.2022 Youve probably heard about the study that found that prisoners in pink cells were less aggressive. This is the power of colour. Colours will evoke an emotion or convey a message every time we see them. Pink, basically red with white added, is a versatile hue. On the softer end of the scale, the nurturing embrace of powdery pinks sooth to create a peaceful calm. Punch up the intensity and things become much more playful and lively. This can help give a languishing interior a fun energy boost. Muted pinks can work to tone down the sweetness adding a lovely warm sophistication to a space. How does pink make you feel? 20.01.2022 With the weather warming up is your focus turning to sprucing up your outdoor areas? There's something to be said for creating inviting spaces to enjoy in your own backyard. Using materials that are made for the exterior elements, including candles and accessories to add mood and comfort, and decorating as you would for an indoor space are some of the handy tips in this article that inspires the creation of great outdoor living spaces at home.

20.01.2022 Who struggles with choosing white for their interior paint colour? If you answered yes, you are definitely not alone. Many people feel that it's one of the toughest paint colours to get right and there is a lot to consider. For example, do you need a warm white or a cooler white? How much natural light does the space receive? What is the style of your home? What are the colour tonings of other existing surfaces in the space such as floors, kitchen benchtops, window frames and... bathroom tiles? Check the undertone - or the colour the white throws (eg hints of blue, pink, yellow or green) and be sure to brush out a sample of the colour you like before you commit. It's a good idea to allow enough time to view the sample in different lights and at different times of day and night. This article from Dulux Australia offers a great starting place with an overview of the properties of various whites. What's your favourite white? 20.01.2022 Red can be stimulating, vibrant and exciting. The colour red can give you a burst of enthusiasm, motivate you into action and help you be more accepting of change. This energetic hue really stirs your passions. It raises your metabolism. It increases your heart rate. However if you are not a fan of red, you might find it intimidating or that it makes you angry. Do you have red in your home? Leave a comment below and have a great weekend.

18.01.2022 In recent months there have been downsides to our collaborative struggle against COVID-19. This week however I found a "silver-lining" with the opportunity to attend a major design trade show - virtually! DENFAIR 2.0 virtual design event is the evolution of DENFAIR, showcasing new design collections from 40 curated Australian and international brands. It's a wonderful way to keep up to date with new products, industry updates as well as be inspired by some truly amazing designers, products and companies. Imagine these cloud-like commercial pendant lights from one of the exhibitors, floating whimsically over your work space in the office. Dreamy! #denfair #virtualdesignevent

18.01.2022 Yellow tends to make people feel happy and energetic. It's the colour of optimism, confidence, extraversion, emotional strength, friendliness and creativity. Cheerful yellow grabs your attention and activates the mind, bringing joy, laughter and inspiration. This colour is permanently cheerful. Too much yellow can leave you feeling annoyed and restless so it's best used in small doses as an accent. Buttery or muted shades of this hue can also be easier to live with. Mustard, lemon, butter or gold - how does yellow make you feel? Leave a comment below, and have a great weekend. Images from Pinterest

17.01.2022 Repetition of shapes is pleasing to the eye and a great way to balance the proportions of a space. A touch of recurring patterns can unite differing elements within a room. Image found on Pinterest

16.01.2022 Taking a leaf (literally!) from Abigail Ahern's book, 'Colour' and finding inspiration from her unique take on using colour. Do any of her favourite, unexpected colour pairings here leave you reaching for a paint brush? Colour is so much fun.

16.01.2022 Dulux has released their colour forecasts for 2021 highlighting three different palettes. Retreat, Nourish and Reset are set to evoke familiarity and comfort and create a sense of renewal while holding on to nostalgic elements in your home. This doesn't sound half bad, does it? But how do you interpret that through paint colours? Heres a sneaky peak of the Nourish palette: it draws on nature to emphasise tactility and the need for comfort. It looks to rounded forms and soft objects to blend the identity between decor and furniture. With a renewed appreciation for natural beauty the home can be complemented with simple, textural and nurturing hues while you admire your tranquil surrounds. Buff neutrals, soft olive and muted ochre capture our renewed appreciation for natural beauty by offering soothing moments of stillness.

15.01.2022 Cloud busting last weekend and capturing this moment of swirling colour and light. In interiors, grey - and its lovely laid-back nature - can be thought of as the quiet achiever. Often considered a neutral, there are many subtleties to grey. It takes on the personality of what surrounds it, as well as the attributes of its tone. When choosing a grey, look to its undertone. For example, the grey paint you bring home may end up looking much more blue, or green, or purple, or b...rown, than you thought, depending on what tints are in its makeup. This dreamy skyscape inspires a palette of moody, ethereal, watery blue-greys, both light and airy and dark and dramatic. These paint colours show undertones of blue. They will pair well with cool, crisp whites such as Dulux Lexicon Quarter. Feel free to revisit my earlier post about Pantone’s 2021 Colour of the Year where Illuminating Yellow is proposed as the perfect partner to Ultimate Grey: https://www.facebook.com/popofcolourinteriors/posts/212678100419571

15.01.2022 One highlight from the line up at Denfair was an interview with Sami Ruotsalainen, the Helsinki-based ceramics and glassware designer behind Marimekko's 'Oiva' tableware. He said he has been working with this collection for over 10 years and that his designs have been focused on creating items that will be relevant for many years to come. He's worked his designs to be able to stand alone but also sit together with other Marimekko patterns, offering a collection that is funct...ional yet playful. He explained that Finland is a country located between Sweden and Russia, and that Finnish design tends to feature the minimalistic functionality of the Nordic design aesthetic together with the rich, bold, ornamental influences of its eastern neighbours. Next year Marimekko, whose aim is to bring joy to people's everyday lives through long-lasting, quality, timeless design, turns 70. Sami hinted that the new collection, which has been inspired by camping and close-by getaways that can be found close to home, will feature warm summery tones with shades of brown and beige and complemented with warm corals, oranges and dashes of yellow. 13.01.2022 It is THE BEST thing ever seeing happy clients after working with them to reinvigorate their home. Thank you so much for this lovely feedback! "My house needed a makeover and, with her care, commitment and attention to detail, Rachel combined colour, furnishings, fabrics, design and style to create such uplifting and comforting spaces. These chairs are a focal point in the living room and I love them. Thanks to Rachel I enjoy this space every day." Philip, Toowong.

10.01.2022 Great to hear product updates from Caesarstone Australia and Polytec this morning at The Build and Design Centre. Loving the five new colours from the Caesarstone 2020 Dark Collection. And also loving Polytec's versatile Steccawood decorative battens. So much to love!

10.01.2022 Really enjoyed Denfair 2.0s interview with German furniture designer, Sebastian Herkner about his designs for French luxury lifestyle brand Ligne Roset. I love that his Taru settee has two faces with the mixing of materials and colours allowing the upholstered rear view to be as beautiful as the front view.

10.01.2022 When choosing colours, we mostly tend to pick ones that we wont tire of too quickly. I really love the colours Carlene talks about in this article. What colours do you lean towards when you are aiming for something that will stand the test of time? Leave a comment below.

09.01.2022 With a bold sense of renewal we welcome the new normal with open arms. Our gaze towards the outside and our own interior worlds has changed. The Reset palette from Duluxs 2021 colour forecast, introduces key colours to help balance a neutral space. Uplifting hues of blue-green and energetic reds offset refreshing whites and neutrals. Life may feel a little slower, but each moment is enriched by building new connections with those around us. A subtle playful retro influence c...an be seen in styling and colour combinations. Stay upbeat with the stronger colours in the Reset palette to lift interiors and brighten your outlook. Vibrant pops of retro colour hint at 70s nostalgia, and an eclectic mix of old and new mesh together to energise your home. Infuse furniture, objects and mementos to add character to your interior to personalise your space. Family living focuses on furniture that is functional, durable and generous in shape and form. Layering quilted fabrics can offer extra cosiness and comfort. White is versatile and harmonises beautifully with a variety of surfaces, balancing cool concrete against warm timber. Take a moment to reflect and blur the lines where your interior meets your exterior, with the help of botanicals, eclectic furniture, and timber materials. How do the colours in this palette make you feel? Leave a comment below. Photos from Dulux Australia

09.01.2022 Trends come and go. They are fascinating to consider and its always fun see what the forecasts suggest. Trends are created from our reaction to world events. It is interesting to see what direction these are taking, especially with regard to the current upheaval and uncertainty around the global pandemic, and the fact that we have spent a lot of time in our homes this year. One thing is for certain from this article - a pop of yellow can absolutely bring joy to your home.

08.01.2022 So, watchers of The Block, what did you think about last nights winner of Guest Bedroom Week? In this year's series each house is from a different era with contestants required to incorporate their houses particular era in their renovating transformations. The judges seem to be taking this very seriously. The winning guest bedroom was in the 1950s house. However there was some discussion whether or not the room looked more from the 1960's and 1970's even though in the end ...it was decided it was 'late 1950's' inspired. Last nights show has got me thinking. What exactly were the defining style elements for a bedroom in the 1950s? And how would you use these to create a fresh take for the savvy contemporary buyer-to-be in Brighton VIC today? This will be an interesting challenge to watch as the contestants continue working through the rooms in their houses. By the way, do you feel like this 1956 lady of the house after making your bed in the morning, or is that just me? Leave a comment below. Photo found on Pinterest.

08.01.2022 With the ever prevalent threat of the pandemic surrounding us, its important to take a moment now and then to remain calm and positive. Sometimes it can be helpful to change the view you have on things. Heres some inspiration to do just that. Perhaps a getaway this weekend - even if it may only be in our imaginations. With views like these, furniture and decor can definitely be the supporting act, dont you think?

03.01.2022 Today we were treated to a public holiday, despite the fact that COVID-19 has cancelled the Brisbane show. I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to take some time out with the family and to appreciate Mother Nature on such a beautiful day. Her amazing colours, textures and patterns never fail to inspire!

03.01.2022 When designing your space, leaving some negative space above and around furniture and accessories will allow the eye to rest as it moves around the room. By leaving some surfaces uncovered the room will feel less cluttered and let you to focus on the highlights. Photo by Orlova Maria

02.01.2022 It was an absolute pleasure to assist Virginia Bishop Interiors with the exterior paint colour scheme for her client's beautiful Queenslander. When considering a colour scheme for your property, one thing to keep in mind is the style or architecture to ensure that the colours will enhance its best features. On a property like this, the decorative trims and pretty features are special and deserve to be celebrated. The soft whites, even though subtle in contrast, together with ...the charcoal trims, allow this house's character to shine forth in a most inviting way. The colours work to refresh the building in a contemporary way but they are also timeless and will stay relevant for years to come. Do you need some assistance with a new colour scheme to bring out the best in your property? If so, please get in touch. John Downs Photography. #exteriorpaintcolours #colourconsultantbrisbane

01.01.2022 Beautiful inspiration this morning from Elisa Carmichael, textile artist and Ngugi woman from the Quandamooka People of Moreton. Her colourful, handwoven sculptural dresses made from Ungaire (swamp reeds), jersey, twine, ghost net and digitally-printed textiles are the feature of a new solo exhibition at the Queensland Museum.
