25.01.2022 Do black cockatoos visit your property? South Coast Natural Resource Management is undertaking a 3 year project to reverse the decline of black cockatoos on the... south coast. The region is home to three types of black cockatoo Carnaby’s, Baudin’s and forest red-tailed. This project will support farmers to maintain and improve the habitat values of black cockatoo nesting and feeding sites, and include the installation of artificial nesting boxes, fencing off remnant vegetation to exclude stock, revegetation for feeding, controlling pest species that compete for tree hollows, and weed control around key habitat. If your property is regularly visited by black cockatoos and could benefit from some of the activities listed, please complete this survey as an expression of interest to find out more about the project. 24.01.2022 Want to keep counting the birds in your backyard? We’ve loved hearing how so many of you have enjoyed taking part in the #AussieBirdCount. Maybe you’ve even lea...rnt how to identify a new species or two! If you're already missing counting birds, why not get involved in our Birds in Backyards program? Birds in Backyards is a research and education project led by our Urban Birds team and it’s all about the birds in YOUR backyard! Unlike the Aussie Backyard Bird Count which is only once a year, the Birds in Backyards program has quarterly seasonal counts. The spring count ends in just a few days, but the summer count kicks off in December and goes until the end of January. All you need to do is a 20 min survey (just like the Aussie Backyard Bird Count!) and tell us about your garden and the birds that visit it. By doing so, you’re helping the Birds in Backyards team understand more about what habitat attracts different bird species. These findings are then posted on the website which has a wealth of info on planting your own bird-friendly garden, bird baths, nest boxes and more! To get involved, check out: https://birdlife.org.au/all-about-birds/birds-in-backyards Follow the Birds in Backyards team on Instagram: @birdsinbackyards and Twitter: @UrbanBirdsOz or join the Birds in Backyards Facebook group. a Pale-headed Rosella munches on the seedpods of a Grevillea, by Shanna Bignell @feathertailpics Thanks for tagging us #birdlifeoz, Shanna!

09.01.2022 LESS-PLASTIC JULY 2020 Here we go! Another year, another July trying to ditch single-use plastic in our lives! I think a lot of people get discouraged by the ...'Plastic-Free' tag, and I totally get it. A lot of family and friends have told me "I will never manage to get rid of all the plastic, so why bother", and find it very demotivating. We have talked many times about how we don't believe in perfection, so forget about "trash jars" and all that, and join us in some truly achievable goals for this month! Because that's what matters, to do whatever each and every one of us can, according to our means and personal situations! How it works: Take the pledge to decrease plastic from your life as much as you can this month and tell us in the comments one thing you are committed to reduce - it needs to come in plastic packaging or made with plastic. Tag a friend who you'd like to share your pledge with and that would make you accountable! Share your journey by tagging @earthbits in your posts and stories throughout the month, and the best photos will win free amazing goodies from our site! Bring it on July, bye bye plastic!

06.01.2022 Western Australia is renowned for its vast and spectacular natural landscapes which attract bushwalkers, trail runners and outdoor enthusiasts from across Australia and around the world. The WA Hiking Strategy is the first of its kind in the country and will assist Western Australia to develop safe and sustainable hiking experiences. It will help guide government investment and lead to stronger community development and economic outcomes. See here: https://www.dlgsc.wa.gov.au//wa-hiking-strategy-bushwalkin

04.01.2022 We are happy they are thinking of the Porongurup area as part of the Great Southern Recovery Investment Plan to recover from COVID-19. Unfortunately we are concerned about the "$12.78 million to establish trail towns and centres to service existing and new trails in the Great Southern region including the realignment of Munda Biddi Trail through William Bay National Park to Denmark, new trails in the Valley of the Giants to Walpole, new and upgraded trails in Torndirrup National Park and new and upgraded trails at Castle Rock in the Porongurup National Park" (see https://www.wa.gov.au//Great%20Southern%20Recovery%20Plan.) We strongly believe that bikes don't belong in our heritage listed national parks.
