23.01.2022 Wow, things are rapidly changing at the new look Young Parent Centre. There are some great new learning spaces, training kitchen, staff offices, meeting/ interview and counselling rooms as well as additional bathroom facilities. It really will be a new and improved state of the art facility for teenage mums. If you know of a young mum under 21 that needs to continue their education whilst their baby is in our fully ACECQA accredited childcare centre. 19.01.2022 Parents, Carers, Guardians & Students - Please read this important update about mobile phones before school starts back next week. Following years of requesting students to use their mobile phones appropriately, with limited success, it has been decided that student mobile phone use at school will no longer be allowed. Students will be asked to turn off their mobile phone and put it away before they enter the school gate, and to not bring it out until they leave school at the... end of the day. Smart watches need to be turned off or switched to airplane mode. If a phone, tablet or earbuds are seen by staff, students will be asked to hand these in. They may be collected again at the end of the day. Should a student ignore this code for a second time, the device will be confiscated and kept at School until it can be collected by the parent/guardian. Continued non-compliance with this code will result in a parent/guardian interview. Not having a mobile phone will be tough for many to begin with, but research has shown that this initiative will eventually reduce conflict, increase work output and give students a break from what has become addictive behaviour, that of constantly checking their phones.

Our small 25 place centre currently offers a ...unique style of childcare to our staff babies and those of the schools young parents. 11.01.2022 Port Schools YPC stand at the AYPPN conference in Maroochydore, Brisbane is certainly getting some interest. Yesterday Mike sat on a panel with National Childre...n’s Commissioner Megan Mitchell and Minister for Womens Interest Di Farmer along with Principals Simon Riley & Jan Marshall. The several hundred person audience grilled the panel on the work they do with young mums as well as picking their brains about how the centres operate. Michelle is in the spotlight today as key note speaker on domestic violence, a topic far to prevalent with our cohort of young mums across Australia. At the end of the conference there will be several recommendations that will be put forward to parliamentary ministers from various directorates that will aim to improve health, educational, housing and women’s related issues that will hopefully improve services and funding for young mums and the challenges they face.

04.01.2022 Wishing our deputy Mike Gilbert and Manager Michelle Forsyth all the best for the symposium tomorrow and Friday. Michelle will be presenting a 45min session on domestic violence and Mike will be sitting on a Q & A panel touching on policy and how our Young Parent Centre began. We know they will represent our Centre well.

04.01.2022 What a great day, National Children’s Commissioner Megan Mitchell flew over from Sydney to meet Port’s young mum’s and have a tour of the school meeting staff a...nd students. Megan’s role with the Australian Human Rights Commission sees her consult, talk and discuss youth related issues across Australia, making recommendations and taking on board the students thoughts and comments. Port Principal, Deputy, Chair and YPC Manager were delighted to host her for a dinner in Fremantle last night followed by the half day visit at the school.
