13.01.2022 SOFTBALL GRITTY HILLS COME THROUGH By Robert Laidlaw IN A TENSE AND exciting Premier League softball clash, Hills held on for a well-deserved 3-2 victory over t...op team Sturt, behind a gritty pitching performance from Chantelle Lewis. Hills was missing key player Georgia Hood, while the Falcons’ Bel White wasn’t available, as these two players were at the AIS with Walkerville’s Chelsea Robinson for the Olympic selection camp. It gave Lewis her chance to shine and she put in a winning performance, similar to her effort in the recent State Country Championships’ gold medal game. Over six innings Lewis conceded nine hits and two walks for four strikeouts, while taking two catches and making two assists. The Heat drew first blood when, in the opening inning, Amber Hood walked, Madi Rocher laid down a safe bunt, followed by a passed ball, with Hood scoring on Alex Mackay’s grounder. Neve Adams walked for Sturt in the second frame, advanced on Georgia Burr’s single and came home on Sarah Tonkin’s hit to leftfield, to make it 1-1. A big double by Lauren Christensen started a rally for Hills in the third dig, with Peyton Daniels hitting a single to rightfield and Dani Perez loading the bases with a bunt, for Abi Jorgensen to hit a two-run single up the middle, to give the Heat a 3-1 lead. Sturt finally struck back with a run in the fifth, when Rachel Tonkin walked, Millie Fidge bunted and Lauren Jury had a RBI hit to make it a one-run ballgame. Still trailing by a run at the top of the sixth and final inning, the Falcons looked like doing some damage when their first batter Indigo Beck de Silva led off with a single. But Lewis then struck out the next two batters before hits to the Tonkin sisters, Sarah and Rachel loaded the bases. With the game in the balance, a foul pop-up was caught and the Heat was victorious. THE BATTLE FOR FOURTH is still on, after Port Adelaide easily beat Walkerville 7-0. With five rounds remaining the Magpies have an easier run home, while Walkerville hold a percentage advantage. Both play the top three teams and the bottom-placed Seacombe, but Port has an extra game against the Tigers, while the Cats play Hills twice. The story of the Magpies’ win was the pitching of Johanna Grauer, who conceded just one hit for seven strikeouts, although conceding four walks, but no Walkerville runner advanced past second base. Port scored its first run in the second frame, when Taylor Chillingworth doubled, Ella Forrester singled and Hannah Cameron hit a grounder for a RBI. Then in the fourth, Forrester tripled, Cameron hit a sac fly, and, after two outs, Megan Williams and Emilia Dolphin singled, with Williams coming home on an error. Hits to Williams, Jess Neves and Gemma Letton, and Grauer’s two-run double, made it 7-0 and the mercy rule was reached in the bottom of the sixth dig. WITH STEPH TRZCINSKI perfect from the circle, West Torrens was untroubled in beating Seacombe 7-0. Trzcinski pitched five frames for no hits, no walks and eight strikeouts, in another stunning performance. The Eagles started strongly with three runs in the bottom of the opening frame, after Jordan Harris led off with a safe bunt, Faith Pickard smashed a triple, Karah Schultz hit a RBI single and scored after an error. From collecting the shortest hit of the game in the first dig, Harris then belted the longest in the second inning, when she deposited the ball over the left-centrefield fence, for West Torrens to go 4-0 up small ball or longball, Jordan is adept at both! The highlights of a three-run Eagles fourth were hits to Trzcinski, Sophie Hoyle and Mary Fuss. While the majority of Tigers struggled with the bat, Jess Maslin can consider herself unlucky, hitting a fly ball to leftfield the only Seacombe-hit ball to leave the infield and lined out to third base. * * * * * RESULTS West Torrens d Seacombe 7-0 (hits: WT Lambert 2, Hoyle 2, Pickard, Schultz, Trzcinski, Knuckey, Fuss, Beal; Seacombe nil. WP: S. Trzcinski; LP: A. Munroe). Port Adelaide d Walkerville 7-0 (hits: Port Letton 3, Forrester 2, Williams 2, Neves, Grauer, Chillingworth, Dolphin; Walkerville Dale. WP: J. Grauer; LP: R. Moore). Hills d Sturt 3-2 (hits: Hills A. Hood, Rocher, Christensen, Daniels, Perez, Jorgensen; Sturt S. Tonkin 2, Cameron 2, R. Tonkin, Jury, Adams, Beck de Silva, Burr. WP: C. Lewis; LP: Z. Adams). Premiership points: Sturt 29, West Torrens 26, Hills 23, Walkerville 18, Port Adelaide 18, Seacombe 6. See more
