25.01.2022 The museum hosts a lot of groups and bus tours through the year. Last month we had a group of 40 Probus group members from Korumburra. For groups were always happy to organise lunch such as a terrific feed of some of the best fish & chips youll find, tea & coffee, and a tour of Gippslands Regional Maritime Museum. We were delighted to have Probus Korumburra and hope you had a great time.

23.01.2022 Dear visitors, despite the latest government announcements regarding the reopening of all museums, our museum will remain closed until September. We normally close over winter except for weekends. This year however, the complexity of managing social distancing with the many small rooms and narrow hallways of our beautiful heritage building, make it too difficult to manage. Our volunteers are also predominately in the covid vulnerable category and putting them at risk was not responsible. We look forward to seeing you all in September and in the meantime we will be doing working bees and putting a few new things together.
23.01.2022 If you are looking for things to do over the Easter weekend why not head down to Port Albert and Yarram. We have so much to offer visitors to the area. Lush rai...n forests, beautiful beaches, great fishing, the fabulous Heesco Mural Trail, and history galore can be found at the Port Albert Maritime Museum and of course our Alberton Cemetery Walking Tours! Our last tour for this season will be on Saturday April 3rd @5:30. Message or call Sandi to make a booking on 0403819183. See more

17.01.2022 Port Albert Art Gallery - latest painting by resident artist Warren Curry. Warren has just finished this oil painting of the P S Oberon. 17.01.2022 UPDATE: NYE FIREWORKS @ Port Albert CANCELLED There will be markets on however and the Coast Guard will still be holding their event.
16.01.2022 We got caught a little by surprise when the government changed its plans for museums opening. They have not however updated the industry specific restrictions yet which deal with things such as whether we have to have a workforce bubble, meaning our volunteers couldn’t work elsewhere. Hopefully that will be updated this week and we can finalise our COVIDSafe Plan. Museums are tricky things with COVID restrictions not least because most of our exhibits can’t be cleaned partic...ularly our library & archives. This will have all sorts of implications in terms of how these can be accessed which we’re still going through in conjunction with Museums Australia Victoria. We will keep you up to date as we know but we’re not open yet and it’s fair to say we won’t be open until December at the earliest.

11.01.2022 If I am the Captain of a boat then I suggest you dont board the vessel. Most likely we will sink. I will press the wrong button. Pull the wrong lever. Press t...he "dont press this button" button. Laugh nervously with a cheery outlook and still think we can make it despite already taking on water. But if we make it, and if I can gracefully get us to a jetty, then I will take you to the Port Albert Maritime Museum. 10.01.2022 Maritime Museum, former Bank of Victoria. Port Alberts first Bank of Victoria (1856) originally operated from a two-storey prefabricated iron store building ac...ross the road in Victoria St. A more central site was later procured and the present stuccoed brick building was completed in 1862. At its peak in 1861, ships were taking away 1000 ozs of gold a week. Gold from Omeo, Grant and Crooked River diggings were stored in its vault during the 1860s, and from Walhalla during 1870s, awaiting shipment to Melbourne. As a result of the widespread depression of the early 1890s rationalisation of bank premises took place and the bank closed its Port Albert branch in Oct 1895. The shire of Alberton purchased the building in 1971 and it was developed at the Port Albert Maritime Museum. The building is a complete example of early conservative Classical revival architecture. The splayed corner, quoining, cornered parapet and pedimented entrance create a well composed and fittingly grand corner building for a township that was expected to continue to grow well beyond its eventuality. With the exception of the external colour scheme and the adjacent building to the north, the former bank is original both internally and externally. See more
10.01.2022 J & G McKenzie Store & Gowrie Guest House, former Drapery and detached residence. Built in 1855 by John Roberts (Draper) it was purchased by James & George McKe...nzie during the 1880s. The shop has undergone superficial alterations c1900 and has been changed substantially at least twice. Its alignment to the street and verandah contribute to the commercial precinct of the port. The residence itself is the second oldest house known in Port Albert. The steep hipped roof and brick corniced chimneys relate to the early building of the port. See more

07.01.2022 On tonight on SBS featuring Kat Stewy in Port Albert. For people interested in researching Port Albert Family history, the museum has extensive records including a wonderful 3 volume set by volunteer Gwen OCallaghan called From Clonmel to Federation These books list pretty much anyone who had anything to do with Port Albert from its formation through to Federation. Copies are available to buy or you can copy pages. We also have a wealth of information about and from differ...ent community groups, schools and businesses in the area. The museum is closed for winter but we look forward to seeing people in September to learn more about their family origins in the area. Repost @kat_stewy So this was interesting! Very honoured to be on @sbs_australia #whodoyouthinkyouare this week (Tuesday 7.30pm) It was a much more affecting experience than I expected.

05.01.2022 The Port Albert Maritime Museum remains closed due to Victorian Government restrictions. The current Roadmap will allow museums to re-open under heavy restrictions once Regional Victoria reaches the "Last Step" and to fully re-open once we are "COVID Normal". Due to the nature of the heavy restrictions for museums in the "Last Step", it is unlikely that we will be able to open except on an occasional basis for groups and perhaps some weekends. Because of our small rooms a...nd narrow corridors, it is very difficult to control visitor flow whilst maintaining the necessary social distancing. We will however publish any dates we can open during the "Last Step" phase as soon as we know when that will be. Aside from that, we're afraid it won't be back to normal opening hours until we are at "COVID Normal". Hopefully that won't be too far away. We look forward to seeing you then.
05.01.2022 October is history month, and Gippsland is steeped in history. Take the Alberton Cemetery for example. It dates back to the early 1820s and there are over 1400 ...records of people buried in the grounds. Earlier this year the cemetery was featured on ‘Who do you think you are?’ as Bairnsdale born actor Kat Stewart retraced her family’s heritage and found that her great grandfather was buried there. Up until March this year, Port Albert Progress Association was running tours of the cemetery, which attracted a number of visitors to the area. The tours included a history lesson on the pioneers of the local area, such as Agnes Gellion, the tragic story of the Howden family and the first burial of a European settler Robert McClure in 1842. While the tours are not happening at present, visitors are welcome to take a wander through this beautifully maintained cemetery, situated on the banks of the Albert River, and immerse themselves in the history of the area. Alberton Cemetery is around 10 minutes from Yarram on the way to Port Albert. #lovegippsland See more
