22.01.2022 When your child jumps, they develop coordination and balance whilst strengthening leg muscles. They are also using both sides of their body at the same time to coordinate the movement. Jumping is a fundamental movement in gross motor development. Therefore, Friday (23rd Oct) and Monday’s (26th Oct) Fit to Learn sessions will be all about JUMPING. Did you know it will also be FREE, as it is Children’s Week!

18.01.2022 Don’t forget that tomorrow is our last FREE ‘Fit to Learn’ session to celebrate Children’s Week. We are focussing on ‘balancing’ and we will have some equipment/activities set up to practice our balancing skills. Balance is really important at all ages and stages - from a baby learning to balance their body to sit and not topple over, to a toddler learning to bend over to pick up a dropped toy or a preschooler balancing on one leg to kick a ball. ... It is essential to all movement, and it develops with developing postural control. So come along and see some practical ideas that you can also do at home!

10.01.2022 Do your children have an emerging hand preference? Be assured that hand preference emerges gradually over time between 2-4 years of age, as a child has exposure to using both hands in a variety of activities. By 5-6 years of age, an established hand preference is usually present. However, children who may have some motor delays can often take a bit longer to develop hand preference and they may continue to swap. These children might have difficulty crossing their midlin...e, using two hands together and their hands or arms might get tired (and they therefore swap to give the other arm a rest)! It is important that children are not forced to use one hand over another, but are gently encouraged to use both. A preferred hand is important in the long term, so that they develop greater skill and dexterity to be able to handle increased complex tasks. If you are unsure if your child has an emerging preference, I would simply start by observing your child do a variety of different tasks over several days/weeks. The summer holidays might be an ideal time! You can do this by consistently presenting the tool/object/task to your child at their midline to see which hand they prefer to reach out and use. Notice whether they have an emerging ‘helping hand’ and an emerging ‘doing hand’. Brushing teeth, drawing, cutting, throwing a ball or using a bat are a few activities you could observe. If you have any questions or concerns, remember we have our own Occupational Therapist here at PACC who can guide you in the right (or left) direction! See more

04.01.2022 Have you noticed that toddlers have a desire to always be on the move? Movement allows children’s brains (specifically their cerebellum - the area responsible for movement) to continue to grow and develop. The cerebellum, otherwise known as the motor cortex is part of the brain that experiences rapid growth between 0-2 years or the first few years of life. This explains why our toddlers, once they get moving, are ‘on the go’ at every opportunity! ... For all those households with a toddler or little one, it can be a ‘full on’ time chasing around after them, so we hope that today you are able to sit back,...pause,...breathe and recharge for a moment or two.

08.12.2021 The start of the 2022 school year has been adjusted to minimise the peak of COVID cases and help keep our community as safe as possible. The new staged return t...o school prioritises face-to-face learning for our littlest learners preschoolers, receptions and year 1s, who would find online learning a big challenge. Our year 2 through to 6s will learn online during those first 2 weeks. It’s the first year of secondary school for our year 7 and 8 students, and an important final year for our year 12s all will be welcomed back face-to-face. Our year 9, 10 and 11 students will learn online. We’re planning to have all year levels back in school, learning face-to-face on Monday 14 February 2022. Parents who are required to attend work and don’t have appropriate supervision for their child can choose to send their child to school and preschool throughout this two week period, including the preparation days. Children in vulnerable situations will also be able to come to school and preschool.
