23.01.2022 When the bunnies start eating the trees that have recently been planted on our Rail Trail, it is GAME ON! Around 50 trees have been lost to the rabbits, and the worst area is around the cutting, which is approximately 600 metres east of the Princes Highway Port Fairy. This week our volunteer group tried to win the battle by fumigating some of the holes.

21.01.2022 UPDATE FITNESS CIRCUIT Preparing for the concrete slab and curb around the fitness circuit. The concrete slab is scheduled for tomorrow. All going well, this project will be finished Friday!

21.01.2022 Interested in Riding A Bike to keep fit? Try before you buy. Did you know that the Port Fairy-Warrnambool Rail Trail Committee has a number of bikes available for people to use on the Rail Trail? These bikes are either step through or high bar frames and have six speed gears. This is all that you will need when riding the Trail. If you would like to borrow a bike to try out riding as a way of keeping fit, please call Brian on 0417 535 530 to arrange a time to collect a bike. A donation towards the maintenance of these bikes would be appreciated. A ‘Borrowers Form’ will have to be completed and signed before any bike can be used.

20.01.2022 MOYNE SIDING PICNIC Some rode, some drove, but a wonderful evening was enjoyed by all who attended the Rail Trail picnic at Moyne Siding on Sunday 12th Jan. Lots of old fashioned games for the kids and adults provided much fun and laughter.

12.01.2022 HELP US TO RE-OPEN THE GILLES STREET PEDESTRIAN CROSSING The Gilles Street crossing on the Warrnambool rail line has been fenced off and closed to pedestrians since August last year and still remains cut off. This crossing provides an important connection from the Warrnambool town centre to the Lake Pertobe precinct, and beyond to the foreshore and South Warrnambool.... Please complete the petition to the Victorian Government Legislative Council that requests the re-opening of the Gilles Street pedestrian crossing near the Warrnambool Railway Station: https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au//view-e-p/details/12/198 Legislative Council E-Petitions - parliament.vic.gov.au The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to re-open the Gilles Street pedestrian crossing as part of a designated path network from the Warrnambool town centre and the Warrnambool Railway Station, providing access to the Port Fairy to Warrnambool Rail Trail, and the Lake Pertobe precinct. www.parliament.vic.gov.au The petition closes 28 May 2020. NB: The petition refers to the Warrnambool to Dennington rail corridor, which is the official name.

12.01.2022 6000 MORE TREES AND SHRUBS FOR THE TRAIL This year the Rail Trail Friends Group and a number of community groups will be planting 6,000 trees and shrubs along the section of the Rail Trail between Port Fairy and Illowa as well as carrying out some direct seeding. The planting will not only improve the ambience of the trail but will break up the strong southerlies and make riding and walking the trail easier. In total, approximately 45,000 trees, shrubs and grasses have been planted. Recently the RSL Active Veterans and families spent the morning planting 670 trees to the East of Bega. All volunteers socially distancing, masks and in family groups, to comply with current Covid-19 regulations. A great effort to all volunteers involved in planting and continuing the maintenance of the Rail Trail.

11.01.2022 UPDATE FITNESS CIRCUIT! The final of the rubber matting was laid today, and WOW, does it look great!! Still a few minor things to complete, such as finishing/cleaning the surrounds, so the fence will stay in place until it is finished and safe. Stay tuned for the opening. A wonderful effort from all those involved in making this happen.
