15.01.2022 ‘In search of Doctor Vaughan ‘ a Portland Neighbourhood House Portland WorkSkills initiative. More on Doctor Vaughan the author. This time ‘Doctor in Papua’. Published in 1974, it covers his early years, medical training and the time he and his family spent in Papua, the bottom part of what is today Papua New Guinea. He served as doctor at the Kwato Mission from 1935 until early 1942. The book is an easy read, full of incidents and anecdotes. The medical set-up was primit...ive and he often had to make his own equipment. He performed some challenging operations under difficult conditions. The Vaughans departed Papua in early 1942, a step or two ahead of the Japanese invaders. The hardcover copy was published by the prestigious firm of Rigby Limited; the softcover version was printed in Scotland by the Saint Andrew Press. Both 180 pages and with plenty of good illustrations. Want a copy? Usually plenty of hardcover copies on eBay but be careful of copies going at a low price - but with big shipping or postage costs.

13.01.2022 ‘In search of Doctor Vaughan (1906-2000) ‘ a Portland Neighbourhood House Portland WorkSkills initiative. Today, a little about Doctor Vaughan’s later years. In 1979, he and Freda returned to Australia to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends. Their intention was to return to India but Freda became ill. She remained in Australia and he returned to India to finalise matters there. Melbourne became their home for a number of years. ‘Flying Freda’,... after whom ‘Vaughan’s Leap’ at the bottom of Cape Nelson Road was named, died in 1985. She loomed large in the life of Portland during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Many people still have memories of her great presence and big personality. Doctor Vaughan returned to Portland for a time after Freda’s death, living in a residence in Findlay Street, opposite Legacy Lodge. From its driveway, he routinely and assertively reversed across to the other side of Wellington Road in order to avoid the inconvenience of a u-turn! Later, he moved to Melbourne, returning to Portland from time to time. See more

13.01.2022 ‘In search of Doctor Vaughan ‘ a Portland Neighbourhood House Portland WorkSkills initiative. A little more on Doctor Vaughan, the author, and his other book the ‘Portland Sketchbook’ published by Rigby Limited in 1975. It consisted of numerous Portland and district illustrations each accompanied by an historical or geographical commentary. One Graham Hawley did the sketches; Doctor Vaughan provided the text. Similar books were produced for many settlements, cities and regions around Australia. All to a formula but very effective and they sold well. Made of 64 pages and 30 different sketches and commentaries. Where can we get a copy? Perhaps the bookshop in Bentinck Street? Borrow a copy off a friend? (Treat it as a ‘boomerang’). Or, when the time comes, try the Library.

12.01.2022 ‘Do you remember when....?’ A Portland Neighbourhood House - Portland WorkSkills initiative Do you remember the opening of the re-developed Port of Portland and the celebrations? The official opening took place on Saturday 19 November 1960, with the ‘stage’ being the bridge of the warship HMAS Quiberon, There was a week of events and festivities. Works at the port throughout the 1950s transformed it into a versatile, modern, all-weather international port. Pic 1 - The official port opening ceremony 19 November 1960. 02.01.2022 ‘Do you remember the ..........?’ A Portland Neighbourhood HousePortland WorkSkills initiative. Do you remember the ‘Needle Factory’? Everett Products, generally known as the Needle Factory, was established in 1946 as a post-World War II decentralisation initiative. Located in Beverley Street, it was a major Portland manufacturing industry and at times employed more than 50 people. It was a modern, state-of-the art industry and for many years a Portland icon. Any VIP or dignitary visiting Portland toured the Needle Factory. It declined from the 1970s onwards, in the face of Australian and overseas competition. The name was changed to Portland Surgical Products in 1981. The business celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2006 and closed a year later.

02.01.2022 ‘Do you remember when...?’ A Portland Neighbourhood House - Portland WorkSkills initiative Do you remember the Bicentennial year of 1988, when some eleven Tall Ships involved in the re-enactment of the First Fleet, visited Portland 24 28 March? In the morning of the day they arrived there was heavy fog. Later, however, ‘the ships, like phantoms, appeared from the fog into brilliant sunshine.’ As well, the huge passenger liner QE II performed a ‘sail past’ in the distance. For many, the Ploughed Field was the place to be on that day. Pic 1 PSE and postmark Pic 2 Certificate/program

01.01.2022 ‘Do you remember the ..........?’ A Portland Neighbourhood HousePortland WorkSkills initiative. Do you remember the 1970 Royal Visit? It included many Australian settlements and cities. 01.01.2022 ‘In search of Doctor Vaughan (1906-2000)’ a Portland Neighbourhood House-Portland WorkSkills initiative. -In 1969, Doctor Vaughan got the opportunity to take a break from his Portland medical practice, and did so. For several weeks he became the ship’s doctor of the ‘Triaster’, a vessel carrying phosphate from the Pacific island of Nauru to Geelong. -From 1973 to 1979 he, with Freda, was a missionary doctor at Panchangani, India, inland from Bombay or Mumbai. There, in his words, he dealt with ‘cuts, coughs, infections and the occasional emergency’. -His experiences at sea and in India are considered in his autobiographical book, Doc, I feel Crook.
