17.01.2022 Extinction Rebellion’s Worthwhile Conversation Portlanders were introduced to local members of Extinction Rebellion (XR) last Saturday. The Eco-warriors were guests of Portland Labor Party as one of this year’s Worthwhile Conversations held at Portland Library. XR’s Alan Northey explained that life on Earth is in crisis. He claims that climate is changing faster than scientists have predicted and that this will result in. biodiversity loss and crop failure. Mr Northey ...believes that this will lead to social and ecological collapse if governments do not act soon. In a year which started with some of the hottest temperatures on record, and widespread bush fires, Mr Northey claims that we have a moral duty to rebelwhatever our politics. He explained that salvation from climate emergency will not come just from individuals reducing their carbon footprint at home. Instead the biggest climate change reduction would be achieved by changing the behaviour of the one hundred international companies that produce seventy percent of greenhouse gases. Extinction Rebellion is a new network of activists, but already they have ten thousand people on their mailing lists in Victoria. The South West Victoria Branch is one of fourteen groups covering the whole state. Each group makes its own plans for action by finding ways through art, music, education, and non-violent protest to convey the urgent message that solutions need to be found to avert the climate crisis. XR urges the Liberal-National government to tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency. Governments must act now now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025. In response, Portland Labour Party members were able to point to the achievements of the Victorian Labor government: The Andrews Labor Government is leading the nation when it comes to tackling climate change - delivering real action to set Victoria on a path to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Victoria’s Climate Change Act 2017 recognises and supports the Paris Agreement of limiting the increase in the global temperature to well below 2C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 15C. The state government is on track to reduce Victoria’s emissions by 15-20% by 2020. While Australia’s emissions are going in the other direction. It will well and truly meet its renewable energy target of 25% by 2020.

02.01.2022 If you’re at all interested to hear about Extinction Rebellion, then this Saturday’s Worthwhile Conversations at the Portland Library is your opportunity to find out more. Hosted by Portland ALP, the event is open to all. Extinction Rebellion have gained notoriety for blocking cities and its members are often lambasted by the government. Yet Extinction Rebellion, in just 18 months has exploded from its UK roots to now be active in 75 countries. Here in Australia, after 12... months there are already thousands of rebels in 70 groups across the country. And there is no sign of the movement slowing down. The XR logo, flags and banners stand out at its events and are more prominent than ever in the media. The movement now has an active and growing group in South West Victoria, and members are from a cross section of the community, including young and old alike. They recently travelled to Canberra, joining 5000 other people, for the Climate Rally that coincided with the opening of parliament. At the Worthwhile Conversation event on 29th February, Alan Northey and other members of the local group will give you an insight into what drives the Extinction Rebellion movement, its rebels, and perhaps debunk a few myths along the way. The free event is at the Portland Library, this Saturday, and starts at 103.0am. All are welcome. Following a brief presentation from the guest speaker the event transforms into a conversation, and anyone in the audience is welcome to participate. The event finishes at 11:30 am. Extinction Rebellion's South West Victoria branch is represented by Alan Northey.
