22.01.2022 Shaun and I headed out to the shelf today, fishing was slow out there we managed 3 blue eye and a few gemfish, one of the gemfish was a very opportunistic feeder having taken one one of the little redfish we were unintentionally using as a live bait. In other catches Ash Rawlings got a good bag of flathead round at Bridgewater.

15.01.2022 Hugh, Sam, Isaac and Adam headed out today and caught 2 reasonable sized gummy sharks. They also caught some nannagui and other reef species. Fishing was slow most places today a few school sharks and flathead were caught today as well.

14.01.2022 Technically we did catch that fish as I had the leader in my hand when it popped. Letting the fish swim free, but ahh well that’s fishing.

11.01.2022 Today I headed out with Steve halfpenny, we went for a bit of a bottom bash, picking up 2 schoolies and dropping another 2, we also got our bag of snapper with the 2 biggest being 62cm and 56cm. And by the way we were fishing outside the red zone. Tuna fishing was slow in close, but there was plenty of tuna caught on the shelf

11.01.2022 The motley crew back for round 2 today. 16 tuna by 10.30am. Great fishing atm guys. We still have a couple spots left for Friday and weather is looking good t...oo. The pink Tassie Rattlers lure was the stand out today

11.01.2022 Another barrel this afternoon, this one going 121kg, this crew wanted to remain anonymous, but I’m pretty sure most people know who it is.

11.01.2022 Hey all, Thought I would share some tuna info from Portland having just jumped off the phone from Matty Hunt. Just so we are all clear. The exclusion zone that...’s in place to try and limit this Abalone virus is not restricting successful tuna fishing at all! All the fish have been outside of the zone and easy to find. Sizes are varying and hopefully with a few Barrels found, they will also come closer and become easier to target. The myth that fishing is best done within the zone is simply a myth. Fish swim and don’t always come back to the same spots. Matt reports there is truck loads of bait stacked outside the zones, Matt actually commented it’s the best he has seen in decades! This opens up loads of bottom bouncing opportunities and school tuna fishing as well. In good conditions rec boaters can safely head out and catch fish, looking for the usual signs of life such as birds, dolphins, whales and bait. So far since the exclusion has been in place, rec visitations have been remarkably down assuming that they can only catch fish within the zone which couldn’t be further from the truth. This is having a profound effect on the town of Portland and businesses just like the charter guys. Matt’s screaming as he does so well because the fish are there for the taking. Fishing often works in patterns and this season might just be like some of old where you have to go a little wider. Good charter operators like Matthew Hunt Fishing Services, Salty Dog Fishing Charters Port Fairy, OFF the HOOK Fishing Charters and Sharkmen Fishing Charters can all put you on the fish if you don’t feel like going in your own boat is best. Actually grabbing some mates to share a charter to see how the pro’s do it will teach you the how to’s. Certainly worth it as they are wanting to get you fish, you are paying right! Anyway, hope that clears a few things up. Tuna goes by well outside the zone, still good for boaters to visit and tackle the fish in good weather windows. Support the local businesses and get down there. Peace out, Justin

09.01.2022 3 barrels caught today, ranging from 93kg to 121kg, the 121kg tuna is a pending world record as it was caught on 10kg line, beating the previous record by about 20kg, so well done to everyone involved with the capture.

08.01.2022 The Cauchi’s got a couple of ripping kingfish a couple of days ago, measuring 90 and 95cm, they were part of a 4 way hookup having 2 tuna on the other rods.

07.01.2022 Plenty of tuna for everyone today, there’s a couple of schools you can try if you want to get stuck into them, with a school being in 120 meters off Bridgewater and any being in the horse shoe

07.01.2022 Plenty of tuna about for everyone who braved the rough conditions today, with most charter and rec boats being back before lunch.
