24.01.2022 The Portland region has done a terrific job in stopping the spread of COVID-19 but now is not the time to relax. While there have been no reported cases of the ...virus in the community, we need to remain vigilant to ensure there is no second wave. The same caution must apply to prevent the flu and other seasonal viruses. The rate of influenza infection this year is much lower than usual, and this can be attributed to our new-found focus on hand hygiene, coughing etiquette and social distancing. Handwashing is one of the simplest ways of preventing the spread of infections, and is also the best way to reduce hospital-acquired infections. Handwashing is important before and after eating food, after sneezing or coughing, after using the toilet and after being in the community. It also helps to sneeze and cough into your elbow, not your hands. Handwashing with soap removes germs from your hands, preventing infections when people touch their eyes, nose and mouth. Some studies have shown the average person touches their face 2,000 to 3,000 times a day! Removing germs through regular handwashing helps to prevent respiratory infections such as COVID-19 and influenza, along with diarrhea and other spreadable conditions. Proper handwashing involves more than simply running some water over your hands. The World Health Organisation has developed a seven step plans for hand washing? Step 1: Wet Hands. Wet your hands and apply enough liquid soap to create a good lather. ... Step 2: Rub Palms Together. ... Step 3: Rub the Back of Hands. ... Step 4: Interlink Your Fingers. ... Step 5: Cup Your Fingers. ... Step 6: Clean the Thumbs. ... Step 7: Rub Palms with Your Fingers It is recommended you scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Portland District Health has always promoted hand hygiene, with bottles of alcohol hand rub located in all patient care areas and in high traffic areas at the entrance and exits of PDH. This has been particularly relevant during the pandemic. PDH boasts consistently above-average hand hygiene rates of about 95 per cent, one of the best compliance levels in the state.

14.01.2022 PMSV Member Andrew G with his finished project for a customer job. It is a (I might get this wrong) ‘wool stressor’, the comb is locked in place and wool chunks are fitted and carefully dragged through the nails to remove tangles and ensure even separation of wool fibres. The product can then be ‘skaned’ (a ‘skane’ is a wool winding/storage tool (not a spindle like sleeping beauty) and often used as a measurement for wool ‘3 skanes of natural merino please’). Top job Andrew - D

12.01.2022 Hi everyone, we hope you are all staying safe and healthy during this pandemic event. We at the Portland Men’s Shed (vic) would like to share some fantastic news. With the greatest of thanks due to WDEA (Portland) and the Glenelg Shire (Portland Council), who have each provided significant grants, and a small but welcome donation from Bendigo Bank Portland, to allow us to install a Solar Panel System on our roof, provided and installed by Keppel Prince Engineering (Portland).... The Portland Men’s Shed can now heavily reduce our power bills, possibly to the point of earning money from the excess power sent back to the grid. The Portland Men’s Shed (Vic) provides a safe environment for men of all ages (18+ mainly) to communicate and socialize, keep their hands and minds active. Our workshop is available to members who make projects for customers and the community which funds the PMSV Re power, insurance, equipment and consumables. We don’t however require members to work in the workshop as we aren’t a business with employees, however members benefit from access to the latest, safest tools and equipment, able to be shared instead of every member needed their own tools in their own shed. These solar panels are a fantastic addition to our Shed, and all of our members (and board/committee) are truly grateful for these grants and solar panels! - Dean

06.01.2022 PMSV Member Geoff with his Insect Hotel. It has been a great job by all to recycle otherwise scrap items into things designed to benefit nature.

06.01.2022 This post has now been superceeded by more up to date information. Hello Shedders, Customers and Community Members, you may see a fair bit of activity around our shed, we had a CV19 discussion this morning lead by our President, John Smith. ... Update June 22: Due to Victoria rolling back to semi stage 3 restrictions again until late July, we ask members and visitors to review their need to be onsite. While we have plenty of sanitizer and temporary safety rules in place, we don’t want to run the chance of spreading CV19 or the common flu (also a Coronavirus). Please message our Facebook page and one of our senior members will share a phone contact with you. (Please mention your reason for calling as ‘please call me’ usually gets archived) -D We aren’t ‘open’ yet persay as we are working together to clean everything from top to bottom and all in between. Thanks to Tricky Trevs Cleaning our recreation room and kitchen were professionally cleaned for us, we now have sanitizer everywhere, disposable cups for coffee and tea, and the fireplace is back in full swing already. We ask that customers wait at the door (main entrance or just inside if it’s raining) and press the doorbell, one of our members will assist you with signin and cleansing. We need all visitors to provide their full name, contact number or address and time in and out for contact tracing, required as a condition of ‘restarting’. Thanks for all of your patience during this difficult time, we will keep you informed of changes as they become available. - Dean
