25.01.2022 Yesterday at preschool we yarned about Tree's! In celebration of National Tree Day which is held around the country in schools on 30th July. National Tree Day- Focusses on community tree planting and caring for nature. With lots of interest in caring for our yard and gardening lately, this timely event is a great way to extend children’s interest and connecting to community events. At Preschool we come together to Acknowledge the Birpai people and teach them to care for count...ry each day. Today we discussed and shared (yarned) all about Trees. Wati is a Gathang word for tree and we made connections with the children explaining that this is the name given to the room with the green door. We asked the children why trees are important. The children showed their knowledge saying, "for shade", "for animals’ homes", "for breathing" and "for food" displaying a great understanding about the world around them. They also shared stories about animals they had in trees at their house, especially koalas! We all agree trees make us happy and they are special. On of our teachers Alyssa, shared with the children that I had visited the local Landcare nursery on Monday and bought some locally native plants for us to plan. They were given the task of being carers for the trees and making sure no one steps on them or pulls them out and remember to water them. Caring for country is a long-standing aboriginal practice of sustainability. Learning about local natural environment within our curriculum helps children to become global citizens acting in the best interest for their world in the future. FYI - the Landcare nursery in located on Blackbutt road in the industrial area and is open from 9-12 on Mondays. They only stock local native plants ensuring great biodiversity for our area. They are super cheap and a great way to do your bit for sustainable and encourage wildlife to you garden. See more

24.01.2022 Brrrr the temperature has definitely gone down today in Port Macquarie. At the Annex today educators engaged in conversations with the children, centred around the cold start to the day and this resulted in an impromptu fire pit in the Yarning circle. Educators and children talked together about how for thousands of years Aboriginal people have used fires for warmth. We sat around appreciating the heat and sight and sound the fire gave us. We talked about being ‘on country’ and how we could help look after this land for future generations soothed by the crack and pop of the flames... nature’s outdoor heating!

22.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day to all our preschool Dads. Hope your family are able to spend some time together today!

22.01.2022 Today we have had Chay from Impact Environmental Education who delivered to the children a Hastings Council sponsored education session on sustainability. Chay was very impressed with the children’s knowledge about sustainable waste management and the sustainable practices that we have embedded into practice at the preschool. Practicing sustainability empowers children to construct knowledge, explore values and develop an appreciation of the environment and its relationship to their worlds. This lays the foundations for an environmentally responsible adulthood.

22.01.2022 On this cold, chilly winter morning the children were able to enjoy the warmth of our fire pit. It was such a lovely social experience as the children sat together sharing some of their own experiences of having fires, either at home or camping and learning some safety precautions when near fires. They especially loved watching the sausages sizzling in the pan and liked eating them even more!!! Exposure to different "risks" within the preschool program, including open fires results in children developing more confidence, safety awareness and better risk assessment skills, according to a new study by University of Newcastle academics.

13.01.2022 At Community Preschool we are passionate about embedding sustainability in our services, our practises and in the children’s educational experiences. We have solar panels for hot water and power, low energy lighting, use collected rainwater and compost bins and worm farms. The latest addition to our Annex learning environment is a Native Beehive. We are excited about starting this journey of learning about bees and how to care for the hive and sharing this with the children.... Most Australian native bees are solitary insects that build small individual nests, but our variety does hive. They will live in a wooden box attached to our rear fence. During the day they will fly out for food, returning to roost in the evening. Native bees are quite different from introduced European honeybees. They are much smaller and are stingless. Because they are stingless, they do not cause allergic reactions. Our species is called Tetragonula Carbonaria - or they can be called TC or Sugarbag Bees for short. The children joined educators to walk the neighbourhood to inform the neighbours about our new bees and have been so engaged learning all about the work bees do pollinating fruit trees, vegetables and flowering plants! 12.01.2022 Today we said a sad farewell to one of our beloved educators, the lovely Linda!!! Linda has decided after 21 years at Community Preschool, that it is time to pack away her hat and move on to the next exciting chapter in her life! What can we say to an employee who has been dedicated to developing relationships with both children and families other than ... thank you. It really doesn’t seem enough. So to send her off in style, today we had a celebration of Linda. The children all brought a single flower stem and we created a huge bouquet of flowers and her colleagues spoilt Linda with some lovely gifts and a celebration lunch. Linda will be very much missed, especially her ever smiling face and wisdom of experience!!!! Best wishes from all of us at PMCP!

10.01.2022 Community preschool are the proud new owners of our brand new minibus!!! The bus will be used to transport children to and from preschool daily and for connecting the children with the local community through excursions. For preschool families interested in joining the transport program next term, pick up your expression of interest form, from either Munster Street or the Annex.

09.01.2022 Look at our lovely worms! We had lots of willing and curious helpers as we emptied the'cooked' compost bin on to our garden beds. The children thought the most enjoyable part was discovering the huge amount of worms there were in the compost! Hopefully, this is a healthy sign for our soil!

06.01.2022 What do you do when life gives you rainy days? Play in the puddles of cause! Rain is such a wonderful learning opportunity! Moving about on wet surfaces takes more concentration, strength and agility than dry surfaces. As children play in the rain, they are developing their bodies and are able to grow more confident in their movements. But the number one reason just has to be that it is plain old FUN!!!

05.01.2022 We are seeking a passionate and experienced Part Time Early Childhood Teacher to join our exceeding rated service. If this sounds like you or someone you know, please apply via Seek in the link below! https://www.seek.com.au/job/51252669

05.01.2022 Today we have been celebrating National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day, held every year on August 4th! The Children's Day 2020 theme: 'We are the Elders of tomorrow, hear our voice' honours the Elders custodians of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditional knowledge, passed down to children through stories and cultural practice. There were many stories and explorations of cultural practice at preschool today! Everyday at preschool we are committed to listening to children’s voices and developing their sense of agency. This empowers children to make decisions and plays a crucial role in developing life long independent learning skills.

04.01.2022 At preschool we encourage ‘nude food’ lunch boxes... that is lunches with limited plastic and wrappings. Below is a guide for making your own plastic wrap alternative, a bees wax wrap. Who knew it was so easy!

03.01.2022 Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to your body, mind and feelings in the present moment. The practice of mindfulness can benefit children and adults of every age, enabling us to accept and acknowledge the present moment as we experience it. Jeanette one of our wonderful Annex educators, has been exploring mindfulness with the children and has introduced them to a Tibetan singing bowl. The soothing sound of the bowl enables the children to quiet their minds. At PMCP we believe that intentionally teaching children mindfulness techniques, early in life will mean they will hopefully develop mindful habits and continue to enjoy the benefits of mindfulness throughout their lives.

03.01.2022 Did you know that today is Early Childhood Educators day? It’s a day where we acknowledge the the work of our wonderful educators, as they support the wellbeing and healthy development of the children in their care. We blessed to have a dedicated team at PMCP, so today was a celebration! A lovely morning tea and gift from the Board of Management and the most special gift to our educators, was the messages that families took the time to write at our message stations. The educators were very touched as we read through them tonight at a staff meeting. Such a beautiful validation!
