21.01.2022 A nice 8-10 knot southerly with some stronger gusts had sailors excited as they rigged up yesterday for Port Macquarie Sailing Club's last Sprint Series for 2020. The winds were so good, the plan was to have multiple laps instead of the usual one lap sprints, but as the fleet headed out for the start of the first race the wind dropped and with a strong run out tide it took almost 2 minutes from the starters gun for the first boat to cross the start line. The fleet finally ro...unded the first mark and make better time with the tide at least until the return leg. The overcast skies made it hard to see the riverbed and both Spica and Puddy had adventures on the mud flats. Eventually, a shortened course was called, and sailors retreated to the clubhouse for lunch while the wind came back and teased. In the catamaran division, Jack Corthals on Harpic made the first win of his clean sweep of the day. Scott Witchard on Hummer crossed second followed by Dave Winter on Spica. Tony Kuhn on Stella did not finish. In the Juniors, Kieran Copeland and Simon Gandy in Flying Fish crossed the line first for what would also be another clean sweep for the day. Elsa Gandy and Zoe Copeland followed close behind in Sail Fish. Terry Howard in Ratz won the first race in the Monohull division in a great tactical move that saw him pass Roger Shipton in Zazoo who had led for much of the race, but was stuck with no wind. Stuart Symonds and Andrew Copeland in Elmo came in second followed by Zazoo. After lunch, the course was revised and a return to the usual one lap for monos and two for cats was decided. The wind improved slightly, but was very changeable swinging more easterly. In the cats, Harpic continued to clean up the competition (as well as "around the bend"). Stella improved on the first race to run second and Hummer third while providing some entertainment for spectators. The finishing sequence was the same for races 2, 3 and 4. The juniors also had carbon copy races, with Flying Fish first and Sail Fish second, although it was close in race 4. The monohull field reduced after lunch with only Ratz and Elmo remaining to battle the conditions. Ratz won race 2, and Elmo won races 3 and 4. Next week is Race 6 of the Spring Season starting 12 noon. A Christmas barbecue will be held after the race at approximately 3pm. 18.01.2022 A fleet of 21 boats made a great spectacle on the Hastings River on Sunday for five quick races in Port Macquarie Sailing Club's Sprint Series. Tricky conditions kept sailors on their toes with large swings in wind direction and several "holes" in the otherwise pleasant 10-12 knot breeze. Overall, racing was very competitive with boats in each class sticking close together making for some fierce battles as well as great photos and spectating. Two quick single-lap races were ...Continue reading

14.01.2022 While Port Macquarie Sailing Club members rigged up in a light westerly breeze on Sunday morning for the first of two races, the weather had other ideas. Minutes before the race start the wind dropped. All three groups started 3 minutes apart, but with no wind, boats were tightly packed and there was much boat-to-boat chatter about the dangers of "drift" racing. Fortunately the tide had only started to run out and eventually the fleet rounded the first marker and made better... time for the downwind leg as the breeze came in. To keep everyone on their toes, the wind turned SSE during the race, but improved to 8-9 knots for a much more pleasant sail. In the catamaran division, yardstick results saw Frank O'Rourke on Dino take the win from Tony Kuhn on Stella, Rob Barwick on Drift and Grady and Alice McNee on Captain Jack. Applying handicaps shuffled the results with Stella leading Dino, Drift and Captain Jack. Warren Sykes on Runamuck was closely shadowed by Martina Holt on Spellbound for the entire race, with both Roger Shipton on Zazoo and Terry Howard on Ratz not far behind. Further back was Steve Couch on Lazybuoy followed by Max Hachtmann and Warwick Morrow on Britannia, Adam Pilcher and Khy Kovacs on Red Star, Andrew and Zoe Copeland on Puffin. David Makin on Puddy and Stuart Symons on Elmo did not finish. In the monohull division, both yardstick and handicap results were the same. Two juniors took part in the race with Simon Gandy and Kieran Copeland coming in first on Sail Fish, and Bridgette Taylor and new sailor Hugh Robertson on Dorado coming second. Again, yardstick and handicap results were the same. After lunch the forecast promised better winds, but it seemed like a repeat of the morning race with the wind dropping and everyone struggling against the tide to get from the start line to the first marker for the 2nd Club Championship. That is everyone except Frank O'Rourke who seemed to arrange his own personal weather system! It was so calm, Zazoo was able to flag down a passing powerboat and negotiate to take onboard some "refreshments". Dino had a convincing win followed by Stella, Drift and Captain Jack. On handicap, Dino was still way out in front followed by Drift, Stella and Captain Jack. In the monohull division, Jim Kerrison and Deb Stening on Death Defying made great use of the spinnaker to keep Runamuck in second place. Spellbound followed next and raised a protest that Runamuck started with the wrong group. Next was Zazoo (well hydrated), Ratz, Elmo (now with Max Hachtmann as crew), and Puffin (now with Kieran as crew). Again, yardstick and handicap results were the same. Sail Fish was the only junior team to compete in the afternoon race with Zoe at the helm with Simon. Well done! Next week will be races 6-10 in the Sprint Series. Jeff Walsh is rostered on duty. 12.01.2022 With only light NE winds and an unfavourable forecast, Post Macquarie Sailing Club’s Commodore planned a rather unusual Marathon course on Sunday. Instead of the usual race from the clubhouse to the Town Green, then to Dennis Bridge and back, the course was planned entirely east of the Hibbard ferry to keep the fleet closer to the coast and in better wind. The plan was definitely needed as the strong incoming tide and patchy breeze played havoc in between the two ferries. How...ever, east of Pelican Island there was good wind and some excitement to be had. Rohan and Charlie Nosworthy in Water Rat sliced through the fleet for the yardstick win. David Makin in Puddy crossed second also making it look easy, followed by Frank O’Rourke on Dino and Warren Sykes in Runamuck. In the middle of the field a fierce battle was fought with many changes of position throughout the race. Martina Holt in Spellbound crossed next followed by Steve Bohlsen (sailing single-handed) in Interceptor, Roger Shipton in Zazoo, Grady and Alice McNee on Captain Jack, Stuart Symons and Kieran Copeland in Elmo, Tony Kuhn on Stella, Simon and Elsa Gandy and Zoe Copeland in Voyager, Rob Barwick on Drift, and David Winter on Spica. Terry Howard in Ratz and Steve Couch in Lazybuoy did not finish. In the Junior division Aiden Nosworthy in Red Herring took a well-deserved win after waiting in a hole meters from the finish line and trying every trick in the book to escape. Eventually patience paid off and the breeze returned to complete the course. Andrew and Kate Copeland in Puffin also completed the Junior course, although from the scorers box, it was unclear if they meant to do the Junior course, or if they passed through the finish line on the way to the second lap which was not completed? Next week will be Sprint Series Races 11-15. First race starts at 12 noon. Warren Sykes is rostered on duty. Chef de saucisse will perform his magic again to provide a barbecue lunch in between races. Steve Couch Publicity Officer 0417 667 879 [email protected] See more
