25.01.2022 Decisions based on fear, can lead to regret. . A lot of pressure can come in those final weeks of labour. Ive been there and experienced it and continue to see it over and over again and yes I saw it again today. . It doesnt seem fair that birthing women are continually burdened with the pressure and fear of something possibly going wrong in their labour and birth. Then to top it off being told that if they dont book in for an induction theyre putting their baby at risk,... even though care providers are not providing any evidence to support their option. . Not nice! This is fear mongering. . The evidence does suggest that its the fear, that something might go wrong, that often results in medical intervention. The fear stops our hormones from working and therefore its not surprising that the birth doesnt go well in this scenario. . So this is when decision making, using the BRAIN Technique, is so important. . Ask the questions: - Why? - Can I wait? - Is my baby in any danger? - Could you provide me with evidence to support your option? - Please provide me the risks involved in this procedure . Asking the right questions, making informed decisions, trusting yourself and your gut and staying calm, is a wonderful recipe for a more positive and empowering experience. . . See more

24.01.2022 Birth is an opportunity to transcend. To rise above what we are accustomed to, to reach deeper inside ourselves than we are familiar with, and to see not only what we are made of, but the strength we can access through birth. . Love this quote by Marcie Macari . Birth for me was absolutely a transcending experience. It taught me more than l can ever say and I continue to learn and grow from both of my births everyday. Initially it stripped me down to the core and I felt as... though over time I was rebuilding myself and becoming the person I am today, which of course is still ever-changing. . Hands up if birth has changed you... or perhaps youre beginning to feel a change already as you get closer to your birthing day The calm before the storm? . Repost @spiritysol . Have you ever seen a storm roll through a woman? Have you heard her roar with the thunder of crashing clouds? Have you seen her crack with lightning? Her whole body electrified with the sacred energy of creation? Have you seen her open up and pour new life onto the earth? Sacred waters rushing forth, raindrops falling from her eyes, she is Mother Earth embodied. . . See more

24.01.2022 Finished Unit 4 of the Hypnobirthing Australia course with a couple yesterday and along with bringing their practice all together and prepping them for the big day, we also chatted all things cord clamping and placenta delivery. . There are choices in regards to birthing your placenta as well as choices about what you can do with your placenta after birth. Read below as well as a lovely common practice done in Samoa with the placenta. . Repost @hypnobirthingaustralia... . "Our placenta is amazing. Do you know that it is the bodys only temporary organ? Our body grows an organ especially for our baby and then, after our baby is birthed, our very clever body then facilitates the detachment of the placenta from the uterine wall, and expels it. . In the western world, it is common for the placenta to be tossed into the waste or incinerated. It is becoming more common now to encapsulate the placenta for postpartum benefits. . In Samoan culture, it is common to plant the placenta under a new tree. I have heard of one father who proudly invites visitors to walk through his garden lined with magnificent trees, and proudly attributes each tree to the childs placenta that nourished it". . 23.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads, Dads-to-be, Step Dads, Grandads and all the other amazing superhero guys in our life. Heres to you! . Im always amazed by just how much loving support I see from partners when they come to my classes. They really are fully committed to being there for mum & baby and its so beautiful to see their fatherhood journey starting while bub is still in the womb . This Repost @milkandhannah is absolutely beautiful. Support is key!... . A pause in front of the fire. She firmly asked him to finish his coffee and then get into the tub. It hadnt even been sipped. Freshly poured from the pot, the smell still hung in the air. The time was near. Everything still and quiet. Out of the silence, she spoke, muffled into the crook of his neck, . Are you crying? No... he said softly and with a chuckle. . Coy and with a smirk (and confidence) she slipped out, Are you lying to me? as she nuzzled back into him. . Im an outsider. Silently holding a camera and doing my work. But Id bet my rent that she was right. . . See more

20.01.2022 I was asked to share my breech homebirth story today at the homebirth meeting I attended. It was so lovely to reflect on how empowered I felt during my birth, despite the lead up to my birthing day, which involved a very stressful couple of weeks having to constantly fight for my birthing rights. . My story was so far from how I thought it would go, but it was so much better than I couldve imagined in the end and I know that wouldnt have been possible without my hypnobirthi...ng because I was: . - informed - knowledgable - empowered - knew my rights - supported by my partner - prepared - confident, because I had the tools - And I knew what questions to ask . This birth taught me the biggest lesson that I still teach and put into practice today, which is. . You cant guarantee the future. Youll never know what the future holds, or in this case, how your birth will go, but you can be prepared and knowledgable and when youve got that to back you up, then you are powerful. . Your birth experience means so much!!! So if youre wanting to learn the tools and techniques to become more confident and empowered during your pregnancy and birth then the Hypnobirthing Australia course is the preparation needed and without a doubt is worth the investment. . I am grateful for hypnobirthing everyday. . . Few spots available on my September Hypnobirthing Australia course. Dont miss out. 13.01.2022 Squat 300 times a day, youre going to give birth quickly. - Ina May Gaskin . Wow holy moly! 300 squats per day. Hmmm, thats a lot. I never managed that many during my pregnancies heck! I dont think Id be able to stand after that But I did manage to do a few each day and evidence suggests, even just a few daily squats is going to help prepare the body for labour and birth. Not only will squatting help tone the legs, open the hips, release the lower back, but also le...ngthen the pelvic floor. . Nicole Crawford, pre & postnatal fitness specialist talks about Kegel exercises and how they can pull the sacrum inward, which can promote more weakness, however by doing a few daily squats youre strengthening the glutes and therefore balancing out the anterior pull on the sacrum. So those squats are super important. . As always Ina May Gaskin knows what shes talking about . Heres some of my couples doing a few squats and using the gym ball against a wall to support them. 12.01.2022 Birth announcement! . Hello little hypnobub. Welcome earth side. . So excited to hear of this beautiful little bubs entrance into the world. Had a great conversation with mum on the phone about how the birth went. She mentioned her membranes releasing (waters breaking) early in the morning without surges starting straight away Instead of stressing and worrying about when her surges would eventually kick off, she decided to relax at home, chill out, watch movies and enjoy... time with her family. When labour eventually started that evening and she was calm and relaxed and ready to dive in. Love it! Nice work mum! You did awesome . Heres a quick little run down of how the birth went: . Hey Kate, bub came early! He was born last night. No induction, no drugs, membranes ruptured first at 6am and once surges started at 4:30pm he was here in 6 hours. Thank you so much for everything you taught us. . . See more

11.01.2022 I love this photo of one of my couples Im taking through the Hypnobirthing Australia course, with their mum in the shot too Such connection and the support is just shining through. . Theyre working on an acupressure point, which helps the cervix to dilate, strengthens surges and is also a great one to do if it looks like bub is in the posterior position. . I recently watched Nicholas Olow, Acupuncturist and Founder of Better Birth 360 Summit, in a video talking to a birth...ing mum using the point in labour where she noticed her pain level being reduced by 60% within 10secs of applying this pressure. Nice! . I remind partners to take a deep breath in and then on the out breath they can gently and slowly apply the pressure on the point making sure mum is ok. The area will feel quite tender and so it helps to apply a gradual pressure. . This and other acupressure points that I mention in the course are from Debra Betts Natural Pain Relief Techniques for Childbirth Using Acupressure. . . 09.01.2022 Repost from fellow Hba practitioner Caitlin @motherdownunder . I have talked about this before (most publicly in my Peppermint Magazine article and my BabyTalk podcast episode), and since this is Birth Trauma Week I am going to talk about it again. . In Australia, 33% of birthing women report experiencing birth trauma.... There are roughly 300,000 births a year in Australia, which is about 820 births a day...which means that about 250 WOMEN A DAY ARE TRAUMATISED BY THEIR BIRTH EXPERIENCE. . Our partners also experience trauma. A birth traumatic experience also effects our babies. And over 90% of midwives report feeling traumatised by experiencing disrespectful care and subsequently feeling complicit in the provision of poor care at work. . ENOUGH! . Much of this birth trauma is avoidable. It is about not being listened to, feeling disrespected, losing control of your birth experience. These are aspects of birth that we can change! . Being cared for by the same midwife throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postnatal period (and when necessary having that midwife be supported by a respectful and women-centred OB). Birthing on country. Access to home birth. Having a doula by your side. Being educated about your options and your rights (your partner also needs to be educated about your options and your rights). . Birth trauma is not something that exists only during birth and then magically disappears once the mother has her "healthy baby" in her arms. It has profound effects on the birthing mother and her relationships with herself, her baby, her partner, and her wider community. . Not to mention how a traumatic birth then becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. When women emerge feeling fearful of birth, they convey that trauma to other women and then those women enter into pregnancy feeling afraid and expecting a traumatic experience. . It is time to break the cycle. Demand the basics...respectful care in which your voice is heard and the process of informed consent / informed refusal is upheld. . I want women to believe that, no matter the mechanics of birth, they deserve a positive experience. . Image by @jas_elkavenue See more

09.01.2022 Repost @hypnobirthingaustralia . "Just as a womans heart knows how and when to pump, her lungs to inhale, and her hand to pull back from fire, so she knows when and how to give birth." Virginia Di Orio. .... Our body is so so smart... its constantly doing its best to keep us healthy and its so very clever at knowing what do do in major situations such as birth! Your body is capable of this, it knows what to do. Just keep sending down your love and positive thoughts. . . See more

08.01.2022 Professor Hannah Dalhlen, in todays Birth Trauma Awareness Week Special Panel Discussion, spoke about 5 principal points for preventing birth trauma based on her research: . 1. Respectful care must be a reality and not a mantra. 2. Continuity of care midwifery model is the best option for achieving a normal, safe psychological birth. 3. Help women understand all models of care and support womens access to their choice of birth and model of care.... 4. Offer more flexible options for women who have risk factors. If there are risk factors and theres a partnership between midwife and obstetrician, it should be made even more clear that you absolutely have the right to decline, have the right to good information to make a decision. 5. Getting the framework right in regards to policies, guidelines, education, research, regulations and professional leadership, because when this is all in place then it will flow down to impact womens health. . Professor Hannah Dalhans advice for pregnant women coming into the system: - Get yourself a continuity of care midwife - Know your rights - Know the things that facilitate normal birth - Know that you can say no - If at any point your needs arent being met, you have the right to address that . . . If youd like to check out this discussion and listen to such a knowledgable, expert panel of speakers including of course @hannah.dahlen, go to the Maternal Mental Health Matters Australia 2020 facebook page https://www.facebook.com/maternalmentalhealthmattersaustralia and you will see the link to the live recording. . . 08.01.2022 To all those mums coming up to your birthing day. the waiting game is hard, I know, especially when youre just dying to meet this little bundle of joy youve been carrying for 9 months But the facts are, only 35% of women give birth by their due date holy crap thats not a lot. Which means this 40 weeks is not meaning very much. . Furthermore, on average, a first pregnancy will go to 40 + 5 wks... And 75% of those women will birth spontaneously by 41+2 wks. .... Subsequent pregnancies on average last 40+3 wks... And 75% of these women will birth spontaneously by 41 wks. . These are the stats based on Dr Rachel Reeds book "Why Induction Matters" . So when that 40 weeks rolls on by and youre getting frustrated and wondering whats wrong with me and why hasnt my baby arrived yet just remember those stats and be easy on yourself and enjoy a bit of bonus time & make those days count . . 07.01.2022 So thats a wrap for these guys and theyve now completed the 4 units of the Hypnobirthing Australia course over 4 Fridays and from the comfort of their own home. Theyre now ready and raring for their positive birth and Im so excited for them. Love that theyre feeling calmer now after completing the course. One of my prioritie...s is to help you find that trust in yourself that comes from being informed and knowing your choices and then having some great tools and techniques up your sleeve to back you up. Can I also say, this partner is great at doing light touch massage - great technique Keeping his partner calm and relaxed. Brilliant! 06.01.2022 To finish off the week, heres some vision board inspiration... created by some of my couples doing the Hypnobirthing Australia course . Vision boards are so powerful but why? What are they actually doing . When you visualise what you want to achieve, your brain generates an impulse that then tells the neutrons to go perform the act. Basically, youre priming yourself to do what is consistent with what youre thinking ... . Think it, believe it (really believe it!) and then your body starts to react . Hands up if youre currently working on or did you create a vision board for your birth? . Our mind is powerful. . . 05.01.2022 Birth announcement! . Yay! Big congratulations to this lovely couple. Im so overjoyed that they were able to achieve the calm and positive birth they were hoping for. They so beautifully adapted to the special circumstances that came up during their pregnancy requiring them to change their plans and prepare for a positive Caesarean. . Thank you Kate. I was able to stay relaxed, we had our music playing, they created ...a calm atmosphere, did delayed cord clamping etc. It felt really special and calm! Were over the moon with our little Taron . 05.01.2022 Yay! Love these forward leaning birth positions, because they are known to help speed up labour, reduce discomfort, align baby and reduce the risk of shoulder dystocia. . However, it will always come down to you and how youre feeling and what feels most comfortable in that moment. . I remember for my first birth, I was on my knees leaning over a chair in the shower. My midwife was struggling to receive my baby and so asked my partner to pull me back and support me in a half ...squat and half standing position. However honestly, my body was telling me it needed to be in a forward leaning position. . Trust in you and your body. . Repost @thepositivepregnancyjourney . This position is called *The Runners Lunge* Do you want to know the best birthing position? 05.01.2022 Language is powerful & can most definitely effect your labour & birth and sometimes without you even knowing... subtle persuasion, along with being a good girl can strip you of your power & lead to regret. . Repost @ittakesavillagemidwifery . How many of you have sat on a doctors exam table, when your doctor asks you to just scoot down a little for me, turn to the side for me, take a deep breath for me? How many of you heard something like this during labor - Ok...ay now just give one good push for me? . The ways in which we are infantilized by medical providers is subtle, and this way of talking to women is an institutionalized relic of a time, not too long ago, when medicine was overtly paternalistic. Not only does this type of rhetoric perpetuate a potentially dangerous doctor-patient dynamic in which the doctor maintains authority over your body, but what starts as asking you to do something simple for me quickly turns into a set of labs + tests being ordered that you dont think you need, or a little snip being performed without your consent during birth - that you feel obligated to do for the doctor! . Medical misogyny shows up in the language that is used, the subtle coercions that happen, and the usurping of our power in sometimes small but insidious ways. . What happens in a medical encounter should be for you. With your confident informed consent. When you hear this type of language, learn to recognize it so you can stay in your power and authority. You never have to do anything with your body for anyone else. You never have to agree to procedures that you do not think are best for you. You are in charge. . Your body, your rules. . For more info on how being a "good girl" in the doctors office can actually be hazardous to your health sometimes, head to the link below: . https://avivaromm.com/good-girl-health-hazard/ . : @feministmidwife - thank you for sharing these words and important conversations . . 04.01.2022 Im worried they wont LET me birth the way I want to. This is a concern that comes up regularly in my sessions. . Can I say No to that? . We have been led to believe we cant say No and there is no choice... . Theres aways a choice! . Sometimes that means going against the system and disobeying the rules, some of which are based on opinion and policy rather than evidence. . @drsarawickham says standards and guidelines are created so that bureaucratic system can run smoothly. They are only an offer and its ok to say, thats not right for me. . So... research, be informed, know your rights & make your own decisions... Your body, your baby! . 03.01.2022 Do you agree? . Isnt it strange how were led to believe its the other way round and that we need to be saved, before anything has even happened. This level of fear has a detrimental effect on our birth. . Even our birth partners are led to feel its their job to save us...... . Rhea Dempsey puts it beautifully, If the partner can understand that birth is not a medical emergency, but rather a physiological event in the body, a peak performance experience, they can stay present and see the potency and power in the situation . Birth is sacred and it should be treated as such. When you as the birthing woman feel that the space is respected, you are respected, and everyone in the room has trust in you and in birth itself then, you boost your hormones, allow your body to work more effectively and absolutely increase youre ability to experience a natural birth. . . .
