20.01.2022 It seems like there is a "day" for something every day, and it's easy to become blase about them. But today is one that is very personal and close to my heart - not only is it my gorgeous husband's birthday, but it's also World Suicide Prevention Day. Many of you know the story behind me becoming a psychologist and working exclusively with the veterinary profession. Many of you also know a huge part of this was due to my adored cousin Andrew losing his life to suicide over ...20 years ago. Tragically, in addition to Andrew's suicide, I have also lost friends (some who were considered family) and colleagues to suicide. While I work incredibly hard to tackle the disproportionate rate of suicide within the veterinary profession, I continue to build and grow Andrew's legacy. Ironically, because of his death the lives of many people have been saved, and I have no doubt he is incredibly proud of, and humbled by, the enormity of his legacy. Andrew, I am so proud to be your cousin. Of course I wish you were still here with us in the physical world, but I know in spirit you are helping me with my work every step of the way. When I feel like I'm not making a difference, you send me signs to remind me of how far I have come. When I get upset because I feel like I am up against endless obstacles, you give me hope. When I get frustrated when the support I'm seeking for my work appears to fall on deaf ears, you nudge me and encourage me to keep going. You are my strength. You are my encouragement. You are my cheersquad on the other side. Together, we will make a positive difference. There is no reason to suffer alone and go through the heartbreak that our family, and many other families, have gone through. 05.01.2022 Veterinarians have one of the highest rates of suicide - roughly four-times the general population and two-times higher than other health professionals. Our charity is aiming to reduce the stigma in veterinary professionals seeking help, raise awareness in the community about the realities (vs the perceptions) of working in the veterinary profession, and provide psychological and educational support to veterinary professionals. It's been over two years since our last campaign..., which went global. We are now fundraising for our next campaign but the costs are beyond the scope of our budget. We need help to raise the funds required - every dollar helps! We appreciate not everyone is in the position to donate money, but you can still help by sharing this fundraising campaign, as well as get in touch with organisations you know and asking them to donate, having a fundraising (virtual) event - the opportunities are endless.
