25.01.2022 Buttercup, Sweetpea and Meadow. Three orphan Brushtail Possums in care in Far North QLD.
25.01.2022 Do you know your ringtail from your brushtail? Western ringtail possums can be distinguished from larger brushtail possums by their smaller, rounded ...ears, and tails with shorter fur. Their tail fur lies flat and ends in a white tip and is used for climbing. While, as their name suggests, brushtail possums' tails are bushy, and they have more pointed faces than ringtails. Adult brushtail possums are also generally bigger than ringtail possums (1.3kg compared with 1kg) Jiri Lochman You can read about 'The Tale of Two Tails' possum activity run by Nearer to Nature in #LANDSCOPEmagazine shop.dbca.wa.gov.au

23.01.2022 This is my favourite game. Climb along the bed head, then hang down and grab my mums hair, then run up the sleeve of her dressing gown for a quick cuddle...repe...at...repeat until I'm all tuckered out. She says no-one else is allowed to do this. I think I'm too cute even for her to say no too. #shadow #criticallyendangered #ringtailpossum See more
23.01.2022 I love creating habitat zones in my garden and watching the wildlife using it. Every year think about adding something extra to your garden even if it's just another plant, log or nest box.

21.01.2022 There are many topics that provoke controversy when it comes to wildlife and each State has its own rules and regulations. One of those topics is "Keeping Native animals as pets". If you have 15 minutes to spare this video offers some interesting thoughts.

19.01.2022 Im going to tell you a story. In circumstances we will never know this little 133g ball of fluff lost his mother days ago. He was spotted on the ground trying ...to eat grass yesterday, already starving but was unable to be caught. After another cold night alone today he was in much more dire straights. Dehydrated, emaciated and bone cold. Tired, and so alone. Barely responsive and hoarsely calling for his mother with his last ounce of strength. A baby this size should be warm with his mother and still 100% dependant on her milk round the clock. He has had subcutaneous warm fluids, glucose to prevent shock and is down my top, next to my heart. Once I thought he was in death throes but he was dreaming, later I thought he had passed but he was sleeping deeply. I am hopeful he will pull through, but we have a tough few days ahead, not least of all tonight. For now, he is warm, and loved again. The moral of this story is that no possum seen in daylight is OK. They are nocturnal and hide well, you should be lucky to see them at night. If you see a possum in the daylight, especially if it is on the ground, please seek help from a licenced wild life rehabilitator urgently. Possums are arboreal and will rarely come to ground unless its to sneak up the next tree where there is no canopy connectivity. Finally, save your local wildlife rehabilitators number on your phone. You never know when you will need it. See more

17.01.2022 We should feel privileged that we have these animals in our midst. We find theyre disappearing in the bush, and yet people say, Oh, theyre a problem in my ro...of. Its not until theyre rare that someone suddenly cares. So, next time a battalion of brushtails marches across your roof in the middle of the night, or a ringtail prunes your garden to its liking, dont feel annoyed and frustrated. Perhaps its time for you to pause, think laterally and consider installing a nesting box for your resident possum, abandon the roses and plant natives that both humans and possums can enjoy. ~Clare McArthur. They also boast a rem...arkable tail which is flat with fringed hair and grows either side of the tail. 15.01.2022 BORR PROTESTS CONTINUE Opponents of the planned Bunbury Outer Ring Road have hired a botanist to take on Main Roads. They say they believe the government's envi...ronmental assessments of the plan were not thorough enough. So, they've brought in a Harvard trained expert, to do his own research.
15.01.2022 Its special moments like this that make the hard times all worth while
15.01.2022 An update on Possums and fruit trees
15.01.2022 Our babies are out. It is a very vulnerable time for them when just out of pouch. Please be on the lookout and do a doubletake if you see something lying on the ground. You may save a life.
14.01.2022 Why did the possum cross the road?* A new possum bridge is being built over the new Busselton bridge, to help possums cross safely. There were concerns the... new road would disturb the habitat of endangered the Western Ringtail Possum. The series of rope bridges will hopefully let the possums get to the other side. *to get together with mates
13.01.2022 Some Friday possum cuteness
13.01.2022 Our twin girls are going really well. At the moment they are both inside my windcheater munching on peppermint leaves. Helen, the bigger possum likes to back... ride her sister!! Maire, the smaller one hangs onto my shirt by her teeth. When they are back riding on mums back, they have to cling on tightly to her fur with all 4 limbs and their teeth. See more

11.01.2022 Leicester wetlands possum sanctuary The Leschenault Catchment Council is very pleased to announce we have received funding through the national WIRES Landcare Australia Wildlife Relief and Recovery Grants to create a possum sanctuary in partnership with the Shire of Dardanup. The LCC is only one of two Western Australian recipients of the funding, which is a huge honour. This funding will enable us to support the critically endangered Western Ringtail Possum and provide a pl...ace for the community to observe and conserve the species in its natural environment said LCC Project Officer Katrina Zeehandelaar-Adams. Now that the project has been announced, we are hoping to hit the ground running. The project will involve creating a sanctuary within an area of Leicester Reserve along the Collie River, removal of woody weeds, revegetation with a range of native plants that are part of the Western Ringtail Possums natural habitat, and interpretive signage that will provide visitors with information and a chance to observe the species through self-guided night stalks. The Shire of Dardanup has committed to providing in-kind support for the project and ongoing maintenance of the sanctuary. This is a fantastic opportunity to shine the light on how lucky Dardanup is to have the Western Ringtail Possum within the area and how excited we are to work with the LCC and WIRES/Landcare Australia to raise the profile of these incredible little animals remarked Jackie Nichol, Environmental Officer at the Shire of Dardanup. We chose the area as its a wonderful site near the river for locals and community to learn more about WAs amazing and unique native flora and fauna and actively help to protect and conserve them. Sign up to the LCC e-newsletter or follow us on Facebook to learn how you can get involved in this exciting project. More information on the grant and the project can be found here https://landcareaustralia.org.au//wireslandcareaustraliagr https://www.leschenaultcc.org.au/leicester-reserve-possum-s
10.01.2022 How to make a hanging basket drey for your ringtail possums
10.01.2022 A friend recently said to me "But there is plenty of forest". All day I hear the chainsaws going...the log trucks moving native forest logs to our port and land being cleared for agricultural, industrial, mining and residential areas. The South West is known as an environmental hotspot for a reason...and it isn't environmental protection! Care for what we have.
09.01.2022 I guess this is called spoiling your resident wild possum.
09.01.2022 It would be interesting to watch our possums during the phases of the moon. Do they seem more active during moonlight or cloud? Do they come out later on full moon nights? There is so much we can learn.
09.01.2022 Let’s begin by taking a smallish nap or two... ~Winnie the Pooh.

08.01.2022 Gorgeous little video for the benefit of our precious mountian pygmy possums. If you live in the area please spread the word.
06.01.2022 ( ) Here on the beautiful Atherton Tablelands we are lucky to have some amazing and unique native species. In t...he coming weeks we will be featuring these unique species on our social media platforms. Tonights spotlight is on the Herbert River Ringtail. This medium sized ringtail possum lives in north-eastern Queensland rainforests above elevations of 350meters between Mount Lee, West of Ingham and the Lamb Range. The Herbert River Gorge divides the species into two sub populations. It is occasionally found in the tall eucalypt open forests fringing the western edge of the rainforest. Its absence from lowlands concedes with the mean maximum temperature of the warmest month exceeding 30degrees, and is thought to relate to the high energy cost of keeping cool. The Herbert River Ringtail is nearly exclusively arboreal with a diet consisting of leaves, fruits and flowers. In comparison with other ringtails they select leaves containing significantly more protein which includes leaves from Pink Ash, Brown Quandong and Bumpy Satin Ash. This strictly nocturnal possum sleeps during the daytime in tree hollows or large epiphytic ferns. They are also capable of constructing a rudimentary 'drey' like the Common Ringtail The female Herbie has two functional teats present in the forward opening pouch with two young usually being reared together. Three-quarters of births occur from May to July and young leave the pouch permanently by 120 days of age. Young Herbies are a pale fawn colour but develop the distinctive black and white body with age. They are very elusive and rarely come into care. The photos attached are from two twin Herbert River Ringtails that came into care 3 years ago and a adult that came in care last year.
06.01.2022 A lovely video from one of our dedicated FNQ Wildlife Rescue carers. The life and times of 'Abbey Road' - an orphaned striped possum we were fortunate enough to... raise. Striped possums are only found in Australia and New Guinea and are actually more closely related to sugar gliders than other possums. They are solitary, mostly nocturnal, arboreal, and build nests in tree branches. They have weirdly elongated tongues, long incisors and the largest brain in relation to body weight of any marsupial. Abbey was an absolute pleasure to care for and we are happy to report she is now back in the wild where she belongs. by Daintree Wonder Tours #fnqwildliferescue #StripedPossum #rescuecarerelease
06.01.2022 Our original possum, Diggy didn't come home earlier in the year so we assume that was the end of her life. This is her 4th baby, imaginatively called Bubs.. Why Bubs keeps bringing home the leaves is beyond me but there's a selection of previous ones on the verandah. Sue
05.01.2022 Huge thanks to Rachael, Rowena and Penny at Strike Point. Amazing to work with, I couldnt fault communication, service, product or price. Highly recommend them for any printing needs!
05.01.2022 These four Brushtail Possums are in care with a TWR carer. They are all orphans with two from Mareeba, 1 from Chewko and 1 from Petford. They are enjoying their favourite dinner which is fresh native leaf and flowers.
05.01.2022 Poisoning in Possums A few days ago our rescuers responded to a call for a mother Brushtail Possum and her back young sitting in a garden bed in the middle of... the day. It was reported the joey was bright and alert, however Mum appeared lethargic and barely moving. The caller was able to easily pick up the possum and place her in a cardboard box. This is not usually an easy task to accomplish with a wild healthy Brushtail, and along with the possum grounded in the middle of the day, meant something wasn't right. Sadly, many Brushtail Possums fall victim to rat bait toxicity as was the case with the beautiful female who lost her life moments after this photo was taken. She displayed many of the clinical signs of rat bait toxicity such as a pale nose and lips, cold foot pads and was extremely weak and wobbly. Rat bait poisoning is highly treatable if the animal receives veterinary attention in time. For this mother Brushtail, sadly her condition was beyond treatment Rat baits contain anticoagulants which inhibit the clotting enzyme in the body causing a slow and painful death for all animals - wild, pet animals as well as pest rodents. What makes scenarios such as this even more painful to grapple with is that it is avoidable. Please don't place rat baits out for any creature. Native birds of prey have also fallen victim due to secondary poisoning from eating rats and mice that had ingested these harmful baits. There are more humane ways such as live traps to remove rodents from your property. Please do not use rat baits because the outcome is devastating
02.01.2022 Friday's special
02.01.2022 Nature is amazing. Our possums, particularly can be killed by bees invading their spaces. But when other species collaborate guess who wins?
01.01.2022 This is so rare. To be able to reunite mum and baby is the ultimate success.
