25.01.2022 ITCHY and TULLEY Two new beautiful joeys at Possumwood are Itchy and Tulley.Itchy was rescued by local resident Susan on a wet cold night last weekend. It appeared that his mum might be old or unwell and unable to carry him in the pouch or feed him .Mum is being monitored.Itchy had some lice hence his name.I rescued sweet ,little Tulley very late one night at Possumwood .He had been alone calling his mum for an hour before I decided that he needed a safe warm cosy bag and a bottle of warm formula for the night. We sat outside the next night hoping we might find his mum when he called but that was not to be .Tulley is extremely affectionate and settled immediately into the the little mob of joeys at Possumwood

23.01.2022 SAD AND REALLY SAD WITH A SMILE AS A REWARD The saddest rescues I find are when a mother is injured and has to come into care and leave a juvenile joey behind unless there is a darter available at the time.Young kangaroos stay with their mum for a long time and will still drink from the pouch until they are almost as big as their mum sometimes. One of our girls, Venus ,was stll feeding her first joey Doona when Doona had her own joey .Doona was recently killed by a car (on a ...rd where the speed limit is supposed to be 50) and Venus was very distressed and agitated and searched for our beautiful Doona for several days .The second of the saddest rescues for me is when I have to take an injured joey from its mother.Kangaroo mothers can be fierce in their protection of their joeys .The first little fence hanger was rescued by Denise and Peter from Wildcare. They travelled a long distance to rescue Jasper and bring him to Possumwood .He was very unwell when he arrived .Luckily vets Audrey ,Rainbow and vet nurse Brie from Sydney Mobile Vet were doing a clinic last weekend at Possumwood and tried to resuscitate Jasper .He was hypothermic and severely dehydrated .He appeared to improve and drank some glucose water for me but died quite suddenly a couple of hours later. His poor mother was trying to protect him as best she could .Ths second rescue yesterday was very challenging.Mum was desperate to save her little joey Shelley. She kept charging at the fence trying to frighten me and trying to put her head through the fence to touch her little joey .I had sedated the joey and was holding her by both feet and supporting her weight until she quietened down so she did not struggle and dislocate the hip.I was very lucky mum did not decide to jump the fence and teach me a lesson for daring to go near her little joey. She followed me back to the car and kept hopping back to where her joey had been trapped .The look on her face was heartbreaking.Little Shelley was severely dehydrated, exhausted and had an elevated respiratory rate .She thankfully improved after treatment and when I returned from doing jobs at Possumwood Cottage at sunrise she greeted me with her beautiful face . Moral of the story -Don't mess with a kangaroo mum's kids or you could very likely come off second best. See more

21.01.2022 FENCE HANGER MOLLY and MORGAN Molly was found on the side of the rd after being caught by one leg in a fence .Luckily a passer- by kindly alerted Morgan from Sydney Fox and Dingo Rescue and Possumwood went out to retrieve poor Molly who by this time was very hot.Unfortunately Molly had a dislocated hip and at present there is neither an available surgeon who can fix this problem adequately in an adult kangaroo nor the money to pay for her surgery.Little Morgan is tiny at 380g but currently is drinking his bottles well. Hip dislocation is a major problem in kangaroos caught by one leg in fences.

21.01.2022 RUS-HERE IS YOUR LITTLE MATE BAGSY Rus lives out in the bush and has made friends with a beautiful little red neck wallaby whom he called Bagsy .Bagsy visits Rus every day and enjoys a treat of rolled oats, carrot and even a few baked beans. At the weekend Rus noticed that Bagsy could not get up and was not able to use her right foreleg .He rang Wombat Bill from NARG and he managed to locate Rus in his bush paradise and took Bagsy to Majors Creek Wombat Refuge from where she... was tranferred to Possumwood by Jessie and Kayley who are helping us at present.Dr Audrey from Sydney Mobile Vet and Rhys from Rehab Klinik were doing a clinic at Possumwood so Bagsy had the best care possible and is now recovering at Possumwood and hopefully will soon be able to return to her mate Rus in their bush paradise which luckily was not burnt in last summer's fires.Red neck wallabies hop very fast and unfortunately often run into objects such as fences and can suffer a cervical spine injury. If the injury is not unstable they can regain good function as we have seen in other red necks similarly injured. The short video is Bagsy enjoying some banksia rose See more

18.01.2022 NEW FENCE HANGERS Two new beautiful girls unfortunately caught in fences.Deb was rescued by Deb and Paul from Wildcare and they did a great job of treating her overnight and then she was brought to Possumwood .Little Isabella was rescued by Marian from NARG.She had been cut out of the fence the night before and the property owners contacted NARG when they realised she could not get up.

15.01.2022 SAD DAYS Some days are very sad for wildlife carers. When an animal has suffered so much you want them to get better and enjoy life again - Bridgie and Lettie's stories Brigid -a local resident who has helped out at Possumwood rang last Saturday (a day of torrential rain ) and said that she had found a kangaroo confused and running into fences on the side of a local road..The kangaroo was very mobile so Brigid ,Steve Jenny -another local resident, Arthur -a volunteer from Fr...ance and I gathered to carry out the rescue.By the time we all arrived Brigid ,the kangaroo, was in a dam cooling off.As she emerged from the dam Brigid, our kind local resident (after whom the injured kangaroo was named), grabbed her by the tail like a veteran kangaroo rescuer and we were able to get her to the ground and sedate her .She had severe facial bruising and lacerations due to the constant running into fences , had cataracts the poor girl and was cofused and frightened. Back at Possumwood - several sutures and a warm dry bed and Bridgie was much more comfie. We spent a lot of time talking to her and stroking her neck and within two days she had settled very well. She was very kind to another new arrival -Lettie - named after another wonderful French volunteer who helped us at Possumwood and then helped out James Fitzgerald at the Two Thumbs Wildlife Trust sanctuaries. James had been called to assess a kangaroo with a pouch injury. She was also mobile and unfortunately we do not have wildlife darters available most of the time. James managed to catch this poor kangaroo this week .Her pouch injury was old and the wounds were full of maggots. She had been flicking dirt onto the wound to try to protect it from the blowflies which torment injured animals during the warmer months in Australia. The maggots were eating her flesh and she would have been in pain but she was still very mobile and difficult to catch. We spent a lot of time cleaning her wound and giving her fluids and antibiotics but very sadly Lettie the kangaroo died today -likely due to the severity of the8 wound infection. We can only gain comfort from the fact that the pain of the maggots was gone and she was warm ,safe and comfortable and she had beautiful Bridgie keeping her company.I often say to Steve that I cannot do this wildlife rescue anymore and his response is -WilI I tell the next person who rings about an animal in trouble that we are not available? He knows the answer is NO. See more

12.01.2022 NEW TRIAGE CLINIC -GETTING CLOSE TO BEING COMPLETED Thankyou to Humane Society International ,Animals Australia, Animal Disaster Response Germany and ARC the new Triage Clinic to service wildlife affected by natural disasters in the SE NSW is taking shape .Flooring and electrical work will be completed soon. The catastrophic bushfires of 2019 -2020 demonstrated that we cannot depend on government agencies to help wildlife. Thankyou to the above mentioned groups for looking to the future and to ways in which we can be prepared to help animals affected by such disasters.

11.01.2022 Time for an afternoon nap at Possumwood for some and Time to move on to freedom for others We have started to move animals again .The release of animals had to be postponed last spring /summer because of the catastrophic bushfires. Most of the animals with burns due to the bushfires have now been released and it is now time to release some of the rehabilitated animals and the orphans who have been raised at Possumwood.

09.01.2022 POSSUMWOOD ON A VERY WET NIGHT

07.01.2022 RAMORNIE , LIZZIE and MISSY Ramornie was rescued by Wombat Bill from Majors Creek Wombat Refuge and Marian from NARG.She had received a head hit from a car and as a consequence has severe concussion , vertigo and likely facial fractures .As a result of her confusion and vertigo she was rubbing the side of her face on the ground and consequently has caused damage to her eye hence the eye protection.Lizzie was originally a fence hanger and has lived at Possumwood for the last ...16 years .Despite a permanent foot deformity she has done very well ,enjoyed her life and is a very good mother. She is a very smart girl also .During bad winter weather when her joey is getting heavier and harder to carry she sleeps on our back verandah where there is good protection from the elements and pellets if she wants a snack. So pleasant to stroke and talk to such a beautiful creature every time you go out the door and be able to watch her joeys grow and thrive. They spend the day sleeping on the hill enjoying the sun. 03.01.2022 Staying sane as a wildlife rescuer and carer - balancing the negatives with the positives It can be very tough going being a wildlife rescuer and carer -so much sadness when you see the trauma experienced by our wildlife .It is just the same for those who rescue and advocate for domestic animals. All you can do is acknowledge that you have reduced an animals suffering by rescuing him /her even if they have to be euthanased. And it is the happy outcomes which keep us all going....The last 3 rescues have all had unhappy outcomes.1 The big beautiful male kangaroo whose ankle was destroyed by a barbed wire fence and had to be euthanased. 2 The little 7 kg female fence hanger rescued by Marian from NARG.She looked OK and comfie when I left her at 5 am but we were called to rescue the big boy at 8 am so I did not check on her until about 10 am and she died soon after.3 The poor boy who had his throat slashed. We were devastated when we arrived just too late to rescue him.The previous 4 rescues however have all had good outcomes and it is such a pleasure to see the animals doing well .The happy outcomes keep us going.
