24.01.2022 Coming soon... Bendigo’s Easter Fair: amusement, charity and tradition 6 March to 29 August 2020... An exhibition of photographs, moving image and memorabilia sharing the fun, benevolence, entertainment and tradition cemented over 150 Easter Fairs. The first Easter Fair was held in Bendigo in 1871; two days of fun and frolic in charity’s cause. Now a significant tourist attraction, the event is highly anticipated by locals and visitors to the city and in 2020 will run for the 150th time. Over time attractions and entertainments have come and gone yet, longstanding community connections have endured, forging iconic traditions through shared endeavour, festivity and cultural exchange. 22.01.2022 Pieces of a story: people and places of Bendigo 11 October 2019 - 23 February 2020 In literature, a vignette is a short scene that captures an important and defining detail about a character or element of a story. Vignettes are mostly descriptive; they are not complete plots or narratives. Vignettes are small parts of a larger work, and can only exist as pieces of a whole story. In a similar way, a collection of historical artworks and objects contains distinct pieces that ha...ve been acquired over time. A collection often develops according to both chance and opportunity, and may predominantly represent prevailing historical narratives. Our understanding of history, however, can also be enhanced by considering what, or who, may have been omitted. Who has been telling the story? Drawn from the collections of Bendigo Art Gallery, this exhibition presents vignettes of Bendigo’s history, as captured in portraits and objects linked with significant people, places and moments in our city’s past and present histories. https://www.bendigoregion.com.au//pieces-of-a-story-people
